I have been criticized by other teachers for teaching my secondary students about city ecosystems and putting the pigeon in there... The illusion that a human made structure can not be a 'natural' habitat is not very scientific. All of nature has been influenced by animals and plants, humans are just another animal to do such. They most definitely are not. While wild rats do tend to live in unsanitary places, that is merely a human caused problem and a human concept. To them, it is just home. The same with pigeons, which I would argue are probably cleanlier than the sewage rats. To add to that, the rodents and birds which we keep as pets are very cleanly and very good company, definitely not disgusting.

I love pigeons honestly. Recently i've noticed that pigeons all have different personalities. It's really incredible. It's more than just "some are scared and some aren't". You can see them think and change their mind among weird personality quirks. Physically they're also very different. From how screwed up their feet are, to how well kept their feathers are (of how unbelievably disheveled), how many toes they're missing, list goes on! Also, they're just beautiful. Even the common pigeon that's in every city, the green/purple around their necks is stunning. When they're in the sunlight they shine like jewels.

Obviously live near the cliffs. I went and hand fed them and each time they decided to stay as a pet and I would pet them and hand feed them every day. I have one rat 🐀 still alive in the next room, poor little thing has been alone for a while because the other’s didn’t have such good genes (probably the breeder was in-breeding). His health isn’t good anymore but he would always enjoy sitting on my chest and looking into my eyes and then closing his eyes with pleasure as I massaged his face, head, and behind his ears.

City/sewer rats transmit diseases. They are loathed for good reason. I know rats are smart and social but pet rats are basically a different species. Pigeons are dirty and often miss a toe or an entire foot. They often have dirty feathers so they don't seem to care too much about taking a bath. So yeah flying rats seems to be a fitting lable for these birds.

As a birdwatcher focusing on behaviors, I love the pigeon because they're so prevalent. My focus on urban pigeons focuses on foot damage, as many entrapments,by design or accidental, I have seen 20% or more in a feeding group have anything from a missing toe,to a non-existent foot. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and pigeons are all around some of the best flyers in the bird kingdom.

I’ve noticed this anecdotally too. When we recently visited Venice the pigeons in Venice proper wear what I’m used to in Philadelphia: lots of missing toes and sometimes whole feet. Occasionally you’d see one with a bit of plastic or string wrapped around their foot. In Murano, the pigeons were much healthier looking and were mostly intact. They were also all doing a lot of mating dances compared to the Venice pigeons just a short distance away.

I really like pidgeons since I was a kid, as I love animals and pidgeons are the ones closest to me most of the time. A week back I had a magical encounter with a pidgeon that wasn't scared of me at all even. It came back and even dared to go to sleep 2 meter next to me. I gave it some bread and kept company. Haven't seen him back since but I hope he will one day return and hang out a bit with me again.

Pigeons and doves are the only birds that could live on the space station. Most birds drink by scooping up water in their beaks and letting it flow down their throats by gravity, something that would not work in space. Pigeons and doves drink by sucking up water and actively swallowing it like we do.

Even after the egg didn't hatch, they kept returning! We even got pigeon feed at some point to feed them. After a lot of attempts, they successfully hatched an egg, and we named the baby "Waffles". Waffles grew up, and the couple kept trying and trying, until they hatched another, egg, and we named that new baby "Cheese"! They're both grown up now and all of the pigeons still come back(a few new ones have also arrived too). Pigeons are wonderful animals, and are so different from the "rats with wings" label people put on them. They're an underrated animal and deserve much more love

Pigeon fun fact, one of my favorites: the most expensive bird in the world is a racing pigeon, the highest priced racing pigeon was recorded to sell for 1.9 million dollars. They look IDENTICAL to rock doves, they just fly really fast basically. They’re entered into races over six hundred miles long, and only about ten percent of the birds are ever seen again. Also, go look up colorful pigeons and doves, they’re amazing!! Two of my favorites are pink-necked green pigeons and crested pigeons, but even the rock doves you see in the city can be just as stunning with their colorful necks and lovely mottled feathers.

