Why Does The Qantas Kangaroo London-Sydney Route Stop In Singapore?

Ойын-сауық

Qantas' flagship QF1/QF2 Sydney - London - Sydney flights normally make a pitstop in Singapore. While most passengers don't mind the opportunity to stretch their legs, Qantas doesn't stop in Singapore for passenger comfort reasons. While aircraft range is the obvious factor, let’s look a little deeper into this particular service…

Qantas has used Hong Kong, Bangkok and Dubai for kangaroo route flights before. Dubai because of a codeshare agreement with Emirates, which replaced the Singapore stop for 5 years. They used to operate 4 Australia-London flights, 2 from Melbourne (via Hong Kong and Singapore), 2 from Sydney (via Bangkok and Singapore). They were slowly reduced to just those via Singapore between 2012 and 2016.

But Dubai has never had that sort of an attraction with Australians as Singapore’s had. It’s a more convenient way to fly if your onward destination from Dubai is a Middle Eastern country, and it’s more convenient if your onward destination is a European county, as most European destinations Emirates flies to are within a 5.5-6hr flight time. But Australians love doing a stop over for 2-3 days in a country that’s Timezone is not too dissimilar to Australia’s meaning You don’t really lose time due to jet lag.

Australians probably likes Singapore because Singapore Changi is a mere two hours flight between Phuket, or other popular south East Asian destinations like Vietnam and Jetstar Asia ( owned by Qantas) has a good air hub base in Singapore, flying between Singapore and these popular beaches.

I used to fly LHR to Sydney once a year on QF1/2, back in the days of Bangkok stopovers though. I would usually spend a week or so in Thailand and take myself to one of their beaches/islands (on the way back to London). Something worth mentioning - going via Singapore allows passengers on QF1/2 to connect to/from Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, as well as continuing through to Sydney. It is also a well-timed stop - coming in before you want to sleep.

Back in the mid 80,s we flew on a QF 747 via Bahrain to London. On approach to Bahrain the Captain warned that due to a malfunctioning screen wiper if we hit a rain storm we might have to go around . We landed okay and as we were sitting in the terminal in transit we were looking out through floor to ceiling glass at our aircraft when up pops a cherry picker with a pilot in it, he manoeuvred over to the cockpit and signalled for the captain to flick a switch and then produced a broom and pushed the screen wiper. It started working so he gave the thumbs up sign and went back down again . Thankfully this high tech problem solver enabled us to continued on to London safely !

I flew back to Melbourne via Singapore right at the end of the London Olympics. Another Qantas flight flew in for Europe bound for Sydney, and there was some interchange of passengers. So Sally Pearson & her gold medal in hurdles changed in transit for the Qantas Sydney flight. The old Northwest Airlines had an extreme version. 5 flights from Seattle, San Francisco etc. would all land in Tokyo at about the same time. They would go onward to Seoul, Hong Hong and other Asian destinations. This was when the US still had post-war control of Japanese air rights. Those 5 flights would swap passengers. So Singapore has served as a passenger swapping point.

The reason for choosing Singapore is Qantas is obsessed with the place. It's a nice stopover city, but there is already (during normal times) a huge over supply of flights between Australia and Singapore on numerous carriers. It would make more sense to offer more services via Bangkok, Hong Kong and perhaps even Kuala Lumpur. Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are under served from Australia, particularly from cities other than Sydney and Melbourne. Anyone who wants to visit Singapore or use it as a base for onward travel flies Singapore Airlines anyway, especially as Qantas is now able to fly to London (and soon other European cities) non-stop from Australia (from Perth/Darwin and in the future from Sydney/Melbourne as well).

That makes little sense with so many flights from Denpasar/Bali direct to Australia. Backtracking through Singapore is a huge waste of time. In fact, some services such as Virgin Australia's Denpasar-Port Hedland flight is only a short 90 minute hop away, shorter than Bali-Singapore! Additionally, the only international flight ever offered out of Port Hedland is this one to Bali, mainly to serve miners/FIFO workers going on R&R. Indirectly, it also functions as a minor transit stop for FIFO workers heading to other Asian destinations such as Thailand, Singapore, Jakarta, Hong Kong, Tokyo etc. who can save time flying via Bali as opposed to flying down to Perth first.

London to Sydney twice but with Singapore airlines so you can guess where they stopped. Londond to Perth twice with Thia so you can guess where they stopped. Never just a few hours in a transit lounge, a 2 or 3 night stop to explore Singapore and Bangkok. Hong Kong and KL on the way back, same story, 2 or 3 nights to explore the cities. Looking forward to the London-Perth non-stop once the pandemic is over and Aus properly opens their borders.

I flew on the London to Sydney via Bangkok route years ago back in 2010 on a B744 and it was a very welcome 2 hours worth of stretching the legs and refreshing when we stopped. It would’ve been tough to go straight through I think although having made the Dubai to Auckland flight with Emirates on the A380 which was just over 16hrs, I was surprised how comfortable it was as the A380 has a quite spacious cabin. I’m sure when the time comes, with Qantas’ research into passenger comfort/wellbeing for this length of flight and there is a specially modified aircraft for it, this non-stop service will be successful

Ah yes…..but for those of us who have the good fortune to not live in Melbourne or Sydney, (In my case Brisbane), we get the option of flying to Singapore on a separate QF flight , usually an A330, which arrives in time to allow a couple of hours wait for the plane from Melbourne or Sydney. Singapore offers an excellent in airport hotel which you can book for blocks of hours and have a shower or bath or swim, before boarding the onward flight. This is 100% more agreeable than the usual hour or so mingling with the masses in (the always hot) Changi airport. This “arrangement” is way more pleasant than the one single through flight, forget flight time, it’s comfort that matters.

