Dr Dr: I am 59 and suffer from female pattern hair loss and was diagnosed with alopecia in January 2022. The dermatologist prescribed Finasteride and Rogaine and I have been on both since the end of January. In March I also purchased iRestore, a laser helmet and I have been using that every two days for 25 minutes at a time. I do notice a lot of short hair growth on my crown. I’ve been very concerned about the side effects of taking Finasteride and whether the benefit outweighs the risks. I tried to stop taking it once or twice (I’m taking 2.5mg daily) but had a splitting headache when I stopped. Do you think that’s due to stopping Finasteride? How can I safely stop taking it? Perhaps reduce the dose to half what I’m taking for a while and then stop instead of stopping cold Turkey? Thank you so much for the video. If my efforts do not improve I will most definitely consult you for Tricho Stem.

Hi Choo Choo Rosenbloom, I generally don't advise women to take finasteride, as detailed in the video, so I can't recommend you continue taking it. Finasteride, whether it's 5mg or enlarged prostates, or 1mg for pattern hair loss, are both drugs meant for males. You are also taking a higher dosage than what's prescribed for men with pattern hair loss. Your headache cannot be definitively linked to finasteride. I suggest you talk to your prescribing doctor about their reasons for prescribing you a male drug. Also, given your age, your hair loss can be associated with menopause. Good doctor, can we predict hair loss to some degree? You are very experienced. Based on your experience how do you look at my future? Started going thinning at 14-15 probably. Norwood 2-3 ish at age around 20. Started fin when I was 21. Now 23 and have regrown nothing but yes hair strands look darker and stronger now. What do you think my future looks like ,good doc? Am I 100% gonna go N6-7? My hair looks perfectly fine in crown and back and everyother place except my frontal part

Hi Lance Irvin, The risk of side effects from finasteride is only about 2% of users, so they’re very rare, and the vast majority of men taking the drug do not have side effects. Hi apoorv singh chouhan, All men have a significant level of DHT in their system, so a blood test isn't a reliable indicator. Male pattern hair loss is caused by DHT-sensitivity, and not all men have a DHT-sensitive scalp. Level of DHT-sensitivity also varies among men, which is seen in the level of aggressiveness of hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi parvinshah, 5mg daily is even excessive for male pattern hair loss, as the standard dosage is 1mg daily for men. 5mg is the dosage for enlarged prostates. Even when DHT levels are raised in women, it still not a significant amount to justify finasteride use, in my opinion. The video does show how we can thicken thinning hair in women without the use of finasteride, spironolactone, or minoxidil. I hope this clarifies things for you.

You can take finasteride for hair loss. Get your blood work done, if DHT is high, finasteride can be prescribed. I have high DHT levels and this causes hairloss, acne, and other symptoms. You have no idea how lucky you are that your doctor prescribed finasteride. DHT does not serve a purpose in women, there is no reason to 'fear' prescribing it. If anything, it just wouldn't be effective. DHT does serve a purpose in men, it should not be prescribed in men if they are worried about side affects for women.

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

    @AmiyaPrasadMD

    27 күн бұрын

Hi@@hannahmulligan1103, As explained in the video, finasteride is dangerous for pregnant women because it can affect fetal development of a male child. DHT-levels are generally low even in women who have higher than normal DHT. Heightened testosterone can causes issues like acne, but there are also testosterone blockers like oral contraceptives, and spironolactone. Heightened DHT in women is not a conclusive factor in pattern hair loss in women, and it is DHT-sensitivity that is major factor of hair loss in men, not the level of DHT in the system. Female pattern hair loss can be treated without risks of finasteride. As stated in the video, the risks of finasteride taken by women outweigh the benefits, so I wouldn't call women who are prescribed finasteride "lucky", but if your doctor prescribed it to you, that's between you and your doctor to accept the risks. I hope this clarifies things for you,

Hi @shivangiverma7161, No, finasteride is a DHT-blocker for progressive hair thinning in men due to genetic pattern hair loss. What you have is not DHT-related, but rather brittle hair, and split ends, which is a hair quality condition. While there are shampoos to help with brittle hair, and split ends, you can may also benefit from more vitamin D and other nutrients to help improve hair health. You can consult with a dermatologist for a proper examination, and recommendations for treatment. I hope this helps you.

