Why Equipment Will Be Banned In 2019 | GCN Tech Show Ep. 48

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to the GCN Tech Show - this week we look at products that could be banned due to a revised UCI regulation, we look into carbon filament winding, plus your upgrades, bike of the week and the bike vault. Plus, this week the buzzer is back - possibly for one week only!

According to revised UCI regulation 1.3.006 from 2019, there is set to be a shakeup that could affect tech. Equipment being used must be publicly available and advertised with pricing and delivered within 120 days of placing your order. No pressure on the brands then!
Last week we asked what had happened to graphene, and you got involved in the comments! We take a look through the best responses we had there...
Hunt has a new carbon spoked wheelset that hits the scales at just 1290g a pair! While the low weight and carbon spokes are exciting what is really cool here is the manufacturing process of the rim. Hunt is using a process called filament winding. This has been around a while, other wheel brands are starting to use it too and it has big implications for carbon wheels. Traditionally carbon wheels have been made by laying up pre-preg carbon by hand around formers and placing it into moulds - similar to the process we showed for frames in the look factory video.

How about the special Continental tubulars (Pro LTD)? tyre's that aren't available to the public or in shops! Not sure if that is the models on those tyre's with out going back and looking at your pro bikes of the peleton spec. that you do on the team bikes! I know you guys have mention that several time on the Continental tyres!

We've always had trickle down of tech from the pro peleton, the new rule should in theory just speed up the process of it coming to market. I'd also imagine that product designers will have to factor in the cost of commercial production into the design lifecycle of any innovation more than they do now with genuine 'one-off' components. While this might reign in some of the more extreme ideas it should benefit the public in the long run with the improved manufacturing technology to make these pro items commercially available.

The big problem I have with this UCI move is what it means for prototyping things in the peloton. If the teams are working with the brands on some new wheels or something and they decide that it's not worth going forwards with (e.g. because it's not good enough) they'll still have to sell it under the UCI rules. Now selling sub standard items damages the brands reputation. That could reduce the number of new & funky bits on the bikes as brands are too afraid to give them to the teams as they have to protect their brand. Some examples I can think of this year is Pirelli releasing tubular tyres after developing them with Mitchelton-Scott, or the Specialized power meter. If there was a risk that those products could fell flat or had to go back to the drawing board, the brands wouldn't do that next year because of this rule.

I would guess they're trying to limit spending, since spending a lot of money on new advantageous tech isn't as tempting if your rivals can pop down to the shop and buy it for them selves. Don't think it will work. At least not with the 12month deadline. So I would expand on your claim an say it is a "non-solution" to a problem they've invented. ;)

All of the UCI's "safety" rules are nominally about "safety" and "fairness" but in reality the most important guiding doctrine is to come up with enforceable rules that homogenize equipment for the sake of the markets. Established players love homogenized markets. This presumably makes cycling a safer investment for equipment sponsors. OTOH, a side effect of the weight restrictions (dumb) is that lots of riders started to ride full time with power meters and other gear that were once considered not worth using because of the weight (also dumb). SO, I agree that it's a lot of bullshit but modern schools don't teach caveat emptor or critical thinking. They teach Social Justice, which is "criticism" with built in assumptions. We're a world full of arrogant idiots.

Seems to be a silly rule. What’s stopping a manufacturer from saying, “sure, anyone can buy this skin suit (or whatever), it’s priced at $5,000,000 (or whatever ridiculous markup they choose).” If someone actually places an order, the manufacturer can surely make on in 4 months and still have a huge profit. Their team of course gets them for free or cost.

