I mean, i don’t feel like it would change too much. Then, the reprint would just have to be of the Japanese version, so that it works over there and then just reprint the English versions to not have the restriction. Though, I feel like this would’ve been best to do back in the GX era to stop things before they kept going too far 😔

The funniest example is probably during that brief point where Red-Eyes Alternative Black Dragon was Illegal due to it's effect specifying "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" instead of "Red-Eyes B. Dragon"

The funny thing is that it's name in Japanese does mean frog. カエル is the normal noun form of the word for frog, while ガエル is the adjective form to describe which kind of frog someone is referring to. Toad is ヒキガエル. The only reason why they changed the other form for the word is like the "Vampiric Koala" example, they just wanted to separate cards even though the words are talking about the same animal. If they made an actual toad archetype, it was be really awkward for the TCG, since we've already made lots of cards with the word "toad" in them that wouldn't exist in the OCG.

The main thing I think letting Frog the Jam be a Frog monster is opening up some Normal Monster support for the deck. Unexpected Dai to summon a free Frog from the deck turn 1 can get some fun plays going, and there's two or three different spells that Monster Reborn specifically Normal Monsters. They can be a great reusable material for extra deck summons if you have the space, and I wonder if Frogs having access to _a certain Rank 2 Extra Deck monster_ made looping Frog the Jam actually kind of a threat.

Frog the Who? Ah, you mean Slime Toad. Well, slime toad until "slime" becomes an archetype. Or Toad.

Nowadays with the new earthbound cards they used except "earthbound spirit " wish is funny considering that earthbound spirit is a normal monster with 2000 def

If anything, I feel like Earthbound Spirit is a bigger offender, since the Earthbound Immortals are supposed to have their own lore, which Spirit does not fit into. Really should’ve just reprinted Earthbound Spirit to have a different name.

@@GatorEXYGO should be an easy fix. make it "Earth Bound Spirit", with a space in the middle, like how Master Duel made "Necrolancer the Time Lord" no longer a "Timelord" card.

There's a similar case with this obscure guardian support card that went to the trouble to exclude a bunch of cards but didn't exclude all the guardian cards outside the guardian archetype. You can search out guardian sphinx with it.

You could, since its Japanese name contained Guardian (ガーディアン) Excluded cards in the English TCG were (iirc): --Celtic Guardian-- _Elf Swordsman_ --Winged Dragon, Guardian of the Fortress #1-- _Fortress-Protecting Winged Dragon_ --Winged Dragon... #2-- _Wyvern_ --Guardian of the Labyrinth-- _Watchman of the Underworld_ --The Reliable Guardian-- _Tanomoshiki Shugosha_ Notably, "Guardian" has not seen support since Arsenal Summoner.

The whole "Frog the Jam" thing is pretty illogical. If they had just not included the "except 'Frog the Jam'" text in the english translation of the frogs, it would have made no difference, there's no crazy combos this normal monster enables. But they added that text in the translations *specifically* to keep the cards the same between the English and Japanese translations... Meanwhile, they were perpetuating much larger differences such as the separate OCG and TCG banlists, release delays in the west, and TCG-exclusive archetypes. It's clear that these much larger differences don't matter to them, so why not just let Frog the Jam be a frog?

While TCG and OCG have different na lists I think letting Frog the Jam be a Frog in the TCG is still a bit much because it creates plays that would be Illegal in the OCG. It’s the little bit of consistency between the two that’s allowed to exist 🤷‍♂️

This reminds me of how originally in the TCG nothing on the cards or in the rulebooks told you that ritual monsters couldn't be special summoned from the graveyard unless successfully ritual summoned first. You had to know japanese or get irate when someone called a judge over about it and you were told that yes, that is the rule, despite the only way to know that beforehand being to read either obscure early-internet sites or to know Japanese.

They do that for some cards. Like Raider's Knight. And also iconic cards like Summoned Skull has an archetype condition text without needing to rename the card.

Toon Alligator can be found by Toon Table of Content. Also "Elemental HERO Necroid Shaman", "Dark Jeroid", "Magical Android" and "Salamangreat Zebroid X" get unintentional support by "roid" archetype.

Frog the Jam was always just the funniest name to me back in the Dark Duel Stories days. It’s a bummer such an screwball name had to be nixed.

