If someone asks you why you don't smile, tell them you're Polish. It works every time!
I am also an English teacher (currently a stay-at-home mum) and I would like to thank you for voicing feelings and opinions I didn't realise I had. Now that I am a bit older, I no longer feel like smiling all the time and creating 'fun' lessons, I want to help those who want to be helped. I have no desire to be a clown. 🙂

For me as an Eastern European your style is pretty normal. When I grew up nobody was smiling much in normal conversation (they laughed at jokes etc. but that's another thing), teachers were just like you, strict. Nowadays many younger people acquired the fake cheerfulness from Western, especially American culture though.

It does not matter if you smile or not, the most important, in my view, is your clear and useful lessons that you teach us, thank you Jade, God bless you.
I love your style. My purpose is to learn from you, I'm not bothered about anything else. After all you are a teacher not an entertainer...
Even though you don't smile, you spread positive energy around you. Stay as you are and smile whenever you feel like you want to
As a german teacher I have to agree with you in the sense that every person is different. Some people may enjoy your style better, others may prefer a more upbeat, cheerful style of lesson.
Teacher, you are just authentic. That's all. People who like your style of teaching will always follow your lessons. That what matters the most.
Hi, Jade. I've been following you since around 2014, and back then I only knew basic grammar and vocabulary, and could not understand a word of spoken English. Thanks to your videos I discovered other wonderful teachers in EngVid, and as an introvert, I very much appreciated your old videos, I just wish you had kept them at least in a separate channel, but I'm very grateful to you for helping me develop my English skills. PS: you are an amazing teacher with a beautiful smile.
@robin_birdie_

There is no need to make another separate channel. She has some playlists on her channels, they might be helpful for what you're looking for.
You can't win. Whatever you do, you will always have someone who will bring it up as a covert criticism of your character, if not a blatant one. For example, I smile a lot and laugh a lot, not every single time, I can be serious too but most of the time I am lighthearted face to face and I get some people telling me that I "get on their nerves" because of that and on those occasions when I might be serious, you can nigh on guarantee you will get one other person who will say to me "oh cheer up John for god's sake, you're depressing me".....blah blah blah. As the late Ricky Nelson used to say in his 'Garden Party' song, you can't please everyone, so you got to please yourself.

I haven't watched a video from Jade in a while and it's nice to see her again. Personally, I don't need English lessons but my wife does. Jade is one of the best teachers I've seen on KZread and I can't recommend her enough. Jade doesn't smile as much as your usual Spanish teacher, but she can be witty and has made me laugh a number of times in her videos.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way you teach and speak. You are instructive, clear, and succinct. And constantly smiling when you do not mean it does not come across as sincere.
Jade was one of the first English KZread teachers...i remember when i had a hard time understending british English...her accent was a pleasure to hear and used to gave me hope, about learning listening british english ..may be she doesnt know but her work has been a Big part of our Road on the English learning...and all for free...hope life gives her back some of the much she has given to us

You inspired me as an adult to go and learn. I took Maths and English exams. Then 2 computer courses before going on to learn Accountancy. I thank you for your time and effort towards your videos they helped.
You're doing absolutely fine, Jade. Just be your true self and keep up the brilliant work.
I totally agree with you, sometimes I have the feeling that nowadays teachers are being asked too much to motivate their students and the lessons have to be always fun. In a way that is good, however in life we also have to be serious and the students also have to do more of their part. In any case you are an excellent teacher and I love your channel
Hi Jade, your channel was one of the first learning channels I’ve found on KZread, I honestly can say that I always loved the way you teach. Practical, effective and interesting. In my opinion things were the most important, however I do remember several videos in which you did smile. I just love your teaching style.
Thank you Jade for your sincerity. I really value when people express their reasons.

Thanks a lot for your honesty. I was wondering why you did not smile, when I saw one of your videos today, so I am glad you explained it a little in this video. I think you deserve all the respect for it.

