Why Graphene Bikes Haven't Taken Over The World | GCN Tech Show Ep. 47

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome to the GCN Tech Show. This week we’ve got electric commuter bikes with their own names like Adam and Hannah, tyre trimming, some very nice bikes that belong to you, plus our talking point - what happened to graphene?

Schindelhauer is launching 4 urban e-bikes at the start of 2019. The names of the bikes are people's names so there is nothing fancy here! We’ve got Adam with a MAHLE rear hub motor, and Karl, Heinrich and Hannah all use Bosch mid frame motors. Hannah incidentally will have a step-through frame design. Plus Karl will be the world's first single speed bike with a Bosch motor!
Graphene can be described as a single layer of graphite. It was discovered by two Russian scientists Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester It’s an allotrope of carbon, other allotropes include diamond, coal, buckminsterfullerene and carbon nanotubes.
Although some products claim to feature graphene its important to understand it isn’t in a large scale sheet, as our imagination may suggest. They aren’t built from graphene in the traditional sense. Most commercially available graphene looks like a black powder and it is small amounts of this black powder that are incorporated into the carbon fibre resin in the case of Dassi or rubber compound in the case of Vittoria Corsa G+. What we have therefore is composite materials, that contain graphene.
What applications would you like to see graphene used for? Let us know in the comments. 👇

As long as bike R&D mostly gets developed by retired Pro Cyclists like M. Cipollini, Merckx, Etc. ( who aren't engineers or rocket scientists ) or by the hippy type bros and dudes that don't smoke pot anymore, I don't think Graphene will ever mix with the manufacture of bicycles or producing super bikes. Vittoria may have used some in their tires but their tires still flat more than a lot of other brands so I believe it was just total bullshit. Graphene is not going to be the next miracle material for bikes. We really only need to look at the aerospace industry to figure out what comes next.

It might have an application in Garmin displays or e-bike capacitors, not in anything structural. Dust just isn't that useful for making things.

Graphene uses: 1) replace the wiring for shifting by embedding in the frames 2) connecting power to motors, lights, power meters, shifters, dropper posts from a central battery or power source 3) To connect the electromagnets that will pull Ollies hair down 4) paint on bikes that will change color with the charge applied 5) ion drive bikes to reduce drag amp.economist.com/science-and-technology/2018/11/21/the-first-journey-of-an-aircraft-with-an-ion-drive

Graphene MAY eventually trickle down to the cycling industry, but well behind the industrial applications that would merit the extensive R&D required to fabricate and implement the material in favor of existing technologies. Carbon fiber took a similar hype-to-pedestrian once upon a time. It's fun to dream about it in the meantime - would love to see what designers would concoct for a graphene based triathlon hyper aero bike with a material lighter and stronger that carbon fiber alone.

One of the highlights of the show for me is the bike vault but you guys are killing it, your radar is way off. Example; the Trek that looks like the owner has taken a half assed pic on the way to the dairy gets a super nice! But the guy who has grovelled his way up the hills and taken a pretty scenic pic in Brisbane gets a nice! You really need to go back to when the vault made it's first few appearances, there are rules you know .... It's not always about the bike ....

Absolutely cracks me up when Ollie goes Chemistry professor! Gotta love a good atomic bond section! I king of think that probably Graphene won't end up being this wonder material that it was hyped up to be. I think that as Ollie says then it will have limited uses and probably will end up being in a composite material but I will wait and see. In all honesty Carbon fibre probably has a long way to progress in the bike industry to get to the same levels as it is used in other areas so I look to see how high the quality can get with carbon before we end up with graphene added into the mix! Absolutely love the bike vault and Ollie you really have to work on your accents! Being from not far away from Dunbar in Scotland I am confident to say that if you talked like that then you wouldn't be invited back on any local rides! That Cannondale, just every time that I was looking at it made me think that it was a Bianchi, just from the colour! I think that I know what Jon means with one colour just becoming very iconic to a brand, would be very interesting to see a Bianchi in other colours, think that is why the Pantani yellow and celeste stood out so much. Love the show and keep it up chaps!

The lightweight Cannondale is a stunner, but its stem needs desperate intervention, maybe some of what the original stem on Todd's bike was taking. Some....not the full dose. Also, Ollie needs to voice the commentary that's going on in his head. The smirks and sly grins make it clear that he's censoring himself now and again.

I shared the video with Si with this message Thought this was interesting and worth sharing, as Trek is an industry leader of bicycle manufacturing is something that is/ will be looked at in the future? It would be great for both frames and Bicycle components, especially for mountain biking though the video focuses on road bikes. This was the response from Trek: Hi James, that is a really interesting topic, whilst it is not something being used right now, it is definitely going to be an option in the future as the industry pushes the development of bikes on where different materials/techniques are used to create industry leading bikes. Thanks for sharing with us - Trek Team

I personally have a townbike with a 3speed internal geared hub which of course has a singlespeed chain. When waxed and using a chaincase, I really rarely have to clean my chain, like simply swap out for a fresh one every 500km and clean + rewax the old chain. Belt drive might be the future, but it's still so expensive for a townbike that could be stolen. The rear cogs are like 100 quid vs 3-5 quid for a shimano nexus cog. Also, the belts are about 80€ or more, so the first investment is quite expensive. But my main concern would be efficiency. Belts rob like 10% of the energy plus internal geared hub which have between 93-97% efficiency makes a total loss of 12,7%-16,3%. that's nothing to be sniffed at

I think we're starting to see more Graphene products. It used to be about ceramic coatings for automobiles which advertised 2+ years of protection. However, Adams Graphene UV auto coating is advertised with 5+ years of protection? I'm not sure if the results are conclusive, but my point is we're starting to see more products that appear to show benefits. Graphene in Vittoria tires seems cool. My Djokovic Head tennis racquet has a graphene composite and it is, by far, the best racquet I've ever used (and I've used all of the top end racquets from major brands over the past decade). I just bought Anker wireless earbuds that have graphene drivers - amazing performance at not much more cost. Not saying graphene is going to revolutionize the cycling industry, but I believe it may add to strength, durability and lightness, which in turn, should lead to some performance gains..

And if I can mount the lighter and stiffer 30mm spindle to any frame then why bring out the dub system as the one crank fits every frame solution? I was realy liking the T47 concept because it's a threaded solution that can fit every crank but now bsa already does exactly this. pls explain this in the next show I realy don't get it.

Vittoria has been incorporating Graphene in their tyres for a few years now. You should have included that in your vlog or better yet do a head to head comparison test: Vittoria Corsa G+ v. Conti GP 5000's. Vittoria is claiming that are the fastest tyres with the lowest rolling resitstance. I've been riding on them with two different bikes and they are amazing.

sittingbackrelaxed we mentioned Vitoria tyres. Also... independent testing puts the corsa g+ very close to the gp4000 in rolling resistance. The corsa speed is regarded as being rapid, however it is a much thinner tyre very little puncture protection.

And they would always say there he goes. I asked, does there he goes stand for The God Of Speed? So it stuck, being that i am Greek.. It was that or nuclear boss or Tuna.

If circuits can be integrated into clothing with graphene, how about wearable power meters? Less weight on the bike.

Well since graphene batteries do exist and are lighter than lithium-ion, they could be useful in electronic group sets to drop weight even further. I do think though graphene will never quite gain the widespread use like carbon fiber. Currently we still have four main frame materials (steel, aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber), so unless it’s fiscally viable to produce graphene frames, we might only see composite frames and parts.
