In this KZread video, we explore Lisbon and why it has become so popular among tourists. They reminisce about their first visit to the city five years ago, falling in love with its beautiful architecture, culture, and food. They speak to several tourists from different countries who share their love for Lisbon, mentioning its gorgeous weather, friendly locals, and fantastic cuisine.
We sail the river in a vintage boat, marveling at the beauty of Lisbon from the water. They emphasize that experiencing the city from the water is a must-do activity for any visitor. Many tourists they speak with rave about Lisbon, highlighting its food and charming atmosphere as standout features.
While most visitors are enamored with the city, some note a few negative aspects, such as occasional unfriendliness from locals like bus drivers and the city's increasing cost of living. Nevertheless, Lisbon continues to attract people from all over the world with its irresistible charm and diverse offerings.
We also speak with locals about the city's rapid transformation since 2007. The locals acknowledge that Lisbon has become more international and open to the outside world, but they also express concerns about rising rents and living costs. Despite these challenges, the locals still welcome tourists and enjoy being part of a vibrant, evolving city.
In conclusion, the video highlights how Lisbon has become a beloved destination for its beauty, culture, and cuisine, ticking all the boxes for a perfect city getaway. Although the city faces challenges due to its growing popularity, it remains a place that captures the hearts of visitors and locals alike.

I think lisbon is wonderful of course. So full of beautiful colours, buildings, history, good food, et cetera. I don't find people to be as nice as in the north of portugal. I actually think they're cold. As a portuguese I do love lisbon, but if I were to live there, I wouldn't be happy. Too much traffic, too many people. It triggers my anxiety. Just for a short visit. For living... always our beautiful island madeira. I say our, because it's as much yours as it is mine! It's so nice to see how strongly you feel about portugal. May you be forever happy in this country/island, for as long as you choose to make them your home!

This was such a fun video to watch! I like the on the street interview style. My family and I moved here in late summer 2021. We were blown away by the open and welcoming nature of the people we met. Of course, this was the honeymoon phase of moving abroad and everything feels magical. Today Lisbon still feels just as magical and every time I spend the day in the city my spirit feels nourished. Lisbon is perfectly imperfect. She is often raw and sometimes refined. She is simple and noble at the same time. Personally, I am crazy about Lisbon and when real life gets to be a bit much, I hop on the train from Estoril and treat myself to a walk around the city. Having said all of that, once you’ve been here long enough to get past the rose colored glasses phase one cannot help but be aware of the impact that selling her (Lisbon) off to the highest bidder has on the authenticity of the city and the lives of real people. Rental prices are out of control which of course forces out generations of people who have given the city its culture, beauty and charm. Progress can be a double edged sword. Keep up the great work! Your channel was a driving force to move to Lisbon sight unseen.❤️

Thanks for your wonderful comment, Mel! Lisbon is still magical, but it definitely is changing a lot. Our worries is that it becomes too polished without its quirkiness. If you take cities like London, Paris, Copenhagen, Barcelona etc they have become too polished and perfect to the point of declining. There is nothing left to come for because everything has been streamlined by huge corporations. In other words, there is no soul left, which is saddening. There's no way around it though. Eventually Lisbon will face a decline once has visited the city to the point of fatigue. Anyway, let's hope for the best :)

I guess the main reason why Lisbon has become Europe's most wanted city is social media. Since everyone is posting their meals, nice spots etc. cities like Lisbon became more and more known all over the world. It's nice that people can enjoy this beautiful city but the side effects aren't great. A few years ago it was affordable to live there for most people, but now it's just for the rich.

  • @MMartec

    @MMartec

You may be right, but I don't think it's a bad thing, as it helps the city center to be revamped and refurbished, made beautiful... And, that was always the case at the center of cities like Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Vienna, well almost all major cities in Europe really.. where up to the middle class people get smaller appartments if they wanna live in nice areas in the city center, or go into the suburbs but get bigger houses, cheaper prices and often live in more recent or completely new buildings.. Thing is that the lower classes of society in Lisbon used to live in the center (gave it charisma sure, and even the birth of Fado and etc.. but the city also looked degraded, poor), whereas the rich used to live in Cascais and other places with a sea view west from the city.. Now it's all changing, now the center is where the rich prefer to live, and the rest actually prefers to be out of the city in modern buildings in places like Oeiras, Odivelas, SIntra, Amadora, Loures, or the south bank of the river... 😉 Of course big investments in new transport systems must be developed and quick, because otherwise the money people save in a home in the suburbs, will be spend in using a car, parking fees and lose hours of life a day in traffic or commuting by transports, (if you're lucky to have a train line close to you it's easier of course) 😂

I believe the major problem is moslty the big speculators. Buying tons of flats for selling 2-4 years later without caring about the rest, just getting the benefit. I wish this could be prevented, so the price growth would be less artificial. Also the economy should be less tourist oriented and more welcoming to portuguese workers so they could stay in Portugal instead of going to work to Germany etc, bringing value to Portugal and allowing more modern construction and limiting the effects of the real estate bubble. It's a wide and sad problem.