Am I going to be crying my eyes out😭 that I cant get every last bit of tech that the pros use? Probably not. Am I glad that they can use non commercially available products? Yes, the reason being that this is the only way that prototype tech can really be put through it's paces in the pro peloton. It allows companies to try new things an experiment without the fear that they cannot change things. I think you need that flexability and freedom in product testing. If you didn't then you would never get a team like Cervelo test team! The one thing that I would like to see a change in is the way that pro bikes are sold at the end of the year. That would be great if there was a way that every fan could know that if they had the cash 💵 then you might be able to buy your favourite pros bike... Sadly does feel like the UCI is focusing on these smaller details which they can change an enforce instead of really bringing about the bigger changes which are needed...😔

2:33 "Does this new regulation apply... to equipment which we've seen used in the past?" Surely it can't. It's a fundamental tenet of law that you can't make things retroactively illegal and that you can't retroactively change a contract without the other party's consent. The UCI would get sued to kingdom come if they tried to make it retroactive.

Ollie - I'm going to tell you this story to maybe help you feel better about those 10 years spent studying chemistry. I speak as a retired 70 year old, a cyclist, who pushed through without a break from kindergarten to degrees from the University of California in chemistry and mathematics, which I used to get into medical school. That occupied my attention for the next 4 years, followed by a 4 year residency. The period from kindergarten through residency was devoted solely to education. At 30, I was done with school. So done. Could it be worse? Oh, yes - it could. As I approached my B.S. in chemistry, I had the best T.A. of my entire 4 undergraduate years, finishing his Ph. D. We bonded over reprehensibly sardonic senses of humor, and the shared quirk of owning a Schwinn Paramount. Mine was stock, but the most beautiful bike I've ever seen since, blistering white with chrome forks and hand-painted red pin striping (this was in 1970). His was chrome plated, which couldn't have helped with weight, but it did not matter. He finished his 5 year Ph. D. at the same time I got my B.S., and evidently decided that chemistry wasn't IT. I asked him "what's next then, huh?", and he told me he'd gotten into medical school, the same class I was entering. After 4 years of that he took an internship in Internal Medicine, moving on to an additional 2 years of residency. After those 3 years he decided that Internal Medicine wasn't IT, but Psychiatry just might be, and applied for a Psych residency. He had always been a magnet for the female of the species, generally holding down two women at once before polyamory was even a thing. He then decided that heterosexuality wasn't IT, and became bisexual, then entirely homosexual. He moved to San Francisco to open his Psychiatry practice, 2 blocks over from Castro St.. This was about 1982, just after HIV made it's pop-culture breakout. I think you can see where this leads.... He came to see me in 1983, on what I now realize was a "Good Bye" tour of his friends. So, Ollie - hold onto that Ph.D. and be suspicious of seeing "IT" just over the horizon.

So much more on that wooden bike, the cabling was interior routed. The handlebars looked like it was from a machine in a fitness room, which I thought was inventive looking. The only thing i would change on it would be to put maple pedals on it!

It is important that the tech used is real equipment that people can buy. First because it helps the biking economy. But more importantly it keeps people in touch with their sport. NASCAR used to be about cars that were available at dealer showrooms that teams bought and souped up for racing. When they switched to pure race cars scratch built with fiberglass bodies that resembled actual cars, the long slow decline in interest began.

Is there any stipulation on the pricing - what's to stop a team from making some special compoment for their riders but only making it available for a completley unreasonable price (e.g. £2,000,000)? 🤔

I suggest the UCI implement a one bike rule for the three Grand Tours, no special TT bike or climbing bike. Allow each rider 3 bikes, of the same spec. Teams would then be more prudent and more mechanically sympathetic and the best all round rider would come out on top. Discuss. By the way, Bring back the cow bell.

The commercial availability of professional teams' kit is presumably intended to achieve either or both of.... 1) keeping R'n'D budgets focused on things that are relevant do the consumer market 2) keeping professional races close enough to the rest of the cycling world to be interesting to cyclists, so maintaining viewing figures and sponsorship revenue

It is bad with rules that you only know in the future have been obeyed. Would we have to wait 1 year and 120 days after a race to announce the winner? And what if the rider was told that the the product would be marketed in the future, but the supplier failed to do so. Would the rider be disqualified though being in good faith?
