Hard ask in the end there. I am a seamstress. Getting my customers to pay me a living wage is a constant struggle. I believe that the fast fashion world has devalued my skill. I believe that the dumping of secondhand cheap clothing in Africa is crippling local textile artists, tailors and seamstresses.

Very inspiring speech! Not a long time ago I've started thinking of the awful consequences provided by the fast fashion industry. I'm sure that nowadays fashion has to be conscious, long-term and eco-friendly. We as consumers should do our best to protect the environment and people from the influence of the fast fashion industry which includes air and water pollution, global warming, poverty and almost unpaid labor. Let’s consume smarter!

I have the Nisolo Dari Boot and I somehow managed to buy them second hand and they looked brand new they are honestly soooo gorgeous!! Worth every penny I got a protective sole added on them so they can last for as long as possible! Truly timeless and amazing quality

But they are still the most sustainable option. Because others involve plastic. And don't be deceived by mycelium and pineapple leather they are 15 to 50% plastic and plastic is toxic to environment

Very insightful talk. Also nice that a solution is suggested with the problem. I personally would start a moratorium on purchasing any new clothing for a few years. The money saved would help me buy the fine quality clothing from fair trade certified brands later. Still I am wondering what happens to the workers and the produce who are already in the unfair trade. Do we need to ban their products immediately? Would their bosses who would be in loss pay them for the work already done?

I wish that one day everyone referenced all studies they mention in books, articles, blogs, videos and everything that's published. "There was a study..." When? Where? Carried out by whom? On whom? Were there 8 or 8 000 people involved? Can I check the methodology? Why do people believe everybody when they say that there was a study that proved it? I'm not saying that guy is lying but I'm saying that people should reference such things.

You're right and first hand observation works as well. I've observed that there are so many problems in this world and I strive not to contribute to them. If each individual cared enough to change, the world wouldn't be as it currently is. Then again that's being too optimistic... We can only wait and see. :)

Fashion industry now days is running in such a bad circle system....to the environment and to our future. Im just feeling so sad...

As a woman I only want quality, durability and stylish design in clothing. If the garment is made really well, repairable and feminine (not f*in sportswear and leggings...) I will spend my money accordingly. If it costs 200-300$ I will save up for it, if it is really worth it. Many many brands which used to make quality are getting worse and worse. Nowadays I mostly buy used and vintage clothing or getting tailor made garments here and there, because I am so fed up with expensive branding bullsh*t. So lets support creative designers who care about quality AND produce stylish and well cut clothing!

There is a enourmes psychological momentum while buying cheap and low quality goods. You have already lost your love to goods and people and. How do you think is the Effekt on human relations become when you know the next relation gets Even better and better. You live a life with a lot of one night stands. So in my opinion a wasted life.... be the change. Thx

If he's talking about ethical fashion, why is he still making the shoes in his factory from leather? Leather and tanneries in Bangladesh and China are massive polluters of their waterways, also causing death to people from toxic fumes, not to mention the slaughtering of animals .... there is mushroom leather, pineapple leather etc good talk nonetheless

It's great that you're raising an even more critical eye to this, which is exactly the point--being a consumer who asks questions. I believe most of Nisolo's leather are byproducts of the meat industry (uncertain where, but I would imagine from Peru, and I also think they look at all of their suppliers critically), and they try to use less intensive methods of tanning. Mushroom and pineapple leather sound intriguing and may very well be more widely adopted if they prove durable, etc. (I'll have to learn more about them). Sadly, I think most of the vegan leather on the market are not those more sustainable sounding sources you referenced, but manmade ones that are awful for the planet. I will add that leather compared to vegan manmade alternatives (meant to look like leather) is usually more environmental because they last longer and does not adversely harm the planet when it is tossed (which should be the last last last resort), and if there is a meat industry, it is even better when the whole animal is used, and nothing is wasted. Manmade materials that claim to be vegan, etc. are usually made from oil. The only way they can compare is if they last longer (which they could, but most pleather, for instance... which is what people look for when they want the look of leather but do not want to harm animals... breaks down and then when it no longer looks good, ends up in landfill), and if from postconsumer recycled materials or those natural alternatives you cited.

Forget green washing of offering a niche products.

Great talk but then I go check out his website and the use leather, I'm sad. What about the animals?? Even if the leather is bi-product, this company is still contribution to something which isn't ethical.

@Mandie Stone the whole press is just awful. I recently came across an article sharing how they break off the bottom of the cows legs then skin it alive, my heart sank. I havent came across anything like this since becoming vegan. I studied fashion and im working on my ideas to revamp/upcycle clothing but i also will be looking to natural dyes and creating hemp and cotton clothing too.

@Mandie Stone iv watch the documentaries you recommend, very sad. Its awful the conditions our fashion choices cause to other beings and the environment. Fast fashion has alot to answer for! Iv been make curtains most of it hand made and taking alot of time, its criminal whats happening in those factories. Im going to look into starting a blog and and etsy store? I was think calling my blog The Mindful Sewer? I was thinking Louisa Jane, The Mindful Sewer but thought this was to long? Iv always been aiming to do my own thing, design patterns and sell them too but iv been wondering what can i be doing in the vegan movement to make a bit of a difference, so this is what im going to try 🤔
