WHY DO SHEEP TRY TO STEAL LAMBS THAT AREN'T THEIRS? (DAY 15): Vlog 277

Just when I thought it was going to be a slow day...
4 ewes all went into labour within the first hour of my arrival!
The first 2 were in the process of when lamb confusion begins... They were likely going to steal lambs if I hadn't separated them first...
A few ewes I had to assist, but for the most part, today the ewes did a fabulous job of lambing solo.
Got to the end of the day and had a couple lambs who I just couldn't get on to the ewe's udder for a drink. Super frustrating when mom is patient, and full of milk.

You CAN'T help too much if they are in active labor. Those who say that have no idea about how this works! Each ewe and lamb is valuable. Not helping results in the large financial loss as well as emotional. You do what works for you and your operation!!!

Sandi isn't going for the record as the most naturel breeder. She's running a business where every loss and win counts. Learning the hard way it's better to err on the side of caution than lose a lamb or a ewe.

I think it’s an interesting observation about all of us out here watching Sandi working with her flock and almost all our comments are kind and supportive. Sandi has the ability to show real frustration and disappointment and minutes later, she’s showing us that huge smile, literally beaming with happiness. This “real ness” is what keeps us watching, she’s not acting or playing for her camera, she’s allowing us inside to see this very difficult world of new life and sadly, sometimes death. I hope she never changes!

Always love when we put creep feeders up. The first lamb that figures out how to get to the grain. They pop thru the gate, turn around look like "oh wow how did I do that". But they are the ones that show everybody else how to do this. You aren't helping too much either. We help when needed but our motto is 'unsure then watch, wait 5minutes, then help.'

Sandi…don’t let anyone tell you you’re helping your sheep too much. Anyone who has worked with animals knows sometimes they need help & it is a matter of life & death, for both babies & mamas. I grew up on a farm with all types of animals & we humans do our best to help them as much as we can. Side note…I am a mama who had big troubles during labor & delivery myself. Without help (my doctor told me) neither my baby or I would have survived. You know your flock & you know what’s best for them. We armchair shepherds out here in cyberspace don’t know…as we’re not there in person. Keep up the great work❣️🐑🐑🐑

You are fine, your girls appreciate the help. Anyone who is critical has never seen how bad it gets when trouble happens. I'll name a few 2 at once, head only, head back, lamb backward (bum), big lamb, big shoulders, dry lamb, to long lambing, tied ewe, lamb drowning, one left inside. Actually not a whole lot different to any other species, including human birth. So better early than late. Your mortality rate ie live lamb's is AAA+.

Trying to get a stubborn lamb to nurse off mom is VERY frustrating. You pick them up, put them right under mom, even guide their mouth to the teat and they turn around and go looking for milk elsewhere. Or they try to drink off your boot or sweatshirt hood ties. It makes it harder too when the lamb is tall or the ewe's bag is low and they have to learn to go down on their knees to nurse. Once they figure it out though, it's quite satisfying to watch their little tails wagging and hear the slurping sounds.

You should not let the complainers tell you what and how to run your farming. Do what you enjoy and how you enjoy doing it! You are doing a great job and I enjoy your videos so much.

You’re doing what works. It really bothers me when others are so quick to criticize as if their way is the only way. If you disagree with something, ask respectfully so you can learn that maybe you have been doing something wrong all along.

Hi Sandi! Good video as always. There's something really special about the new life in your barn. As to the naysayers who say you help too much, please ignore them. I've seen your lamb death numbers hit you hard between the eyes. If helping the ewes helps you keep your lambs alive, then do it. Take good care of yourself!

I think you are AMAZING and your compassion for the Ewes when Lambing is what keeps me coming back to your channel. I just wish we could see the full births here as I don’t have Instagram. Trust your instincts and don’t let people shame you into not helping...it could be a matter of life or death! Regards from Dublin ☘️☘️☘️🇮🇪☘️☘️☘️

Sandi, you’re the expert. Your gut feelings and intuition are a million times better than your observers. Lots of times, there’s no right or wrong. Better helping than losing a baby or a mom.

Don't ever apologize for assisting a ewe. You have very healthy, perfect big babies because you do such a good job of preparing your ewes. Even though you are tired at the end of the night I firmly believe the topping of the colostrum saves lives. Five hours till morning when the weather is cold just might be too much for some of those little darlings. Your mortality rates are down. I think that your extra efforts sometime make a mortal difference. You rock!

Hi again SANDI ALWAYS better safe then sorry!!!!! You need to live by that if for no other reason because this is your business! I highly doubt this is but a hobby and you're working this hard for the fun of it right!?! For those saying you interfere too much I wouldn't be so affected by those comments because it's not their bottom line!!!! Also Sandi you need to be remembering all the lambs you have saved by helping that would have died otherwise!!!! Easy for those to make such comments not understanding all that is involved and under consideration... I always believed and accepted the fact that breeding/raising sheep is labor intensive if you want to have a successful and profitable business. Every time you do something to help something along you are likely to increase that. The milk machine Is the perfect example. How many lambs would you lose without that help especially noticeable financially. Plz hold onto the confidence in yourself and your decisions that you've achieved. Don't allow the negative feedback you get affect you so personally. Only you can decide if something is constructive criticism or not... Thx as always for sharing. You're doing great!
