Why Do So Few English Footballers Go Abroad?

Спорт

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, England were the only national team without a single player who played their club football overseas.
That has changed a little since then, due to the likes of Kieran Trippier in La Liga and Jadon Sancho in the Bundesliga, but by and large, English - and indeed British - football / soccer players are not particularly keen travellers, and on the rare occasions in which they do venture overseas, they often struggle.
So in today's video, HITC Sevens takes a look at some of the reasons why that might be the case, and whether it is likely to change anytime soon.

As a London-born person with non-English parents, I can hazard a guess at some of the stipulating factors to do with this (although, I do feel its not as bad as it was a decade or so back). I think being an Island nation brings both historic and physical isolation to the continent at large. Add into that both the English school system with foreign languages isn't great, coupled with the fact English is easier to learn than say, French, you start to see a number of things form a much larger collective. I think this language comfort factor combined with the differences in the UK to Europe at large in food, culture, etc do combine to leave the average footballer a little intimidated maybe by foreign living - This is coming from a person who's lived in China on his own for the year 2013 - you had little option other than get involved, or you'd fade away. I also was in the position aged 7 - 18 to be sent bi-annually on my own to stay with my Swedish side of the family , I was only able to communicate with my Grandparents in their tongue (as they didn't speak English). So maybe I had previous experience with this "othering" that the English (in particular) seem to be fixated on (at times to focus on differences rather than interests) that - that Europe is different and foreign. There are exceptions - From the Auld Alliance to now quite a few English players abroad (Smalling's still at Roma, right?), especially in Italy - what I think we'll see is in the next few generations will be more willing to leave the UK, plus the fact (in London at least) I see more families that have parents of different nationalities. Anyway, that was an essay. Maybe I'll become the HITC Sevens comment essay writer :)

I’d say there’s two main reason why England do so poorly at international level. One is because when we have had great talent, such as the 02 to 06 squad, we’ve not had the manager to bond the squad and assert enough discipline to be successful. And the other is the fact that there are that many good foreign players in the premier league that young English talent is often over looked instead of being given a chance at the highest level, like they are in Germany for example.

Hi Alfie, First of all, keep the good work. Secondly, and my main point, you brushed on it slightly, but it is interesting to see how maybe Wales is the exception. Some of Wales' best players have played abroad: John Charles (Juventus and Roma), Gareth Bale (Real Madrid), Aaron Ramsey (Juventus), Dean Sounders (Galatasaray and Benfica (where he played with another Welshman, Mark Pembridge)), Ian Rush (Juventus), Mark Hughes (Barcelona and Bayern), Trevor Ford (PSV) and Terry Yorath (Vancouver). In all, out of 21 male players in the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame, 7 played abroad, and that's not even counting Bale and Ramsey. Most of these transfers came when the players were in or around the peak of their careers. Are Welsh playes then more likely to play abroad? Even lesser known players, such as Nick Deacy (PSV, Beringen and Vitesse) had their best careers abroad. Of the current lot you have playes like James Lawrence who has done all of his pro careers abroad, Robbie Burton at Dynamo Zagreb or Rabi Matondo who is still contracted to Schalke 04. Matt Smith and Ethan Ampadu have both been loaned out abroad to Twente and RB Leipzig. Of the 2016 Euros squad, Simon Church (Roda) and David Vaughan (Real Sociedad) tried their luck abroad at some point of their careers. Joe Ledley now plays in Australia with Newcastle Jets and Roberth Earnshaw played in the MLS with Toronto, Chicafo Fire and Vancouver, but also in Israel with Macabbi Tel Aviv. As managers go, there is also a large number of Welsh managers abroad, something even rarer than footballers when it comes to the UK as a whole. John Toshak was far more succesfull abroad than in the UK. Chrism Coleman has managed in Spain, China and Cyprus. A younger generation of Welsh coaches and managers are learning the trade abroad: Carl Robinson with Vancouver and now Western Sydney (he also played for Toronto and NYRB), Craig Bellamy with Anderlecht's coaching team, Osian Roberts leaving Wales' assistant manager role to be Technical Director for Morocco, Anthony Pulis as Inter Miami's assistant and Adam Owen who has been assistant in Switzerland, Poland and China before taking his current role as Technical Advisor at Seattle. Although he has never managed abroad, Nathan Jones of Luton Town and Stoke City fame played in Spain for Badajoz and Numancia. Even in the 60s to 80s, Barry Hughes did all his playing and coaching career in the Netherlands. Maybe there is something that sets Wales apart from England, if not the UK as a whole?

