    As a Hwoarang main and still learning, (I know most of his move list), even though he is a pressure character Hwoarang doesn’t have defensive tools so you have to put pressure on him FIRST before he puts pressure on you. Another thing, Hwoarang mains have to learn to choose our battles and not do everything in flowcharts all the time through RFS!!!! Yes it’s a game changer and very aggressive UNTIL you run into somebody that knows his RFS is one of his most vulnerable stances in the game which can be exploited big time!!! Hwoarangs need to learn to mixup up and not go into flamingo all the time and learn how to actually play and flow with the pace of the game. Many people don’t know but Hwoarang has bad matchups especially will all female characters on the roster because he is so linear. Just my two cents.

    This technically applies to everyone. You think they don't need to know the matchup, but they do. The reason ur losing to him is cause it's usually easier for Hwo players to apply pressure when none of u know the matchup. So u spend the entire match not getting to do much cause u don't know what to duck or sidestep. And he spends the entire match not needing to worry about defense, cause his pressure isn't being countered. This isn't Hwo players not needing to know the matchup, but rather them not being put in a situation where they have to know it, since u don't even get a chance to apply ur own characters pressure. This is mostly true for low level Hwo players, since higher up you will definitely need to learn it.

  • @cloudjin893

    @cloudjin893

    2 ай бұрын

    @riceyboi7069 this is what i mean tho. Hwo players will cruise through lower ranks without having to learn a matchup while others will have to learn them day 1. Then hwo players after reaching that rank breakpoint where they have to learn matchups, they say their chara ter is weak or is super hard. Its the fact that they have to learn matchups is what makes them think this character isnt annoying to play against.

Ducking him isn't as hard as u think, just takes some time. It's not easy, but it's possible. Also, even if I did main Hwo, that doesn't change the fact that at some point both you and the Hwo player will need to know matchups if u wanna keep climbing. Like I said, the lower Hwo players don't learn matchups cause they braindead flowchart u to death. Higher up tho? They can't flowchart against good players, and need to play unpredictably/also know the match up. My whole point was at the higher ranks, u learning the matchup will eventually get u further than a Hwo who has reached his limit cause his flowchart has gaps and highs that ppl know to duck/interrupt and keep him honest.

    I dont really understand that standpoint to be honest. To me, winning against those very difficult matchups like Hwo or Ling is sometimes even more satisfying than winning against a character that requires less knowledge. Both can be very satisfying depending on the player you fought, so I dont get why winning against Hwo doesnt feel good. You either get the satisfaction from winning against a bad Hwo, kinda putting him back to where he belongs. Or you win against a very strong player which is always satisfying. I dont get it honestly.

    I found understanding the matchup pretty simple. The only tricky part is understanding the hwo player in a few games. One game a hwo will use lows and highs every chance he gets from rf, another will play safe options by picking mids and try lock you down with rff options. I learned to play the character myself because im a psycho who likes to learn lots of character. The character is designed to be string heavy because he doesnt have good defensive options. One good read or sidestep and hwo gets launched since you need to have a flowy offence between stances. Playing a character is the easiest way to understand a character. But the interesting thing i realized is that most hwos pick a way to play the character and dont adapt until like kishin or bushin since these people in these ranks actually know the match up. Hwo isnt an easy character, but he does carry because of the lower rank players lack of interest to understand the character, which i understand.

    The part that drives me up the wall the most with Hwoarang, and other string based characters like Eddy, is that the offense is so effective they never learn defense. Its never rewarding to fight them because every round is a stomp in one players favor. Either they get the flowchart going and win, or they get interrupted once and dont know what to do.

    The annoying part about Hwo is the timing and infinite number of alternative sequences: low,high mid high,high,mid,low mid,high high,mid high low,high etc. and that's not even accounting for stance pressure, power crush and heat/rage 😂

I'm also not sure how whiff punishment can be predictable? If you are punishing a whiff, the opponent isnt predicting anything. His whiff punishment is very good, b3 and jfsr are some of the best whiff punishers in the game

    Not exactly. If you keep him from getting his offense started you won't have to deal with the mixups. You can either create your own offense pressure or play a very good counter game (hence Steve is a bad matchup for Hwo). Both prevents him from starting his pressure. Even when he starts his pressure there are lots of weaknesses in them such as no blocking in flamingo, all his low crush being punishable and essentially stopping his offense and ending his turn, the pressure containing a lot of duckable highs, being linear, and often stuck in stance if you back off. If be commits with pressure you can power crush and he is stuck in flamingo unable to block it. Duck and dick jab or even stand jab. Of course he has options, but he's guessing as much as you are.

