Why doesn’t Ben White want to play for England?

Спорт

Arsenal’s sporting director, Edu, told The FA that Ben White does not want to be considered for the England squad.
It seems that whatever happened during the Qatar World Cup is still sensitive for the right-back.
Ayo Akinwolere is joined by Tim Spiers and Arsenal correspondent, James McNicholas, to discuss the outrage from both point of views.

Ben White knew his time was up with Southgate during the 71st minute of England vs Iran game at the world cup.Coming into the worldcup, White was confident he was ahead of Maguire in the pecking order but to his surprise Southgate went with his trusted Stones/Maguire partnership and White had to settle for a spot on the bench. However, with England leading 4-1 at the 71st minute, Southgate decided to take Maguire off, perhaps a chance for White to showcase his point but alas! it was Dier that came in for Maguire. This single substitution meant that White was not even the first choice cover for CB, a decision that did not go well with White. He obviously rates himself higher than a second choice cover CB.To me, this was the turning point for White, the 71st minute substitution of Dier for Maguire when England were leading 4-1 vs Iran.White must have been thinking, if I can't come on when we are leading 4-1 then I probably won't get a chance in the knockout rounds.

Both relevant points and taken on board. Call me a biased Arsenal fan if you want, but I think Gareth Southgate really threw Ben White under the bus in the press conference. He knows exactly why White doesn’t want to play for England right now and the roll that Steve Holland played in it (and I stress, RIGHT NOW. He tweeted that getting his first cap was a dream come true and that he loved every minute of it), but he made out that White had just left him in the lurch and in the dark, and put everything on him. Southgate could have taken the first amendment route and said something along the lines of “I’ve picked who I think the best players are from who is available to me at this time, and I will not be commenting any further on team selection”, but no. He decided to make a point, because he feels disgruntled, and frankly, I think the way Ben White has been treated by Southgate/Holland, along with sections of fans and pundits is absolutely disgraceful. This is not the military or the army. Accepting a call-up is not mandatory or compulsory. You are not disrespecting your nation, or letting your country down, or committing a dereliction of duty by rejecting a call-up, as I have heard from certain sections. If we’re looking purely on form, Kyle Walker is still probably rightly first choice, but what are your options after that? Reece James is nearly always injured, Trent Alexander-Arnold is looking more and more like a No.8 by the week, Kieran Trippier is 34 this year and nowhere near the same form that he was in during the first half of the season, and Joe Gomez is not as comfortable playing full back as he is centre back. On form, and if he was available, Ben White should absolutely be in the England squad. I’ll leave you with this: I listened to the Arsenal Vision Post Match podcast on Monday, and Tim Stillman posed a very good question: in managerial terms, Marcelo Bielsa and Mikel Arteta can be understandably looked at and defined as psychopaths and obsessive, yet both of them were able to get a tune out of Ben White. Why can’t Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland? Maybe they’re not the man managers that they think they are.

Southgate took him to Qatar as an extra, he’s been one of Englands best defenders and is an ultra professional in everything he does. We’re talking about a guy playing at the top who can cover across the backline and in midfield. Can invert, overlap and has even started underlapping. He has worked under super detailed, super demanding managers. Southgate and the England setup dropped the ball and we’ve seen signs of this with how often he’s picked players who are bang out of form to the detriment of others

Spot on, didn’t Southgate basically lie in the press conference? And why did he choose to do it on the day Ben receives his new contract? • @jameshall9654

@@Cafez27 the whole Steve Holland thing is murky, I think technically he didn’t lie because either A) It’s not just about any disagreement with Steve Holland and that’s just a contributing factor B) Arsenal/Ben haven’t fully revealed all the motivations behind why he doesn’t want to play It’s a tough one - I think like James said, Arsenal announced the contract to coincide with Southgate discussing selection. The fact that Edu has spoken to John McDermott suggested to me that there was some unofficial discussions around potentially selecting Ben for the long list. Arsenal have communicated in an official manner and England have responded in kind I agree though - Southgate has fucked this one up and where he fucks up the most ironically is with player integration which was one of his positives. It wasn’t so bad when we weren’t blessed with options, but now we are he’s struggled. If he was relying on favourites to execute a complex football ideology you could perhaps understand it. But I often feel it’s actually simple pragmatism that creates the dilemmas. We should be exploring what a midfield 3 of Rice, Bellingham and Foden looks like but we all know we’ll see Henderson next to Rice because he’s too pragmatic. Another manager would be looking defenders comfortable to step in next to Rice and England to play on the front foot. But he won’t

@@jameshall9654 hi there I agree with nearly all of this…. The Steve Holland thing isn’t murky in my mind we have the piece by Daniel Taylor and Jack Pitt-Brooke at the at the Athletic and highly credible source. They categorically report there was a row with Steve Holland in front of teammates. Southgate has denied their isn’t an issue between Ben and Steve, when there clearly is, as it was likely a contributing factor Ben leaving the WC as well as not featuring when lesser favourites were getting starts. Southgate has been disingenuous. I’m unsurprised the main stream media have gone for Ben rather than Gareth who is a truly awful coach. Thanks goodness for the new media!

