    Looking at Petscop has always given me that sorta of Anton Ego moment in Ratatouille. Takes me back to being a kid and fearing things like Jadusable's Majora's Mask and NES Godzilla. It puts a smile on my face to know that mysterious creepy gaming content will probably never go away.

    I get why some people want more things spelled out for them with Petscop, but I also think the ambiguity is partly the point and also a strength. The series is about abuse, and frankly someone on the outside will never fully know or grasp what a victim went through with their abuser. I also think that a lot of the answers are there. They're not definite, but there's plenty to piece together in several different ways that are completely valid. I dunno, I think too many people want every single thing spoonfed to them and it's tiring

    In that interview, Tony says he likes ambiguity, and wants it to stand on it's own for it's own sake. The criticisms about how "he didn't even know what the story was" don't matter. Who cares if he didn't know? That's the point. No one, not even the creator, gets all the answers.

    That's how I felt when analyzing a piece of literature some dude wrote a hundred years ago in school. Like, did he REALLY mean all those things when he wrote it? Probably not.

    A plan from the beginning always is appealing, because we desire to know what is true. What was REALLY meant. What's 'right'. An innate desire for justice and sense

    Sometimes, authors don’t want to explain because there’s nothing to “fix” or “fill in” by explaining. Perhaps they made a mistake and don’t want to build a faulty story on a malformed foundation. Sometimes they just want you to figure it out, but sometimes they themselves can’t

    Petscop is one of my favorite pieces of web horror content. Takes me back to 2009 when I first discovered Marble Hornets and there was such an air of mystery around it. Like - what even is this? What am I watching? And why is it so creepy? I am actually happy that Tony does not want to explain anything and wants to keep the ambiguity. I think a lot of Petscops charm comes from its mystery and room for interpretation. Just like David Lynch is infamous for refusing to elaborate about his films, I’m glad to see Tony is taking that same perspective. And of course, great video as always!!

    I'm a complete outside that only briefly heard of Petscop before and forgot about it, but it sounds like exactly what the creator said in the video: the project got too big, too fast, and without time for him to prepare for it. So instead of risking ruining his story he'd worked so hard on, he decided to step out from behind the curtain and end it there. A very brave choice.

    I don't know why, but i remember finding about the petscop videos rather early (4-5 videos posted at the time) but I never got hooked because I felt that it lacked ps1 vibes, which made it feel fake right off the bat for me and wasn't interested and didn't make me feel scared either. There are other pieces of creepypasta/fan creations that made me become obsessed instanty but this wasn't for me i suppose. Regardless I am very glad it spiked so much interest and discussion for many years, reminds me when I was young discussing Ben Drowned or even Yume Nikki theories in online forms. Glad to see uploads from you again :) you're one of my favorite creators

    I'll be honest, past a certain point, I feel like the series was just.. kind of splurging content out without and rhyme or reason to it. they felt.. disconnected.. without the narration, and felt as if maybe there was meant to be more, but the creator just give of gave up and spat out everything they had left in terms of content, just to be able to end the series.

    One thing that bothered me about this is that it reminded me of a real life crime. An estranged father kidnapped his daughter because he fell under the cult like influence of a man who believed the daughter was the reincarnation of his dead wife. The daughter was never found.

    Great video; however I need to say that whilst I think Petscop is an interesting idea and very well done; it still hasn't sold me on the idea of ARG's (and I don't think anything ever will). I just don't think I am the kind of people who enjoys them. For me, I enjoy games to see what it means to *me*; whilst ARG's just seem to be finding just 'what it means' in general. Lore is becoming boring, easy and exploitable. It's like if I wrote lore for a broken toilet. Sure, it's easy to do and it makes the toilet seem more important than it actually is; but it's still full of shit. Imagine if someone close to you had just passed away and you watched a movie that helped you come to terms with the fragility of life and the suddenness of death (something like the Japamese movie Afterlife, fantastic watch; highly recommended) Then imagine someone came up to you and tried to explain that the movie was haunted by the director; who was killed by a family member who was part of a cult and that there is hidden clues and messages within the film that give you hints towards this obfuscated narrative. Did that make the film any deeper? Any more poignant or meaningful? Ugh; no. It didn't. If anything it trivializes the themes that are present and actually makes the entire piece of media feel even more shallow. I mean I get it; kids love this FNAF lore shit because they are too young to apply critical thought to a narrative. They wouldn't care that James killed his wife because he was sexually frustrated, and felt he had the right to take someone elses life just so he could continue on with his own. They wouldn't think about the themes of toxic masculinity; mental and psychical illness and abuse. They would just want to know how Silent Hill was created and the cult behind it. Missing the entire fucking point of the single narrative. (I say this like its satire but Silent Hill origins was actually that in a game.)

    Yeah, I can understand that. What's weird is that before youtube and other forms of social media, I didn't really get wrapped up in lore and theories as much as we do today. It's very interesting.

  • @novelezra

    @novelezra

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@PressStartToContinueYT There is absolutely nothing wrong with lore and theories but they shouldn't be used in lieu of good writing/characters. Earthbound is surrounded by theories and lore but they are discussed due to the reverence for the game. They aren't *the* game. Which is what we are having now. Mulholland Drive is a movie about a tragic love story; a mystery that involves a box with a strange power. The film isn't about the box though as much as what happens to the characters because of it. The characters are what make the movie so beautiful. However it seems that a lot of media is now focusing on the box. People want a puzzle to unravel. Which I think is great! I love puzzles! But they need to be in service of the narrative and the other way around. Personally I think any mystery that you can truly solve is boring. I still don't understand fully Kentucky Route Zero and I don't want to

    This is generally why I don't follow these types of ARG-style games. They make something unique but beyond having a 'eureka! i've developed an original idea!' concept with their project, they lose interest/get bored/forget and simply don't follow through, which seems to be the case of this one. I can forgive creators if they simply had life get in the way and they had to stop and probably forgot where to go from there, but in this case it felt like Petscop's creator was asked, "Is that it?" and went "ya idk lol guess so", lol. gonna be honest when i say that FNAF as ridiculous as it was/is, one can still kinda follow along and make up their own ending or or use the pieces provided to assume the ending. I feel like the angry user's post at 19:05, Petscop went absolutely nowhere imo and now just feels like it belongs in the generic "spoopy game i found at a yardsale" story bin lol.

Edit: no I'm not a pussy I've sat through at watched some other horror series like Mandela catalogue And a bit of the walten files (not the 1 hour long final episode as I dont have that time) and played many horror games and playing an underrated (moreso unknown) arg game called shipwrecked 64

    @@PressStartToContinueYT To my knowledge, the series itself never explicitly stated as such. People derive it from: 1. the bathroom scenes in Petscop 11 (which you are probably referring to): there is a dialogue between Rainer and (presumably) Anna about using the bathroom, plus a pet's description uses very harsh language while referring to 'check the bathroom' 2. the description of certain videos - I forgot which onces exactly, but the Reddit doc should contain a transcript 3. the bathroom-tomb track from the ost. The track never appeared in the series, only in the ost Overall, these lead a lot of the members to conclude that Rainer committed suicide. While the pieces are there, I personally believe his death was in a metaphorical sense, as other deaths (such as Lina's) are seemingly impossible without either the person being alive or needing a complex reason (alternate dimensions, etc).
