Why Fashion Matters: The Power of Getting Dressed | Christian Birky | TEDxDetroit

The way we dress has a profound impact on how we think about ourselves and how others perceive us, yet there remains a disconnect between what we stand for and how our clothes are made. The scale and emotional power of the fashion industry uniquely position it to create a more equitable society.
Christian Birky started a pony-powered, zero-emissions lawn service at age 10. Now 25, he continues to explore how the choices we make can create a better world. He studied prison policy at Princeton before founding Lazlo, which hires former inmates to manufacture sustainable menswear in Detroit.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The issue is since inflation in the US is sky high and wages not increasing anywhere near the cost of living, Americans cannot afford to spend a lot on clothes, especially the cost of high quality clothes. Most sustainable clothing that is ethically produced and environmentally friendly is much more expensive. Yes, we can buy fewer quantity and better quality but clothing manufacturers in the US need to figure out how to lower costs in order to make quality, ethically made clothing made in the US more affordable for average American.

so if I don't care how I dress then I must be someone who is careless about life in general and is a leech and someone who is dressed in a tuxedo is a superhero with the personality of Jesus Christ? Yeah sound accurate enough to judge someone based on how he dresses

@@GlyGlue It says much but it doesn't show us everything about the person's personality. Of course we can not judge a person only based on their dresses but for exemple if the person dress dark clothes frequently it is often associated to a more hidden and secret lifestyle. Nobody with such personality will wear extravagant clothes because they don't want to be very seen and noted.

@@antinoofromgreece6560I can understand that fashion has lots of creative value as an art form, more than other fields. But the idea of something interfering with my life while I am not involved in it, triggers me. When I think that there are people that judge me based on how I dress, negatively or positively, than I'll take that as an insult since those kind of people are only satisfied with seeing the surface. I hate these people especially because this is not how I view people. They sound intolerant and superficial.

@@GlyGlue I understand we’re your coming from. I think what she is trying to say is that we can express ourselves through clothing. Many people think I am pressuring people and others to follow trends and look amazing all the time but I really just do it because I become more productive when I do and find confidence in myself. People may judge me for what I wear but it’s my life and how I want to present myself. So not putting effort in your clothes doesn’t mean you don’t care about your life it’s just like a extra use of self expression like makeup, personal taste, art, jewelry, portfolio, mannerisms, etc.

Ok, but, perhaps the building in Bangladesh collapsed due to poor construction. I believe core to the problem of cheap fashion that is manufactured the way it is, is that trends are changing every week. People who sew these things are not trendy. They wear their own comfortable clothes and they are not buying something new all the time.

@@scienceislove2014 don't beat yourself because of it. Change should happen gradually and if it makes sense to you. Think for yourself, take a step back and evaluate your priorities. Do the things you believe in and stand for them. If somebody doesn't respect you because of it, at least you have yourself. I know it sounds lonely. but that's just at the beginning. In time you will attract more quality people into your life.

You can bathe, comb your hair and brush your teeth, however, if one person shows up wearing a t-shirt, dockers, and zori, and the other is in a bespoke suit with polished wing-tips who is more likely to be given the better reception?
