Why does my kick drum make a clicking sound? | FSB #4
From the Sounding Board - the video series where I answer viewer questions on the channel!
In this episode: a viewer keeps hearing a click through his kick drum mic channel, but when he listens to the drum with just his ears the click disappears. What's going on?

"You'd never listen with your head inside the piano. That'd be a terrible way to experience a concert." LMAO Thanks for the joke of the day!

You're welcome Joe, people often forget this when dealing with live sound sources.

Super important lesson! Thank you! This year I had to figure out the "why" of close micing (guitar amps and everything, just as you mention, to understand how to mix it) and start hearing that metal kick drums are actually just "clicks". I guess the bass guitar and the low tuned metal guitars playing tightly with the kit, are creating the perception of "kick drum" beat, while the actual kick is way up in the mid-range.

Nice video. I do enjoy boosting the click of the kick for certain types of kick, sounds nice in my opinion :-)

Thanks Guy. Boosting the click of the kick definitely clicks with certain client cliques :P

Welcome to the channel Doro!
Great explanation! I'm familiar with changing my beaters to adjust my sound but had never considered how the mic angle could be affecting it. Thanks!

Thank for your excellent video! any advice on getting rid of pedal sounds and keyboard keys while recording a piano with a blue yeti or shure mv? (does pop filter may help or they are mainly for voice ), thank you in advance!

Thanks for watching! I would experiment with mic position - use a directional polar pattern and aim the mic away from the source of the noise. Having said that some pedal sounds are normal when recording acoustic piano, as are the mechanical sounds of the keys, hammers, dampers etc. Of course if you have squeaks or rattles those should be fixed before recording 😄
In live setup, will I output the kick drum and bass guitar on my midhigh(house) speakers?? Or I will only output the bass guitar and kick drum on my subwoofer???

It refers to the ability of the amplifier to control the movement of the speaker cone - higher is better but in practice the determining factor is not the amplifier but the length and gauge of the speaker cable connecting the amplifier to the loudspeaker.
