Why foreign entertainers in Korea set up their OWN agency

The representation of foreign-born personalities in Korean media has been a mixed bag for the last three decades.
As the country began seeing the number of foreign residents grow in leaps and bounds since the late 1980s ― with the number eventually surpassing 2.14 million as of last January, according to Korea Immigration Service ― broadcasters took note of the change and attempted to reflect it in their programming in varying formats.
Up until the mid-2000s, the role of non-Koreans onscreen was mostly limited to a novelty personality whose given task was to embody the Western fascination with different aspects of Korean culture ― which had yet to see its popularity explode to today's international level.
“They would be treated more as a means to satisfy the local viewers' nationalistic need for validation,” said Ilya Belyakov, a naturalized Korean citizen from Russia, a TV personality and a translator. Or they became the butt of “harmless” jokes for their thick, often exaggerated accents when speaking Korean.

Good luck. My image was just used in a current very popular K Drama without my knowledge, consultation, agreement or compensation. Fortunately friends saw my image and that's how I discovered this typical exploitation of foreign artists in Korea. I am currently negotiating a fair solution and hoping this gets resolved soon. This, together with many other reasons, is why foreigners need proper support when working in Korea.

AWESOME GUYS!!! So much yes to this!!! More independence for foreigners instead of being constantly controlled by companies. It's the same in the ESL industry these days we fighting for hagwons to be hols accountable for mistreatment of foreigners! Great work guys would love to work with you guys!

외국인 불러서 국뽕하는 거 좀 그만 했으면 좋겠는데 이제는 기획서를 만든다? 어느나라가 이러냐 유럽이 아시아인 불러서 방송 내보내고 그래? 일본중국인이 외국인 특히 서양만 불러서 방송 출연시키고 이래? 한국이 점점 창피해진다

Good thing that foreigners are taking initiative for migrants, especially when they get harrassed & stalked by locals for simply existing. Unless the localites learn proper social ettiquettes, & the justice system of your country is rectified, such initiatives are needed.
