Why Don't We Make Cars Like This Any More??

Jack goes for a drive in an old Citroen that's really neither old, nor a Citroen. The creation of Bristol-based 2CV shop, 'Evie' is brand new electric delivery van, and a masterclass in lightweight simplicity. Could this charming van offer a valuable lesson or two to modern car makers?

NSU prinz 4! I have owned 2cv's since college, but they are just not that aero, quite high, impractical boot and bonnet space and the drivetrain configuration doesn't lend itself too much for ev conversions. I still wanted to convert my 2cv though, until I discovered the NSU: rear wheel drive with rear motor, boxy spaces in front and back, as narrow as the 2cv but lower and less draggy design choices. Still have to find the time and remaining funds though! But 100Wh/km seems achievable

I'm aware that low price usually comes with economies of scale, but you have to have a fair bit of cash to throw around for £40k to be "affordable", especially considering you only get 10kWh of battery. I'd love there to be more cars like this but they should really be in the £15k bracket for regular people to be able to use them.

I swear automakers have just lost the plot. Even 15k is a way too expensive. Cars at that price are always crappy too. We cannot afford these things anymore. I see a growing movement of anti car content all over the internet. If automakers don't provide affordable cars they will just kill themselves. Less and less young people are being born. They cannot afford cars. They have little interest in cars. In a few decades the car market might shrink dramatically

I drove an original 3CV in West Africa for five months in 1970. Everything imaginable went wrong with the car. With very few mechanics available, I had to learn how to fix it myself. I even completely dismantled the engine one morning. Top speed was about 50 mph down hill. I rolled it one morning on a muddy road in the rain. The car was so light, we just reached down and lifted back over! One day I had four flat tires simultaneously! My oh my. I loved that car!

As a student I remember getting blocked in by two cars parking too close front and back at the side of the road. We got back to the 2CV to find it had inches of space front and back, so we just lifted it out. That and my old smart cabrio were the best cars I've ever had (I say "I" - the 2CV was my dad's, he loved it as much as I did).

Even is 2023, most people do not ride more than 30mls a day, and can charge at home. But for €40k the price is way to high. In 1972, as young starters, we could afford a 2CV. I doubt that you'd be able to register it. You couldn't register it as a new car because of type approval, and you couldn't register it as an old one, because it's not. This kind of thing is possible in the UK, and was always possible because the UK had a type approval exemption for small/home builders. But they may have been legal in the UK, just not in the rest of continental Europe. And when the UK rejoins the EU, the almost certain probability is that the exemption will be lost, in just the same way as the UK's veto will not b given back. Just another example of how bloody stupid Brexit was.

@@marquisdemoo1792 "The veto had all but gone by the time we left." That's BS. It is still important. And the veto is used by those who have it, all the time. the point is not to actually use it, but the threat of being able to use it is enough to know that legislation isn't even put forward. "For the stability of the Euro the 5 Presidents Report makes it quite clear that Fiscal Union is required to stabilize the Euro and that requires central budgets. That in turn requires Political Union to agree the budget, which cannot be held to ransom by a national veto." Yet the veto exists, as do national governments. Political union doesn't preclude national governments, as seems to be your implication, just look at the USA. "If we re-join we would have the same veto rights as any other member country; " Jeez, considering you claim to understand so much of how the EU operates, you are impressively uninformed. The only veto power that new EU members have is to veto the membership of applicant countries. Of course the UK would have to agree to accept the €uro... eventually. Just as every other joining member of the Eu has to agree in principle to joining the €uro. But you can ask how all those other monetary units survive, and the answer is simple, they claim that they don't meet the requirements. Personally, I do not understand your objection to abandoning Sterling for a much, much stronger currency, but then I don't understand the UK's objection to ID cards. I live with both and see the advantages literally every day.

Cupra bourne does 200miles and is 36k and goes over 100mph. On a 55kw battery. Oh btw it's actually safe not like that Citroen. MG4 is only 26k and over 200 mile range for a very basic one. Also if you are in a city you could use a taxi every day spending £41 every trip for a year for 15k Why would you even need a car for a city with taxis, Uber, metro's, buses ect ect. You could save thousands. If you did every upgrade to that car you want to do then add another 20k at least it's just not worth it go and buy a decent new car instead.

The low volume exemption that makes it possibke to sell this specification as a new vehicle is 1000 units/ year I think. High volume production would puch it into the same regulations as a new design so would be basically impossible I imagine. As a hand built car it's not likely the manufacturer intended to find production getting that high though.

How is it practical, £40k for a vehicle that only does 50 mph and will do 60 miles. There are many EVs in this price range that have better speed better miles per charge and cost far less. Your selling an image and not a great image at best you presenters make me laugh with the bullshitery you come out with to justify an outdated design with bad specs and even worse value for money.

In the 1980s, the ADAC had several small cars, including a duck, crash into a wall at 30 km/h with a dummy as the driver. The duck crumpled at about the height of the windshield. The dummy survived, but I would not like to experience something like that live and in color as a human being.

Very nice. The cargo part of the vehicle is an exact replica of the original metal one.

I’m with you on how modern vehicles are overloaded with tech. My 2011 car, that I bought new in 2010, has buttons that I still don’t know what they’re for.

Those cars were very popular in Denmark because the price was low. The big joke was the heating system. You had two choices cold or very cold. 😊

As an aid to advertising your wares I think that £20,000 would be a good price, you certainly need a pricy product to fork out over £40,000 for one. Pity really because it's a good product and I like it.