As American travelers - and certifiable commenters - we have our Pros and Cons comparing each place mentioned in your video: Madeira, Canary Islands, and Lisbon. 🏝️ Canary Islands (specifically Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) has perfect weather year round and beautiful, sprawling sandy beaches, but the restaurants cater to British tourists so sadly no flavor (or flavour, lol), and the seafront architecture is Eastern Bloc style so such an ugly eyesore amidst an otherwise beautiful landscape. Rarely rains and summer boasts “la panza de burro,” so a nice fluffy gray cloud hangs in the sky during the hottest part of the day, keeping Las Palmas the perfect temperature. 🏞️ Madeira is second best in weather with stunning scenery, ample hiking, charming towns, and *amazing* food + Poncha, but no sandy beaches and Funchal has a HUGE problem with incessant barking dogs. Also... roosters, terribly-placed power lines, and loud stinky busses can really kill the vibe, but we are still madly in love with everything else Madeira has to offer! 🏰 Lisbon is overflowing with so much history, colorful streets, beautiful castles, and arguably the best pastries, but the cost of everything has gone up SO much over the past few years that it’s almost as expensive as America, although the quality of life, food + ingredients is far superior to that in the States. And Portuguese wine is undoubtedly the best we have ever had anywhere in the world! Aaaaand, as always, another great video you guys :)

I guess what you see depends on your own perspective. I first visited Lisbon in 1979 as a boy, and it was soon after the Revolution, and Portugal was poor and many years away from joining the EU. Then I started coming as an adult regularly about 1993, and if you think nobody knew Lisbon before 2016, that is just your experience. I knew it. I stopped coming around 2010 because I moved to Australia to live. More recently, because of all of these 'new' people 'discovering' Lisbon, which has been the Capital of Portugal for a long time, now the expats have made rents so expensive by creating new demand that can not be fulfilled without displacing Portuguese, it is being spoilt. It isn't Disneyworld. This is peoples home. Personally, apart from those in business which directly benefits from this 'new' interest, the 'Airbnb' landlords ruining the local rental market, the 'discovery' is a very bad thing. You have not discovered anything. You are not contributing anything needed. It is damaging. It has been there for hundreds of years, except now local people can't afford it. Is that good? This benefits nobody except the new arrivals themselves, at the expense of the locals. I think it is a shame. Maybe analyse the effect on local people instead of being so pleased about the food?

I'm not a hardcore "foodie" but I don't remember having especially great food in Lisbon. Probably just got unlucky with my restaurant choices. Oddly enough, the overall "best value" for meals was the food court in a mall near my hotel in the Saldana district. With that said, I am definitely "crazy" about Lisbon - LOVED it there!

Hi Joel and Amelia. That was a nice video to watch. When that lady said that some locals were not that friendly, we need to understand their side. I heard a few times that the locals or the majority of the locals are getting pretty annoyed with the lack of civilised tourism. The “Leave it better than you found” is not found in some cheap tourism. I heard in some areas, at early hours, when the tourists leave the alojamentos locais, they leave the rubbish everywhere. Mass tourism comes with a price unfortunately.

I have lived in Portugal for 12 yrs now and sadly this is true when a place becomes heavily promoted by outsiders with other interests ie in our area of the Algarve we got 'party promoters' flying in people to 'bomb' local villages. It was awful. rude arrogant people who abused the locals by getting legless drunk etc. I love Lisbon and fear this over promotion will have this negative effect. Already locals have been moved out of their homes by greedy landlords putting up the rents to accommodate wealthy tourists . I fear it will lose its wonderful character

I think most people when on a tourist trip dont intellectualize why they love a place they are visiting. Mostly its an emotional response. I think we intellectualize after when we return home.

hey folks - I have a question for you. I'll be in Portugal (from Australia) in roughly a month. I am trying to figure the best way to get from Porto to Ericeira, seems as though I get the train to Lisbon, then double back by bus? Google says it should take less than an hour by bus to Ericeira from Lisbon, but anywhere I go to look at ticket prices says the bus trip is 2hr 30, which seems strange. This is seemingly way more difficult than I thought it would be, any chance you can help a brother out with some genuine inside info?? ❤

This video made me really sad. As someone who used to live there and had to move out due to the life being so expensive in Lisbon it is really sad to see everyone enjoy Lisbon and saying it is accessible when it is only to tourists. Lisbon has changed drastically in the past 6 years, to only cater to tourism and to expats. It is really sad to see. To only see the good side of Lisbon is reductive , Lisbon is beautiful but it is only for someone who isn't Portuguese or doesn't live there with Portuguese salaries. I follow you guys so this is not to offend either you or anyone in this video of course.

Lisbon? Pay London prices. Get Istanbul standard. Michelin restaurants in Lisbon? Pay double price compared to Spain. Get mediocre food. 'Normal' restaurants are good though. Weather is generally windy and cold. Dress accordingly.