Part of the reason none of the 2018 team was abroad was due to the fact English FA forces clubs to develop domestic players and this was before Brexit. But a lot of English players once they leave the academy (usually after being released without being offered a professional contract but other reasons do exist) do go abroad to the United States for college and rarely come back unless its for a big money move to the Premier League. Some of the notable examples include Dom Dywer (since played for the USMNT) but the MLS and USL Championship rosters are stacked with players of English nationality that went to college in the USA. Sometimes they go to USA for high school and then college like Jack Harriston (because in the USA its possible to play on a club youth soccer team on a student visa because almost all of those youth clubs are classified as amateur). Some of them see the MLS Superdraft as another pathway for a professional contract after they failed to gain one at an English Club.

Commenting at 10.41 so youj may address this later. I used to be a tutor in an intensive cross-culture training centre based in the East End of London for mainly Europeans intending to live and work as aid & development workers in two-thirds world countries. A significant factor is the Cultural Adjustment Cycle which was first identified among American navy personnel on American bases in the Pacific - which were pretty much isolated islands of Americana. Some people go to another country and almost immediately 'go native' and reject their home backgrounds and the agencies that sent them. This is not necessarily a good and healthy thing in the long term but, if they make the split completely, it's functional. The opposite end of the spectrum are those who simply can't adjust - they imediately dislike all foods, won't try anything and view everyone they meet and everything they might be asked to do as a threat. They crack up, have to go home quickly, often with a sense of failure that they blame on everyone who took them wherever they went. There are two in-between types. One sort of copes and do a decent enough job - maybe start quite well but go downhill slowly steadily from there and never recover to cope well. The other group may not start well, may have a few ups and downs but, with self-awareness, openness to input from others, they steadily begin to do OK, then to do well drawing on the riches of their own background and enhancing it with every increasing appreciation of the people and places where they have gone. I suggest that the backgrounds of most of the British footballers is one that doesn't equip them for thriving personally in the cultural adjustment cycle. In the CAC model, language learning is not as important as attitude not east because language learning so as to speak it rather than pass a written exam is as much an attitude issue as anything - being prepared to look silly and try things out and make mistakes and laugh. People who did great at languages in school may be disasters in the CAC and, vice versa, non-academics can learn languages in the real world very quickly. It has been interesting to follow the careers of some young English footballers who moved to play in continental Europe in the last few years - they have done well and have no problem with languages - and they went to really good schools in England and their parents moved to England from other countries so they have a global perspective from the start. Having taken my son to football in East London in the 1990s, it was very clear that the vast majority of other parents regarded school as a bad thing (possibly because they had a bad experience of it themselves) and saw education and football as opposites whereas children from immigrant families tend to view education at school as a good thing as well as playing football. Associated with that discomfort with school, was a narrow vocabularly, low reasoning ability, and inability to express themselves in any other way than football and violence or the threat of violence. It is no accident that the typical English footballer deeply distrusted team mates who read broadsheet newspapers and books. There was a famous example at Spurs - Ossie Ardiles was a qualified lawyer as well as a world cup winning footballer when he came to Spurs and did the Times crossword to develop his command of English. An English teammate described his only reading as being a few pages of the match programme - and he wasn't joking. There are parallels in other sports. Cycling is a very good example of the long history of a few British cyclists going to continental Europe to try to be professional racing cyclists. It was an extremely lonely and tough existence but a few, such as Barry Hoban, thrived on it while others just about coped or crashed out psychology very quickly. Today, English has become the dominant language in world cycle racing so it is much easier for native English speakers (monolingusts) to thrive in the peloton without having to learn more that some basic phrases in other languages.