I started following your site two days ago and it's been a kind of "revelation". Most female teachers use their sex appeal to engage students and they managed to do it. “I’m a man of contradictions, I’m a man of many moods, I contain multitudes”
What an amazing coincidence! I just yesterday shared your video on how to pronounce "OFTEN" with a female American Teacher of English as a Foreign Language, and her comment was: "Honestly she put me to sleep in the morning! She shoulda bin born American so she’d smile more often!!" I found her comment degrading and revealing a basic lack of grasping your beautiful lay-out of the linguistic evolution of the pronunciation. Aannyways .... 🙃
Learning English is a serious business, and teaching English is even more serious. Jade, you are an excellent teacher just the way you teach. I am learning a lot from you and I love it. Keep up with the good work. Thanks a million.
I like your mood, your pace, teaching style, Jade...keep it up!
I’m in love with your character and way of speaking, your English language is beyond refreshing.
People ask me the same thing. Sometimes they say "Are you fine". Wtf. Why should we be smilling all the time if there is no reason to do so. Jade you are the best. When I see somone making that fake smile to take pictures it like "what???"
You are serious , knowledgeable and professional and you care about people. So smiles are not required your knowledge is. Thank you Jade.
I watch your videos because you go straight to the matter, language-wise, and also because I happen to be a stranger to British accents and I'd like to broaden my hearing skills. I am a 68 years old fellow from Santiago-Chile and not a native speaker at all. Thank you Jade..!
a lot of people here are expressing their liking for your style of teaching and i'd like to say i really agree with that! i think it's all well and good to make some effort to not look inapproachable, but on the other hand it can so often be overdone. personally i find it distracting when a teacher is too perky and seems to care more about being seen as likeable than about delivering the information effectively. it is precisely this straightforward, no-nonsense approach that i think makes your videos so accessible, so please keep it up and don't let the criticism bother you too much! thank you for your valuable work!
You are amazing, Jade. I am very happy to listen to your videos. Thank you for your great job.
Your seriousness and your tone differentiates you from typical KZreadrs, and that's the reason I subscribed to your channel :) I would love to see you and hear you the way you are ) Cheers
I recognize your intrinsic motivation and am therefore happy that you do what you do. I would like to add that I had to laugh a lot at the contradiction between the serious content of your story and those lights behind you! :-D
Thanks for the explanation. Your lessons are well made and educating. They do not need much smiling. I like, that you smiled, when you said "Bye." That shows, that there is a wellcoming person inside you. Hug to you.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts n feelings openly about your sadness, anger and lack of smiling. I hear you and emphasize with you. In addition to lack of education there is also a lack of justice, fairness n peace in the world. More power to you and may the Force be with you for what you do. I love your British accent.

@To Err is Huma I used to watch this awesome TV series from BBC, 'Life on Mars' and the main character had nightmares over this test card on the screen, as you said it was displayed at that time... You may have noticed as well that the cross is just in the middle 😅
Hi Jade, you are beautiful honest person who is passionate about her work and cares deeply for other people. Your lessons are great and interesting. Thank you for be true to yourself and with us. Love you and what you do.
First of all, I admire you for being so honest. Unfortunately, I am not able to follow your classes regularly but as far as I'm concerned you are a good teacher. For some, the teacher's smile is one of the necessities of education. But for me and many of your students, you are a teacher who seriously and responsibly tries to provide his knowledge and experiences to her students, so we students also want to see such a lovely person happy in return. I hope this situation is only related to the classroom. Thank you, dear Jade
Hi Jade! I appreciate your sincere response to this situation about your seriousness, I think it's ok you show the way you truly feel. The important thing is your dedication and commitment to the progress of your students. As regards the fact that you feel upset because of the level of education / personal background that each student has , let me tell you this, I'm also a teacher, in Argentina, and I have to teach a lot of concepts and grammar structure in Spanish first before explain to them those in English; imagine how frustrating it was when I was young, now 51, I've learned how to accept the things along the way that I cannot do, and move on slower. Bye..Miriam
Congratulations for your courage. Beautiful explanation. I wish you the best results with your work. You deserve it.

Hi teacher, First of all, give you a huge congrats on your work that I consider outstanding. As you can notice rapidly, I am an English student with a level next to intermediate and with a strong will to progress until a more advanced level. I would never have dared to make this kind of question, but I have to recognize that your answer has been amazing, I enjoyed how and what you have said it. Jade, thank you for the video, some interesting points well argued that I totally agree with. E.g. 3:33: if students expect continuous encouragement in the shape of smiling and fun, perhaps they are after things OTHER than studying.

You are an EXCELLENT TEACHER. You don’t need to smile, keep going as you are. Your style comes across as very professional. You remind me of a woman I know who grew up in Blackpool and now lives amongst the Tatler readers and “are you going beagling this weekend” fraternity. She presents a very neutral front like yourself with the very low energy quite closed mouth delivery, I’ve always said it is because she worries about her natural accent slipping out like Eliza Dooolittle at Ascot. It worked for her and seems very happy with life but inside there is a lovely person who does have a sense of humour and itnis always a joy to make her laugh. Oddly you look very like the younger her… perhaps a distant relo’. My wife is an actress so we both love the nuances of accents and so enjoy your channel.

-- You can smile when you want to, i wouldnt worry about that. You have a lovely voice and i like the accent. Your work helps me learn how to speak english and i love the phrases and style. I acquired a liking for the sound of it as a kid watching Monty Python on the TV back in the 70s-80s, Ive noted that the laugh track totally detracted from the actual humor and deliverance and i think the same applies for when people smile for no reason or have perma-grin or manic laughter etc. Just do your thing and pay no mind, you smile thru the eyes and are very expressive without posing your expressions or constantly showing teeth in a robotic, obligatory or automated manner. Pip pip, cherrio, carry on, all that rot ! :D