Southgate keeps inviting Ben White only to keep him on the bench to Watch Harry Maguire who rarely plays for United . but you want him to leave his family to go on a tourism tour just because he is meant to be patriotic. Ben While in the last 2-3 seasons have been arguably the best RB ( all round Ability and Availability wise) who can also play at CB but guess what, he should be patriotic and just keep showing up to sit on the bench. However, I am sorta DREADING the tournament. Because I think Southgate is going to make stupid decisions and squander the talent and not get the most out of them. That really is a shame. Selection, tactics, subs in crucial moments, setup, chemistry - most people think he gets it wrong. He’s had the easiest runs in tournaments and that’s the only thing that has meant England has done well recently. They have, in fact, underperformed. For me itjust adds to my feeling that no England manager should be in post for as long as Southgate has been, he's about 2 or 3 years past his use by date at this point. Inevitably managers have their favourite players, those who they see as fitting in with their system and who they get on with. Over time other players realise it doesn't matter what they do they're not going to play and lose motivation, at club level they can agitate a move or not sign a new contract, at internatoinal level they have the choice not to turn up. If the favourites are genuinely the best and playing well then the back up's can probably live with it, not many strikers over the last x-years will have thought they genuinely deserved to play over Harry Kane. But if the favourites are clearly failing and out of form or not even playing for their club then that's going to de-motivate the squad players. Changing manager means that the back ups have more motivation, the new coach may play a different system and want something else from their players and just have a different personality, which can all mean a better chance of playing and a period to impress. In the end though there are always good players who don't end up playing as much as they possilby should for their international teams for whatever reason, be it the manager, sytle of play, or having generational tallent ahead of them in their position, and Ben White may well end up as one of them.

If we abolished those useless international friendlies mid-season this conversation would be redundant. It is an intense time for the league and the champions league, while this conversation is a distraction from the football that actually matters!

I have 2 thoughts on club v country. I think if the national scene wants to grow, they need to stop with the bitty matches. I cant get invested when they only play 2 matches every 3 months. If they counted up how many weeks the prem goes on hiatus, then finished the league that many weeks early, and had the internationals play then, people would engage more. Secondly, taking an extreme example. If Mbapepe went to Madrid for 200 mill and was on 500k a week, adding up to half a billion pound countract and did his ACL on international duty. How long till the clubs sue the international, for loss of player meaning they have to buy cover? I wonder if countries wont even be able to afford playing these players eventually

Ben White is exposing Southgate for his bias and favouritism on certain players that we know are always chosen and play whether they're in form or not

Fact is, white isn't good enough to break into that England defence, he's a back up at best, there are many many more better players we can take, we don't want cry babies in the squad, glad he's staying home will be better for him. As for throwing white under the bus, Southgate has done no such thing he has simply answered the questions put to him, it's upto Ben himself to come out and tell the truth.

I don't think there is a direct disparity between being an international coach and club coach. They're two very different skill sets that can't be correlated fully. Capello and Erikson were incredibly decorated club coaches that didn't cut it, as it's more about communications and creating a culture with international football, as Southgate has proven. Hes basically the politician, while steve Holland is the tactician.

If walker breaks his metatarsal Ben White will be 3 more injuries away from playing for England. (Reece,Trent,Trippier) are all ahead of him according to Southgate, blanco won't be regretting not warming the bench, in this case I'll let him do as he please

Agree with some points here but I disagree with the part where James says international football has been surpassed by club football for prestige. Agree with the quality aspect but you only have to look at the coverage Messi winning the WC got in comparison to all his other achievements. Look back at any all time great and the defining thing we remember them for is what they did in an international shirt. Whether it is Pele's exploits at the WC, Maradona's goals against England and Belgium before the iconic image of him hoisting the JR in the air. R9 and Ronaldinho in 02 and Messi lifting the trophy in the bisht last year. If Mbappe was to go on and win the CL for Paris or when he inevitably does it for Madrid, he will still be remembered mostly for his hattrick in the WC final and for kissing the trophy in 2018 after being the youngest final scorer since Pele. International football has been surpassed in terms of quality, but for prestige and legacy it will always be king.