The existing players in the club make accommodation for these foreign players until they learn the language. That makes a huge impact in how well a foreign player fits with a club, how welcomed other players make them feel. Edit: Most foreign born players do NOT speak English upon arrival in the English game, or not well. They LEARN English over the course of their contracts with the help of their English teammates.

Another Welshman who had a successful career at Juventus, John Charles, was also omitted. These omissions I suspect are due to your young age and lack of a fully rounded knowledge including what a picture of a 1940s schoolboy looked like as the child with the abacus is much more likely to have been a late 50s or early 60s pupil.

I want to add something to the portuguese example as a portuguese myself. We are really good at adapting to other cultures and languages. English is a MANDATORY discipline in pretty much every school in the country, meaning that pretty much everyone (except maybe the older people) knows a second language. Usually english, but its not rare to see schools teaching Spanish or French. German and Italian are a bit more rare but it also exist. These last 3 are optional, but do exist while English, again, is MANDATORY in nearly every school in Portugal. So, a portuguese player, even if he doesnt go to college, even with only the 12th grade completed... he knows english

Back in the 80s & 90s there were a few British footballers who went to ply their skills on the continent. Off the top of my head I can remember players such as Gary Lineker, Mark Hughes, Ray Wilkins, Alan Macinally, Tony Woodcock, Glenn Hoddle, Mark Hateley, Steve Archibald, Graeme Souness, Ian Rush, Chris Waddle (I think), plus the likes of David Beckham, Michael Owen, Steve Macmanaman in the 2000s. Granted, it's not a huge number in the grand scheme of things but there were pioneers who travelled abroad to play their football. I think the reason that not many players have moved abroad in recent years is down to the obscene wages footballers now get paid. Other than clubs like Barcelona & Real Madrid, I can't imagine many other clubs can pay wages approaching up to a quarter of a million quid a WEEK that some players get paid 😳

There was a period in which following the Heysel stadium disaster in 1985 and subsequent ban of English clubs in Europe that made a lot of English players seek their fortune abroad; the likes of Ray Wilkins (PSG), Gary Lineker (Barcelona) and Glenn Hoddle (Monaco) to name a few. Around that period you also had the likes of Mark Hately at AC Milan/Monaco.

Jose Mourinho has the best answer for that in a conversation with Harry Kane. He said internationally English footballers are respect and their level is high, but the Ronaldos or other exports are always the superstar. The hollywood types in football. Very good analogy. English players dont go abroad because of 2 things. 1 their styles is more suited to the PL, strong and aggressive. 2 they aint gonna get favoritism abroad and walk into teams. Mason Mount being a great example. Wouldn't get a sniff at Juve or Madrid or name it. Being at home allows anyone to be overpriced and over rated. Going abroad means you'd want to be very special to achieve half the results. Brazilians, Argentinians and anyone from a less rich country, they'd know their whole lives they'd be moving abroad and adapting because there simply aint enough money at home. So they are ready mentally from a young age. In short this side of the world its too comfortable for players so they'll never be that hungry or that good. If you learn football kicking a beaten up old ball cause you can afford nothing else, you master that, kicking a great conditioned ball probably feels a treat. Its not that complicated. Its psychological.

As non english country I will say main reason is prolly that Premier League is like considered as best league in the world and yeah payments are high there, so if players move from any country they usually seek stronger league to play or stronger club and from your perspective it's pretty impossible to find, you can move like max to stronger club like only few in europe might fit in this category ;)

I'm not a footballer, so this is not a decision I'd ever have to make, but I've always thought that if I had the choice, I'd rather push for a move to somewhere interesting like Monaco, Malaga or Roma than rocking up at Stoke or Burnley. No offence to Stoke or Burnley, but if you had an opportunity to live and work in Rome or Monaco for a couple of years, even if you were earning less money than you could in Stoke, wouldn't you want to?? It would certainly be an interesting life experience!
