Yes, they're so cute. In German they're called "little pigeon tail" (Taubenschwänzchen). When I saw one for the first time I thought it was a hummingbird that somehow got to Germany, but the lack of a beak gave it away.

They’re so amazing! I’m from Scotland and when I went to Madrid on my gap year, seeing one was the shock of my life. I was freaking out running through the field back to the river screaming “THERE ARE HUMMINGBIRDS!! HOW?! THEY’RE FROM THE AMERICAS!” And my friends were laughing at me when I showed it. “Mi querida mariposa, es una polilla”. “My butterfly, it’s a moth”. (Mariposa is Spanish word for gay but we were friends and I didn’t mind them saying it cause I thought it was cute, since it meant butterfly).

I love pigeons, especially rock doves or feral pigeons or flying rats. The ones at the park know me because they always greet me when I go there. I don't feed them all the time as feeding wild animals is a bad idea, but I do put out nesting materials and boxes for the birds there. Since I take lunch with me to the park the pigeons naturally linger around me, and over time, they seem to sit closer to me. I've even held them before! They're really smart and misunderstood.

@@wormlunch I'm pretty sure the crowned pigeons can fly, but they do spend most of their time on the ground, much like a wild turkey. And all four of the crowned pigeon species are significantly larger than the Nicobar (off the top of my head, I think they range from about 4-7 lbs., with about 10 lbs. being possible for the largest Victoria crowned pigeons).

@rasmusn.e.m1064
2 жыл бұрын
@@wormlunch Aaaah, ok. I guess that would kind of make sense because the prototypical "bird" for most people is flighted, so they don't really think flightless birds are "true birds". Would that be correct? I just don't usually think about that because I have been a big animal nerd since childhood, so I always knew about penguins and dinosaurs and all that. It's the same thing when I hear people being in doubt as to whether whales and shellfish are true fish. It baffles me. Though I guess whales are technically fish if you wanna be real cladistic about it.
Pigeons don’t get enough love, people who think that they’re pests don’t realize that pigeons are actually domestic animals that’s why there are so many different colorful breeds that have been bred to look pretty/do a job, just like dogs. Rats and raccoons are wild animals that have adapted to city life (which doesn’t meant they don’t deserve love too) but pigeons are stray domestic animals just like cats and dogs. Some pigeons were even awarded medals of honor for serving in the military (look it up). Yeah dude carrier pigeons.
I mourn for the the Dodo. Literally an animal we will never know but some of our ancestors briefly did. I wish there was a hope of at least bringing them back. I don't think that there is.