May they continue to create more archetypes for old cards like... Battle Ox or Judge Man

When i think of Judge man, i remember back in 2009 or so, at a tourney, some younger kid had Judge man in their deck, a lot of the more seasoned yugioh players pointed it out and praised him about how strong the card was and that it was awesome (In a wholesome way, not mockingly).

Millennium shield was in fact good.

Slime Toad _is_ the original translation of the Japanese name. This problem is also why Summoned Skull now has the (this card is an Archfiend card) text.

It should be noted that shortly after the name change it started to actually get used in frog decks with rescue rabbit

They missed out on making a creature called earl and calling the combo toad jam and earl.

my favorite is the errata to change "Hundred-eyes dragon" to "hundred eyes dragon" so that it wouldnt be considered a "red-eyes" card

I love when one of the 7k cards in Yu-Gi-Oh that effectively don't exist cause a nightmare for the design team. It's like when gimmick puppets randomly got a single relevant card into a meta deck because of how bad that card is

Never knew there was a Frog deck and now its my reason to pick up this game.

Frog the jam was actually devastating because it was a normal monster, not only was it easy to pull out with frogs in theory. Then it would turn around and synergize with cards that require a normal monster, cards that on the surface are you know kind of a mute point, to fasting bargain and other things coming to mind. However other cards that required normal monsters in the Decker other things could also pull out frog the jam frog the jam was kind of easy to pull out. The main advantage of course was the cards that required you diffusion Simon normal monsters cards that necessarily didn't specifically help frogs but in reality they help the archetype greatly. This would also continue into synchros and XYZ where there are certain normal monsters or anything. Remember that there were other cards that were normal monsters easy to pull out that really did just become a high demand card Gene warped war wolf is a great example of this It's a level 4 monster with 2000 attack that was slightly easy to pull out and had just enough tack to be threatening however the main thing was that it was easy to pull out and it was the right attribute as well as being a normal monster. frog the jam being a water type is even easier to pull out, being a normal type is super easy to pull out, and being level two is easier to pull out than a level 4 because there's more support for low-level cards not only that but then there's also support for low level normal cards then you factor in the frog name. So Konami actually had to make sure that frog the jam wasn't used, because the towed frog archetype becomes a lot more consistent with frog the jam . If you don't believe me, That's fine, however you could just go on to dualist Network and give it a shot. You might be surprised if you do your research on looking into things that require normal cards things that require water types and everything and things that require low levels that there is a great overlap of cards that can use frogs a jam that would have synergized with all the frog cards had it not been for konami's intervention.

The funny thing is, it’s a reference to an old Game Boy game - it’s been translated as “For the Frog the Bell Tolls”. I wish it had synergy with the Vic Viper, because it would be fun to see Konami reference their games, from before they were just a pachinko & card company. Then again, I would love to just straight up have Solid Snake in the game.

In a similar vein, Elf Swordsman got a mandatory exclusion notice from the "Guardian" archetype because some genius decided its English name should be "Celtic Guardian".

A distinction that didn't even need to be made.

They missed the opportunity to name it 'Toad Jam' as a pun.

i rember, in some gba game toad master special summoned frog the jam /slime toad to the field, so there is actually potential for this to be a fun archetype

Frog the jam would've been the only frog normal monster which would technically be a niche, that could technically make it so that normal support cards could be used with frogs, which might do something, maybe. Frogs are weird because they are old enough to become broken by accident just through weird synergies so i kinda get why they wouldn't want to have to think about frog the jam every time they made frog or normal monster support even though frog the jam being the card to break a deck would rule

No not even technically. For whatever format you're playing you are expected to use whatever the text was historically at that time, there has never been a time when the card was called "frog the jam" at the same time as the other cards that historically had the exclusion text didn't have it.

French translation fact: In french its like "except Frog the jam and include treeborn frog", because frog in french is "grenouille", and the treeborn frog name is "rainette". So after a long time it was renamed "grenouille d'arbre" We have the same problem with traptrix cards and the cards with "trap" in their name

A lot of people forget this when bringing up frog the jam, but normal monsters are kind of broken when used as engine fuel. Unexpected Dai, painful decision… they’re really strong ways to get normal monsters out.

They really missed the mark by not calling it toad jam
