I think most people would look at testing to see how teams go in terms of reliability (no. of laps) and the general design philosophy the team has made for the season. Wouldn't really say that testing times are indicative of the true running order, as we need to see under race/qualy sims to get a better picture of that.

For me I like to take an indication of how each car handles more so than lap times. You can't fake dynamics I think.

This. It's a combination. Red Bull had the ideal test. It's fast, it's smooth, nearly flawless. Ferrari had an awful test, where everything was fine and the design is just slow, that can be terrifying because how do you bridge the gap when nothing is wrong. Mercedes had a productive test. You'd rather not have problems, but if you do, find them in testing. The fact they finished day 3 so well speaks volumes.

I remember the W11 ran 3rd in preseason then went on to become the fastest car ever. Once again, the W12 ran 7th in preseason and was a rocket during the 2021 season. Mercedes are known for doing this and based off Toto being so calm in press interviews, there’s more in that W14. Horner and RB are watching them, and watching very closely.

The W11 was 3rd on *hard* tyres when everyone else went on mediums or softs. Everyone knew that it was the fastest car from day 1 of testing. Don't try to rewrite history. And the W12 was never a rocket haha. Bullshit. It actually had a lower top speed than the Red Bull in the early part of the season and suffered from handling issues. Lewis won three of the first four races mainly down to Mercedes' unconventional strategy and Lewis managing his tyres well. Only when Mercedes rolled out an extensive upgrade package at Silverstone did the handling vices go away and the car look fast in the corners in the hands of Lewis. Mercedes won the Constructors' for 2021 partly because Perez was worse than Bottas. Remember, they won it by 58 points. Skin of their teeth. Enough with the "sandbagging" nonsense. Mercedes will start behind this year.

When 90% of people say “don’t read into the times”, they mean exactly what was mentioned at the end of the video. It’s not the sole representation of what each car’s pace is and what the running order will be like. That also does not mean they are irrelevant information. A combination of lap time, how the car behaves going round the circuit, mileage and so many other factors that combine to give an overall picture of how good, or not good, teams are going into the season opener.

No. It was more because they actually got more up until this year. I'm old enough to remember when teams could hold their own private test sessions for as long as they wanted to. Made fixing a problematic car a lot easier. I think this system is flawed, but so is unlimited testing. 2 formal test sessions pre season work, but the teams should be able to turn their shakedown into a complete race distance test session. Essentially, there should be that one chance to fix any reliability issues with the car before pre season testing.

Nah, they don't matter. I've seen all kinds of weird anomalies crop up during pre-season testing to give us a completely distorted view of the pecking order. Nobody is seriously trying to break lap records, it's more about testing the reliability of the new car and I suppose the drivers giving their first proper feedback regarding what needs to be improved. After all, there are no prizes or points to be won.