Hi@@ITZME11592, Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Finasteride is primarily for slowing hair thinning by blocking DHT, with a limited effect, if any, on thickening thinning hair. You can refer to these videos on how we thickened thinning hair and increased scalp coverage in men already on finasteride for years with our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration injection treatment, the limitations of minoxidil, and why our patients don't need to use minoxidil after our treatment: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zo2j2bKHgtbcZqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/papslLqMoLTMnqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmmdssZ8lr2Yfso.html

Hi Hosai Said, Sorry to hear that, but I would have to diagnose the cause of your hair loss properly first. Pattern hair loss is progressive hair thinning, not hair shedding. Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. While minoxidil is not a prescription medication, a doctor should determine the cause of your hair loss before you use any medication for it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@hosaisaid7831, No, I said I need to diagnose the cause of your hair loss before I would recommend a medication or treatment. If you are shedding hair due to the stress on the body due to dieting, shed hair grows back without medical intervention, and use of minoxidil without a proper diagnosis can cause additional hair shedding. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi doctor, I'm a 20 year old female suffering from abnormal hair loss for about 1.5 years (no covid). I dyed my hair often before but never had hair loss so I suspect it may be due to stopping birth control (pill then patch) after ~1.5 years. Upon stopping the patch, I suffered from acne for about 8 months before returning to acne-free skin. Another factor may be stress from college. Could stopping birth control be causing my hair loss even though it has already been over a year? P.s. I've watched so many of your videos , thank you for educating the world

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi Jess L, Thank you for your compliments, thanks for watching! Hormonal changes from using different contraceptives can cause temporary hair loss, and severe stress can cause temporary hair shedding called telogen effluvium. Your hormone levels do need to be checked to see if the hair loss is due to it, but if it is, it should stabilize with hormone levels, so I suggest seeing your gynecologist about it. If it's not, a dermatologist, or a doctor like myself experienced with diagnosing and treating pattern hair loss can diagnose other possible causes. I hope this helps you.

Hi Raj kamal Maurya, It is normal to shed 50-100 hairs a day, and they do grow back. The white bulb you are seeing is dead skin, or keratin, and not the hair follicle. Pattern hair loss is when shed hair grows back progressively thinner, and there is a delay in regrowth. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Deep Shikha, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. You don't need repeat injections periodically. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely. Some TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration patients with advanced hair loss get a second treatment 15-24 months after the first which we call the booster, but this is already included in the cost of the treatment plan, so you don’t pay extra for it. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil completely, or be weaned off it to prevent a sudden hair shed. You can refer to these videos about the differences between TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration from PRP alone: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qI51qcN6o9bLp7w.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoeBtsZyobndftI.html

Hi @jubaidaakter3571, Finasteride is a DHT-blocker, and DHT is important for the development of a male fetus, which is why finasteride is not prescribed for women wanting to get pregnant. You need to coordinate with your prescribing doctor about finasteride cessation, and when it's a safe time for you to conceive. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@jubaidaakter3571, Finasteride is not a contraceptive, but it can harm male fetal development, so you need to coordinate with your doctor about stopping use, and a safe time to conceive. I don't prescribe finasteride to my female patients. I hope this clarifies things further for you.

Hi @joyceffc62, Our cost for any procedure is not discussed in our videos, or listed on our websites because the cost of the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment varies with the extent of treatment needed. Cost of the treatment plan also includes the second booster treatment, if needed in advanced hair loss cases, as well regular follow ups to monitor your progress, either in our offices or through Skype, FaceTime or email. At its full cost, TrichoStem Hair Regeneration is priced at about half of a single FUT hair transplant, or about a third of an FUE transplant performed in the US. You can contact our offices or our websites for a price range. Our offices are located in the US in Manhattan, New York City which you can call at (212) 265-8877; Garden City, Long Island at (516) 742-4636; or Vienna, Virginia at (703) 356-1336. You can also reach us through www.prasadcosmeticsurgery.com, www.nyhairloss.com, or www.trichostem.com by filling out a contact form, and we will get back to you. I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi 졔리Jelly, It's not clear if you are male or female since you are commenting on a video about finasteride not being recommended for women. The fact is that a very small percentage of men report side effects from finasteride, and the vast majority have no side effects. As long as you are male, and have a doctor's prescription for finasteride, there is no problem with you continuing it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

It’s misleading to say women have a relatively low level of testosterone imo. Women have relatively low testosterone in comparison to men. However, women have a much higher amount of testosterone in their bodies than estrogen. So if we’re not comparing women to men, then women do have a relatively high level of testosterone in comparison to estrogen. It is the most abundant sex hormone in women’s bodies, and the precursor for estrogen is testosterone. Most people don’t realize this because testosterone is measured in nanograms per deciliter. Estrogen is measured in picograms per milliliter. If you do the conversion, you can see that the total volume of testosterone in women’s bodies is much higher than estrogen. If we can’t say that the level of estrogen in women’s bodies is relatively small, then we can’t say the level of testosterone is relatively small. We must say it is relatively large. Unless we are making, the grave error of comparing women to men. So this reasoning for not treating women appears to be based on a fallacy.

Hi @pach1119, You misheard what I said in the video, as finasteride is a DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE-blocker (DHT), not a testosterone blocker. Women are prescribed the testosterone-blocker spironolactone routinely for acne treatment, and the contraceptive pill is a testosterone-blocker. I hope this clarifies things for you.
