I'm not staring at myself in video calls. I look at the other person, and sometimes I make the effort to look at the front facing camera (not the screen) as it's more pleasant to look at somebody who's looking at you in the eyes.

I agree if it's in-person. The thing is, digitally, if both are doing your method, then neither of you ever see the eye contact.
