Why Electric cars are Rear Wheel Drive ?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Most internal combustion cars these days are Front wheel drive due to lot of advantages.
But electric cars are different with different set of challenges and advantages.
Most manufacturers choose to have Rear wheel drive layout over front wheel drive layout especially when the cars are based on "born ev platforms" (not the case for ice cars converted an ev). This video discusses in short about the reasons why most EVs are RWD and not FWD (considering there are just 2 driving wheels.

Why don't internal combustion engine cars also use rear engine rear wheel drive? It increases passenger space, reduces cost, and increase speed.

In my opinion, RWD is the best solution for ice cars because the engine provides torque only for accelerate the car. EVs motors work also as brake, and for regenerative braking is better FWD. The position of the electric motor is not that critical because it is much more compact then ICE

That animation finally explained to me why most sports cars are rwd. Never thought about the shifting weight during acceleration.

FWD makes sense because of simplicity and compactness. For example the inverter, charger, motor, transmission and differential can all be stacked in the front. And it’s easier to do the liquid cooling.

Not all EVs are RWD. Not sure I'd even say "most". In fact most of the "affordable" EVs are all FWD: Nissan LEAF, Chevy Bolt, Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona, Polestar, Mini Cooper SE, Mazda MX-30, Toyota bZ4X, etc just to name a few off the top of my head. And most of the EVs that are RWD are higher end luxury models that are also available in AWD. You see the same dichotomy in gas cars. Higher end, higher performance gas cars are also typically RWD where cheaper economy cars are typically FWD. We see the same dichotomy in EVs.

@@rohandeshpande7896 The description doesn't help explain nor negate anything I said. 1st: Many of the FWD cars I mentioned were not "ICE cars converted to electric". The Nissan LEAF was "born electric". As was the Chevy Bolt, the Polestar, the bZ4X, etc. So the text in the description does not correct this. 2nd: The text in the video itself says "all EVs". Not "most EVs that are born EV platforms". The video itself shouldn't contradict the description.

Polestar 2 is rear wheel drive, Mini Cooper SE is based on ICE platform and is using BMW i3 motor and battery (which was rear wheel drive). Kona and Niro are based on ICE platform, their newest EV cars are RWD (Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6). No words about Toyota. “Most” in this case applies to modern EV platforms such as VW MEB, Hyundai/Kia platforms and Tesla. But not Stellantis Group (maybe they still produce fwd Evs because their ICE cars share the same base). And talking about Renault/Nissan - their latest evs are also FWD, but they provide AWD too