Once the onboard experience gets comfortable enough, like sleeper trains of old, then the distance becomes less and less important. The combination of Sydney curfews and Dubai timezones makes Dubai a horrible option for interrupting sleep and jet lag, even for the shortest of stopovers. Whereas Singapore never has that sleep interruption effect, it does have an incredibly annoying element of requiring an entire security check even if walking out and back into the same gate. This alone is enough reason to desire non-stop. It might be a hard sell in Economy, but in Business or First (with true flat beds) it's really the preferred option. Get on, get comfy, and get off at your destination.

One of the reasons Qantas uses SIN as the stop for QF1/2 might also be the fact that Jetstar Asia, the Asian arm of the Jetstar group, is based here. It allows for Qantas passengers to connect seamlessly to shuttle flights to smaller leisure destinations

Another reason is QANTAS and BA used it as a hub to and from the smaller cities. I used to fly PER-SIN on an A330 then change to the 747-400 later A380 that originated in Sydney. The Adelaide A330 and a Jetstar A320 from Darwin, as a QF codeshare, coordinated with the Melbourne to London service. It gave the airline the chance to keep the load factor high by replacing the passengers departing at Singapore and circumvented the lack of rights to sell SIN-LHR (QF) or SIN-SYD (BA). I think they did a similar arrangement at BKK using Brisbane passengers as I flew out of Brisbane and had two hours at Bangkok before a QF 747-400 to LHR and the return was codeshared with BA on a 777 with 2.5 hours at BKK before a QF A330 to Brisbane. Again I think both airlines had no rights to issue tickets originating in Thailand unless it was to their home country.

Qantas has done London-Sydney nonstop twice. They were both delivery flights. The first 747-400, which topped up fuel on the runway before departing to the point of overflowing the tanks and only had the flight crew on board, and a 787-9 running a "test flight" for Project Sunrise. That had around 30 people on board.

There was a time when the Kangaroo route was more like a milk run than a super one-stop hop-on, hop-off event. I've flown Australia/Heathrow by a number of routes, visiting 9or flying over) some weird and wonderful countries. Flying the route at one time or the other with Qantas and BA I've landed in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, New Delhi, Beirut, Tel Aviv, Frankfurt Main, and finally - London Heathrow. Memorable events? * Sitting on a Taxiway in Beirut while Syrian and Israeli warplanes fought it out overhead, and perimeter AA guns were tracking some of the planes (dunno which ones). * Landing in Tel Aviv just after the Lod Massacre, out on the tarmac, while a truck brought out a set of air stairs, accompanied by a Jeep (or similar) with a pintle mounted machine gun. We were boarded by Israeli soldiers who stood in the doorways with sub-machine guns loaded and cocked (I had the middle door seat so could see exactly what was going on - I was about 3 feet from the open bolt of the gun, with a view into the magazine! - our squaddie was a Sergeant). The military were followed by apparent civilians, complete with trench coats(!), and while all this was happening, we were told that if we had any bags that weren't in overhead lockers, be ready to be searched by Israeli security. The whole affair ended happily, with the half dozen departing pax being ushered down the airstairs, and searched by the military might deployed around the plane before they all went off like great buddies. * Flying relatively close to Mount Everest (it was in the distance) with a 3rd engine hanging from the wing of our 747 - going out to rescue the England cricket team that was stranded in India (That must have been BA) * flying into Hong Kong (for the first time ever - for me) in a raging tropical storm, and seeing all these buildings just off the end of the wing as we swung round over the bay, then coming lower, and lower, and lower, until we (finally) touched down on the runway.

Very often travelled on the other kangaroo route, QF9 and QF10, Melbourne/London. However, if your final destination is not London, as is my case, the rise of the gulf airlines has greatly reduced the attractiveness of this route. I now fly Qatar which regularly gets me to a final destination in Europe in well under 24 hours with one stop in the gulf. The relief of avoiding LHR and a short hop on BA makes the trip almost enjoyable now (not to mention lower fares and greater comfort in economy.) Singapore Changi also served as a hub for Qantas: flights from all the major Australian cities would converge at around the same time with passengers transferring to the long-haul sectors on 747s or 380s, a mad scramble. Not so much now with Perth serving as the stop for QF9/10.

You forgot to mention the Sydney Perth London flights which the Sydney Darwin London flights replaced and the 787 permitted. I was surprised that the obvious reason for Singapore wasn't mentioned; it's a hub airport for One World Airlines, so flying via Singapore makes sense to fill seats with people who aren't flying the full Sydney to London distance. Sadly I've never flown Qantas to London. A few years ago, I flew Qantas to Singapore then Malaysia to KL and London. The Qantas leg was an A330.

The Perth flights don't go from Sydney, QF9/10 is Melbourne-Perth-London, though currently via Darwin due to the WA border being closed. The Sydney-Singapore-London, QF1/2, is currently going via Darwin due to the transit testing requirements at Singapore. Singapore isn't a oneworld hub. Singapore Airlines is in Star Alliance. The oneworld Asian hubs are Tokyo, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

@@magical_catgirl interesting. I knew that the London flights were via Darwin due to WA covid restrictions but didn't know that they originated in Melbourne. Nevertheless you could fly Sydney to Perth (or Darwin) and change to the London flight. Singapore Airlines may not be in One World but many One World airlines fly into Singapore. Singapore is a hub airport and that's all I meant.

@@theharper1 Only half of oneworlds members fly to Singapore, and other then Qantas and BA (which also flies to a Qantas hub), those members only fly to their own home bases. Those flights also aren't well timed for connecting between members like they would be at a hub. Notwithstanding the pandemic, flying to the UK/Europe from Sydney is better done far less frequently (every 3 or so years) to enable time to save extra money for a business class seat.