    Throws were naturally stronger in Tekken tag 2 and previous entries. Everyone technically had a throw game and the break windows were shorter. But beginner counter play against Hwo would be to low jab interrupt his chains from time to time. Blocking his mid options tend to end his pressure. Though for some reason they gave Hwo a plus on block mid low crushing option in T8 which lessens the commitment on his mids. Once they are conditioned with the low jab interruption, watch and block the incoming mid. Though low rank Hwo will just keep eating the low jabs so feel free to do it every time. Other than that, side step/walk his approach since his pressure starters are quite linear. These simple tactics will get you quite far in the matchup for beginner and mid level.

    When we talk about broken we talk about 1 person picking up 1 character to an avg/above avg level vs someone else doing the same w their character. .. As this is how casuals will play. But pros will lab their character against all others and memorize shii like they dont got a life outside these games... Big ups to them... I just barely remember some strings w some characters... Mind you im a casual on tekken and novice on FGs... Bit hitting Elder God multiple times on MK1 without YT combos(im against YT combos as youll tell by my raven gameplay 😂😂) but some characters hwoarang... Will be broken. Bc those players will have access to his mixups and movelist... While anyone fighting him now has to lab their own and lab hwoarang... So for me broken on a casual level comes down to ease of pickup/ease of learning vs your opponent ...

    The issues I have with Hwo in T8 have more to do with the overall balancing and design of T8. First being the Heat Mechanic, it's such an annoying gimmick to have moves that are homing/armored/mid/safe that are ALSO Heat Engagers or buffed in Heat. It's just not fun. And some of the issues around balancing the system itself or just generic bugs. One time I used Leroy's d/b1+2 parry on Hwoarang, and even though it parried his punch, my attack just whiffed and I got blown up for it. That same match I used my Power Crush to beat his string, and he literally did a punch into a tech throw which completely froze my Power Crush. So even the system mechanics have been inconsistent in doing what they're supposed to do. Which just adds to the frustration.

    Edit: I lowballed the fuck out of the roster count, it’s 33 soon to be 34, my bad This video is gonna be my go to for why Whorang is so damn annoying to fight, your Victor video did a great job of showing his BS and so on, but also showing how he’s legit minus on 90% of his kit, and how he hurts for lows and struggles against some things, but this is legit just “you gotta learn how to play him” which is my biggest issue with the character. I don’t mind labbing a character, hell I’ve done it in plenty of other fighting games (Fighterz, Guilty Gear, and Street Fighter) but with Whorang you have to learn every single in and out of a characters kit cause he is plus on LITERALLY EVERYTHING and has options out of his options, as a newcomer to Tekken that’s where my issue lies. I will learn him, but it’s kinda mad annoying to have to open up a whole ass character guide to learn how to deal with one character out of a roster of 27 characters (soon to be 28) I will “get gud” but I’m seriously not gonna enjoy it. So far he’s the only character I’ve had to do this with, cause every other character has fucking MINUS FRAMES. I play a buddy of mine who I meat through Tekken 8 and he plays Whorang from time to time, (usually when I’ve won a few more sets then him) no true full knowledge of the character just using what he knows from a old friend of his, and it feels like each time I figure out how to deal with some of his, and let’s be honest here, straight up bullshit, he has some other option that will get me killed for trying the solution to the prior one, he is the nastiest hard to read 50/50 machine of any fighter I’ve played

    80% of that difficulty is artificial and due purely to knowledge checks and bad design choices. All of this is excused as legacy, but it really is just a tumor that was never excised and just left to grow. You’re essentially hard locked from the actual meat and potatoes of any fighting game (mind games, footsies, spacing) to a large extent because you have to learn how to counter characters and not the player piloting them.

    Absolutely always you criticize this character his fanboys will defend it saying "It's hard to use", that's all they say, but I will always think that's a joke, the player that has to do the real work is the player trying to defend against him, the typical Hwoarang player is just spamming non-stop strings hoping for a counter-hit or just win every round with infinite pokes, without any skill or any need to defend, defense being something so important in this game, the Hwoarang player doesn't know what is that as his game plan is to apply so much spam and pressure he doesn't have to defend at any point, and that is "hard to do"... F.... Hwoarang
