Why Everyone Should Play OMORI

Ойындар

In today's video essay, we are exploring the Indie PC cult hit, Omori, a game with heavy emotional themes, and a likeness tied to the Mother series. And I believe it is a game that everyone should play in their lives.

Thanks to everyone for checking out my new video today! OMORI is an excellent indie game filled with emotion, a literal battle of grief and guilt. Have you played it? Did you like it/hate it? Let me know your thoughts below!

I’ve had my eye on it for a while now, but have been waiting for it to drop on Switch. Heard someone say IGN Japan reported it will on the 25th? Let’s hope! Super dig the art style, earthbound-influence, and darker themes. For now though, I’m happy to be playing Eastward!

Basils reaction isn’t that weird, there’s been a bunch of cases where kids kill other kids by accident and they don’t think in getting help, they get nervous and try to cover it, to hide it, there’s even been cases where parents saw what happened and they also react by making it look like an accident or hiding the body. Basil response it’s a common one for a kid he’s age, bc he thinks about it like “My friend did something really bad, he can get in a really big trouble, and even I can get in trouble, but I don’t want him to be hurt, he’s a good friend, so I have to help him”. It’s like when you have siblings and one of them gets really hurt playing, but everyone agrees on not saying anything bc none of them want to be in trouble with their parents

One time as a kid, my younger sister & I started arguing (like usual) then I hit her on her temple out of anger but I was still holding my pencil when I did that so it gave her a small wound. When I noticed it & her pain, I looked at the clock and saw that mom will be coming home really soon from work. That made me panic a bit because I didn't want to get in trouble for hurting her, so I quickly took a bandage from our First Aid Kit and put it on her wound. Children would always try to cover up whatever trouble they did to avoid getting yelled at or just to avoid people getting disappointed or upset in any way. Adults still do that, too.

I guess this has spoilers if you're reading it before playing/watching the video. I think what contributed to Basil thinking up of the suicide was the fact that he had serious adandonment and loneliness issues due to his parents almost never being around him. I wouldn't be surprised if he already had plenty of depressive and negative thoughts, and his only friends were the only things keeping him going, Sunny being his best friend. So that lead to him rashly thinking up of any way to try and stop everything from falling apart. I'll admit it still has some weird elements to it, but I don't mind it. Then again, this is just what *I* think

  • @Dhalin

A few things about the video.. (HEAVY SPOILERS): "Did the friends forgive Sunny?" ... my answer to that: If they hadn't, would Sunny have been able to smile warmly at Basil in the 'secret' cutscene? If they hadn't forgiven Sunny, he surely would have been wrecked by it. "Why did Basil stage it?" ... Basil considered Sunny his absolute best friend, and would do absolutely anything and everything for Sunny. Sunny just accidentally killed his sister. Basil was afraid that Sunny would be in huge trouble, like, go to jail trouble and Basil's first instinct was to cover the whole thing up by making it look like she did it to herself. Basil only wanted to protect Sunny, and that's what he did for four years. In fact, most of Basil's mental anguish comes from the fact Sunny shut himself in and seemingly avoided Basil for years. "Were Sunny and Basil really that close? Why did everybody forget about Basil in Headspace?" ... Omori is in control of Headspace. Omori's job is to protect Sunny from the Truth at all costs. Basil keeps uncovering the truth, and every time he does, Omori is forced to banish him to Black Space to keep the truth hidden until the truth seeps out so much he's forced to reset Headspace again. And again. And Again. And Again. But... the cycle that we players play through, Headspace is irrevocably damaged by the mother deciding to move. In a room in blackspace, you find a ringing telephone, and a bunch of beds. "Stranger" (the Basil shadow) says that "something made the truth slip, and the hole that it made won't stop growing". What was that something? Checking the phone tells you that: "Sunny... we're moving away." ... those words, said by Mom to Sunny, shattered Sunny's stable loop and caused Headspace to start deteriorating to the point that not even Omori could keep it together. It's quite likely that Omori decided to punish Basil in Headspace because he keeps uncovering the truth.

I think all we can responsibly read into that smile is that, whatever the outcome of Sunny's confession, it has to be better than how he and Basil were living before. Even if the direct aftermath was an absolute clusterfuck, that's just part of the deal, and showing that isn't the game's concern. The story ends specifically when Sunny forgives _himself,_ and decides that confessing is the best option no matter how the others react.

  • @Shythalia

I don't think it matters though whether their friends forgive them or not. That's up to our interpretation, hence why they don't show it. Sunny & Basil were definitely besties, but after what happened, it wouldn't be too farfetched to also think that maybe Sunny hated Basil's idea of staging the death. But that's just my speculation.

Only other two games made me tear up like this. Pokémon mystery dungeon explorers of sky and Mother 3. *Spoilers The "good ending" was left ambiguous on purpose. Forgiveness is not something that can be given easily, not for situations like this, maybe it cannot be given at all no matter how much time passes. It's more like, "this is a good as it can be", our past sins cannot be erased and cannot be kept forever and will weigh down on us for as long as we refuse to let them go. Personally I don't think Sunny and Basil can be forgiven entirely, but I do think time will heal the wounds enough to acknowledge that what happened really happened and move on.

