Why does God work through Covenants?

In this first episode of Mountains & Mediators, Dr. John Bergsma defines what a covenant is and explains its significance regarding our relationship with God. Throughout Salvation History, God has made various covenants with humanity that are divided up between the Old and New Covenants. Dr. Bergsma explains that the Old Covenants were temporary and have been fulfilled and completed through the New and eternal Covenant established by Christ.
The intention of these covenants is to help reconcile man back to God, who we view as a Father. This belief is unique as no other world religion shares this same belief of God.

Thank you so much for the excellent video. How I wish this material had been taught to me 45 years ago during the Lutheran college and seminary days. It would definitely have changed the course of my life. Thank you again for your efforts. Pax

The horrible sound of the dial up on computers & the way the computer would say I’d made a “fatal error” when I was just wanting it to do the job it was invented to do.

Interesting lecture. One question. What if we are God's children by nature and only left the family (Prodigal Son) when we rejected God's fatherhood in the Garden (original sin) and covenant is like the father of the prodigal son, a kinship already and eternally there to be accepted? I think this understanding is in accord with the Franciscan tradition that kept me Catholic even in the darkest of nights of my soul. We did not change our nature, but God offered us kinship, fatherhood, and we reject that reality fighting against our own nature.

God made an eternal covenant also with the people of Israel. It was not a temporary covenant.

Christ came and established new covenants. He also fulfilled the old and taught the errors of the Jews in interpreting his fathers prophets message. So course correction is required to listen to what God himself taught through the person of Jesus. And historically Jews who lost their way were cut off by God. Especially when they were overly stubborn to his teachings

You should Thank our Lord for the Protestants. I wonder if you know what they protested about. I am shocked at the ignorance of some of our very narrow minded RC community. Please wake up. I grew up without any knowledge of Scripture as the whole Mass was in Latin. And, the Priests always was with his back to us. Yes, ignorance of Scripture is certainly ignorance of Christ. We owe a debt of love to Martin Luther, and others who challenged us to meeting the Lord through His written Word to the Very Incarnate Word of God.

Reading and Meditating on the Gospel of John and starting from Genesis to Revelations, there is no turning back on our Lord of Creation. We do not own Him He Owns us. That is why, we are told, " you for not belong to your self, but you belong to the Lord, as he has redeemed you with the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ " which, With the Blood He Shed Once, and for all. And it is not to sit with smugness to be critical of other but to serve mankind, as the Body of Christ. And we need to be discipled by Christ and not be RC as a label. With the Gaza episode we ourselves are crucified Christ. Remember Saul now Paul was asked by Jesus Christ, " Saul, Saul why are you crucified Me" Hagar chased away by Sarah, was ministered to by our Lord by nourishing her son Ishmael with water. On two occasions. And the tragedy, we have killed and maimed in the Name of our Lord, instead of reaching out with Love and Reconciliation to our neighbour.

@@shriyanidemel9401 how ironic your words are to those who really understand scripture. That you do not see the contradiction of protestants to the gospel is the very crux of the issue You are right about one thing, it’s belonging to him. But most importantly doing it God’s way and not your own way. You don’t get to pick and choose. Jesus laid it all out along with the covenants and he started one church, the one the apostles continued to build in Acts … an actual physical church.