There were quite a few pigeons just casually strolling about, occasionally getting chased by young kids. The station has several fast food places and there was a pigeon walking around inside the McDonald's there. None of the pigeons looked particularly distressed or anything and would walk right up to people, between their feet when they were sitting and such. They didn't give a coo about the large amount of people there. I love them, they were the highlight of my trip.

Back in the 90s I split an apartment with a coworker and he found a pigeon dying by the sewer. We took care of it for a few weeks and he got better. He had a copper band on his leg and was told he was a racer. I don't know about that, but I used to walk around the neighborhood with him on my shoulder when I was drinking beer. My roommate wanted to get rid of him and dropped him off a few places like the park where he was found. He managed to find his way home every time and just stayed for hours on the back porch. I kept letting him back in but he did eventually leave and I never saw him again. It was a cool experience to have my little friend for a while. I wished I could have kept him.

Pigeons actually have flat feet unlike most other birds. They actually prefer foraging on the ground because that’s what is most comfortable for them! That’s also why they prefer cities, their flat feet are meant for nesting on cliffs and sky scrapers are a great way to mimic that! It also takes a lot of energy for them to fly.

Back then they didn't think of them like that, pigeons (I prefer feral rock dove or city dove, more accurate, biologically all pigeons are doves, not all doves are pigeons...) were loved ever since we domesticated them in neolithic times (yep we've been buds with them for that long) until surprisingly recently. Pigeon hate didn't really begin until the 1930's and only really started big in the 60's. The flying rat term comes from a song and later a movie. A lot of the commonly regurgitated bullshit about pigeons (like them spreading disease) can be traced to, I think it was a park owner, or an urban architect and a deliberate effort to change the public opinion on pigeons so they could, you know, start to get rid of them. Loved/appreciated for thousands of years, suddenly hated within a few decades, because human be fickle like that. The generic overarching reason is, we started living more and more in dense cities. The way buildings evolved makes living with humans even more appealing to pigeons aside from our already standing mutually beneficial relationship, they all stem from rock doves, they nest on rocky cliffs.. What's a tall concrete building from their perspective? And we build those cliffs in close proximity of each other and litter the ground with food. We built the perfect pigeon home. Things like the fact pigeons poop everywhere they perch (they can't when they fly, so whenever a poop hits you from mid air, it wasn't a pigeon .) became more obvious, add marketing, bullshit claims, presto.. (obviously oversimplified but I don't want to write a thesis lol. ) We used to appreciate them a lot. That's why they are still used as symbols of love and peace. "White doves" are actually a white breed of pigeon not a different species of dove... (PS don't release white doves on weddings, most of them will die, they are tame and have no clue what to do after release and have 0 survival skills. Might as well sacrificially kill them on the altar, it's quicker, less cruel...) Pigeons are amazing, intelligent, emotional, make great pets. My carrier pigeon thinks I'm her mate lol. (She was a rescued feral squab, damaged legs and malformed foot. Gave her a forever home and boy I so do not regret it. I love her to bits.) kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZuKrMupnJmemcY.html Lol sorry wall o text..

I found a baby pigeon in a river... it felt from the nest. I forced feed him for a few days, then he started to eat by itself. The first day I brought my pigeon, now looking like an adult, outside and allowed it to fly... I was hoping it would explore a little then come back to land on my shoulder. The pigeon made a large circle then decided to land on the roof of a commercial building. I climbed the firefighter escape ladder, approached slowly and he just stayed there, allowing me to bring him back home. I presume he got scared from his first flight and ould not decide neither to fly back toward me, neither to fly away when I came back. It is very hard to guess the emotional state of birds. They don't express their emotion as clearly as mammals do. Guessing the mood of tyranosaur was probably as hard. What, you want to eat me? Bad dinosaur!