Spoilers below: It's strange for me to say this, since I've spent an absurd amount of time agonizing over minute details of Undertale's plot, but I find speculative theories about OMORI really detract from my enjoyment of the game. Some stories have ambiguities so the audience can piece together the full picture like a jigsaw puzzle, but it seemed pretty clear to me that the ambiguities in OMORI- like how Basil was capable of staging a suicide, or what the ultimate outcome of Sunny's confession is- exist ether because the answer is irrelevant to the story, or because ambiguity is the point. In response to you asking whether Basil's actions were "realistic", I would simply reply "no." It's unlikely that such a thing would happen. And yet, completely regardless, it still _could,_ and OMORI is a story about what the consequences would be if it did. Asking whether Mari was somehow alive when they hanged her is doubly irrelevant. Imagine if we somehow did know the answer. Would it change literally anything aside from substituting [guilt*1000] with [guilt*2000]? Would [guilt*2000] make the game _more emotional?_ I don't know man, I don't get the appeal. I only write this, btw, because you dropped that unexpected block of speculation into what seemed to be a thematically-focused "why you should play" style video. It really stuck out to me, but otherwise the video was well done.

Basil's reaction didn't stem from wanting to help. He was there when Sunny pushed Mari down the stairs. He saw it all, and his thoughts at that moment was probably that Sunny is gonna take the blame for this. Sunny is Basil's best friend and more than that, from what we know of his family life, Sunny was probably the only person who was constantly there for him since it was stated that the two of them hung out together much more often. In fact there is text somewhere in the game where And if the truth came out, he was afraid of what would happen to Sunny, of what their friends would think, of whether or not he could still be with Sunny, of whether Sunny would still be there for him and be his friend if he told the truth. His action to protect Sunny was ultimately a selfish action which is why he's just as wracked with guilt as Sunny whose action came from thoughtless anger. This is what makes the true ending's secret cutscene important, because we already defeated our something before even entering Basil's room. That last cutscene was from Basil's perspective and what we are seeing was his own "something" and it was Sunny's first genuine smile that defeated it. That here in front of him is a person who he has hurt physically, emotionally and mentally even if it was unintentional, giving him a genuine smile, the smile of the best friend he longed for all this time finally allowed him some peace of mind. Edit: I'm adding this quote from Basil just to get the point across even more. BASIL: And these... These are white tulips. Tulips aren't very flashy plants. They're not too big or small, not too elaborate or flamboyant. If I could put it in another way... I guess I would say that... They're comfortable, simple, modest, and perfect. Just like SUNNY. Basil thought of Sunny as "perfect", and Sunny in his headspace actually removes this word in his recollections.

  • @aortaplatinum
    @aortaplatinum2 жыл бұрын

I did not care for Omori. Like it's good, but I've experienced better horror games and WAY better MOTHER-likes and turn-based RPGs. The pacing in Headspace was awful, I found myself rushing through The Last Resort and Humphrey just so I could get back to the real world where stuff actually matters. As soon as I learned there WAS a real world and you weren't just interpreting the story through Sunny's dreams, I stopped caring about Headspace since nothing there matters at all and it's very boring until you're about to enter another horror segment and Headspace starts falling apart around you. Black Space was probably the best part of the game, tied with the final boss. But overall, it feels like there was a tight story and set of events but the team thought it wasn't enough, so they packed it with filler because so many dumbasses like to criticize games for being short, regardless of how fun they are or the replay value. Now Omori has very little. It's too long, it's not actually fun to play, and the replay value hardly exists because you can see both the good and bad endings just by continuing from the last save point in the game, and the "alternate route" changes nothing until the last 5 or so hours of the game, so unless you have a save right from before you're given the choice to open the door on the first day, you have to replay roughly 15 HOURS of the game to see that alternate route. As for your recommendation against people with depression playing Omori, I disagree, and think it's a subjective thing. I have clinical depression, and I got through it no issue [except generally disliking it]. Though I will say this is one of very few horror games to make me feel sick with that reveal of the truth even though I already had it spoiled for me. But there are WAY worse works for if you have depression or suicidal thoughts, I won't name any though as to avoid tempting someone's curiosity and causing them to feel like shit after looking one up.

  • @dingdinggaming9254

1 the pacings balanced cause some players would rather not go through a story and would just wanna play the game if you want a story just read a book. I saw this argument cause i wondered why some dont like undertale 2 the alt route kinda gives you a chance to replay because you would be able to experience all of the truth that happened also to enjoy the gameplay tbh if you think the gameplay is boring why not just search on youtube to see the new contents 3 cmon man even tho its different with everyone the warning should still be recommended for people who are depressed. its there so they can get ready for the impact even if it wont affect them its better to be safe then sorry.

"Accidental Murder" is not a thing; if it's an accident it's not murder. The real evil they did was make up the disgusting lie that they did and ruin the name of his sister more, whom he claimed to love. P.S. suicide is never the answer; it, without a doubt, 100% of the time sends one to Hell; be strong and don't give in.
