Where does the expression "the dog days of summer" come from? In this episode of Bible Basics, Dr. Bergsma explains the history of this common phrase, the roots of "ordinary time," the reason there are so many Marys in the New Testament, and the special connection between the month of July and the Gospel of John. In Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich's visions, they are two different persons. There is quite a lot said about them. Of course, the visions are not at all infallible teachings.

I have always heard Mary was such a popular name in the Bible as Moses’ sister was Miriam and she was held dear by all Jews.

That's an old joke but an easy way to remember the difference between those two sects of Judaism. I count seven Mary's: 1) Mary mother of Jesus; 2) Mary wife of Clopas; 3) Mary magdalene; 4) Mary of Bethany; 5) Mary mother of James and Joses; 6) Mary mother of John Mark; 7) Mary of Rome (Rm. 16:6).

How do you explain to an eight year old that the Bible contains truths and facts and that Jesus is not make- believe, which he's being told by a lot of kids.

Hi Leon! I think that your example in their life and how you live and speak of Jesus can influence how they understand Him. If you live a life that shows and speaks of Jesus in a way in which it shows that you believe Him to be real, then kids will pick that up. As they grow up, you can further catechize them about Christ and the Bible. I also encourage you to listen to the episode of our podcast series, Drawing Flame, on the Eucharistic Pilgrimage with Kris Frank. I think they provide a lot of helpful suggestions for teaching kids about the faith around the one hour mark. Hope this helps!

very disappointed about why the name Miriam was so popular. I thought it was because of Moses wife.
