    Also, In addition to the bigger injury risk talked about in the video, I would also mention here, that pros have Football Boot contracts and ergo don't care about the increased wear and tear on their FG boots, simply because they can switch them after every game. As a regular, who spends money to buy boots, I would strongly recommend from a durability standpoint to avoid playing with FG boots on artificial grounds, as they will destroy your boots much faster...

    I suffered a level 3 lateral meniscus damage wearing FG boots on the new turf, reason being when I turned the knee joint twisted very awkwardly because the boots stuck too firmly in the artificial grass. It took me 1 year and half to rehab, now I finally can be back onto the pitch playing, but I'll wear AG boots this time...

    i think the main difference today is the durability of AG shoes over the FG. But Pros can afford more than one pair of shoes over the season. But for a sunday-league player like me, the best option is AG sole plates so the boots can last longer. hope my oppinion helped.

    Great video Matt! I had been wondering about this myself. As some people have pointed out though, I would like to mention the new Nike AG studs (available on the Tiempo VI and VII and the latest Hypervenom, for instance), which are a lot like an FG soleplate, but designed for this new artificial type of grass - best of both worlds.

    This depends on the grass and how deteroriated it is. Here in italy there are a lot of artificial sinthetic ground and i actually use ag for my training because my pitch is 10 years old and grass is very low but i always take ag and fg to away matches...if the pitch is done by sand and rocks or natural grass i use fg ans if it is artificial i use ag because the most of artificial ground pitches have already 2 years of use and are deteroriated

    For amateurs I think one thing to consider before choosing your cleat type is that if you dont play frequently as possible or you dont train as much the likelihood with injury using FG boots on this turf is higher especially the pressure it puts on your knees and maybe ankles. So if youre the kind of person who just goes on the pitch once a week or averaging around there you should consider this.

    Great video as always! I’ve noticed Nike changing their AG soleplate to have longer studs and more of a FG type pattern than before. Is that in response to the newer turf surfaces in your opinion?

    I think you forgot one other important point; pros are playing on very nice AG fields. In theory AG fields are supposed to mimic a nice natural grass field and therefore FG boots shouldn’t seem out of place on an AG surface, but AG fields wear down after time. After several years of heavy use AG fields get worn down to the point where the blades are really short and the surface is really hard making them look and feel like an astroturf surface. In the league I play one of artificial grass fields is so worn down that wearing TF boots wouldn’t be a bad idea and wearing FG boots could be very dangerous. That’s why I believe that if you’re not playing on a nice brand new AG field you should really invest in some AG boots.

  • @gmolina
    @gmolina6 жыл бұрын

    Matt, this is a terrible idea. AG boots must be worn by everyone playing on AG fields. Just because pros do it, doesn't mean they know better. You can't fight the laws of physics. Just because you can wear FG, doesn't mean you should. Proper AG boots have shorter and more flexible studs, soleplate is a bit stiffer to handle the harder surface reducing stud pressure, and all of these things provide proper movement when changing direction, pivoting on your foot, specially when striking the ball. Besides, you wanna be lower on the ground anyways. FG boots on AG fields are too clingy, high off the ground and extremely unsafe. Which is actually detrimental in performance because you're adding stress to your joints, which actually has long term repercussions. It can cause random injuries and tears out of nowhere. Moreover, If your foot is planted and your leg is hit, the boot won't let go of the grass and you'll break something, because it's not extra traction, it's clingy. Specially the bladed stud pattern, that's not even remotely safe. I lost count of how many ACL injuries I've seen in person where the player hurt himself without even being touched by the opponent. Honestly, as a former high performance soccer player (scouted for U21 National Team) that chose school instead of going pro, if you want to extend your career and avoid unnecessary random shit happen to you, use AG boots. I cringe and pray for you every single time I see you wearing FG on AG fields. With all due respect, I love your channel but you need to let go of that reckless juvenile attitude when it comes to your boots. Specially now that you went through such a hard time recovering from an injury. I believe this is not the first time I have given you the advice of wearing proper boots, hopefully you'll read this now. Your boots are a tool and you are a professional. Use the right tool for the job. You'll never see an electrician using a wrench to solder a wire.

    Gerardo Molina so are you saying that you, a person who chose school over football a few years ago, know more than the pros? 😂😂😂 they know what they are doing mate, and the positives outweigh the negatives in this case

  • @gmolina

    @gmolina

    6 жыл бұрын

    Joe G Dude, we're talking about boots and not decision making. Boots are a tool. Science and common sense trumps whatever pros think it's right. Players are creatures of habit and many are superstitious and stubborn as hell, that's why I made a reference to my soccer background, because I understand the environment and mentality. It's like brushing your teeth with a sponge just because you can.

  • @joeg4768

    @joeg4768

    6 жыл бұрын

    Gerardo Molina but pros don't just use their common sense? They listen to coaches and sport scientists and listen to what would improve their game, they really do think about things like that, they are paid to play football, they wouldn't just do whatever. And like I said, the positives outweigh the negatives

  • @gmolina

    @gmolina

    6 жыл бұрын

    Joe G Honestly, there's a broad spectrum on how pros would use their common sense. Even I was stubborn when it came to boots, I've always preferred leather boots but they're actually really bad when it rains, they get heavy and get softer, making you prone to roll your ankle, but it didn't matter for me since I just liked leather boots. It didn't make me right, just stubborn. Same as pros like FG boots on AG, they don't care if they rip their entire knee off the leg for that extra 0.00001 seconds on a sprint, that might actually be placebo since the extra grip feeling is actually because they're clingy. I'm not alone in this, in fact it's an issue being brought up very often when it comes to safety. Silly risks won't make your career, just break it. Coaches are focused on actual teamwork and the staff is mostly worried about keeping your body healthy from a performance point of view. Even their education background might ignore AG, since major soccer leagues around the world don't even consider AG, so they build the program without that knowledge. In reality, there are no positives to FG boots on AG fields, just a whole lot of risk. If pros think they're getting advantage for that theoretical 0.0001 seconds, they might need to rethink how to play the game. I guess North America (and sometimes England) has that mentality problem where running fast is more important than running right, like anyone could be faster than the ball.

    FG outsoles with bladed studs are foolish on any surface with 'grass' blades *which don't actually tear out of the ground!* Depth and softness of the field turf is beside the point. If the 'grass' can't tear free, then as you pivot and twist a planted foot, any bladed studs on an outsole will continue to grip the 'grass' with increasing tension the further you pivot. This leads to the potential for a situation during intense activity in which your body twists one way, but your leg stays stuck for just long enough to weaken, strain, or tear ligaments. That some pros continue to wear FG on AG doesn't refute the point, it just highlights that many pros are immature young men that are foolishly overconfident in the durability and resilience of their ligaments and joints. Until they shred an ankle or knee. Then suddenly they learn, the hard way. And I don't buy at all that the increased risk of injury is effectively 'only slightly more.' Bull. Crap. The harder you train and play, the _more_ you train and play, the more those ligaments are being strained. It's an attritional effect. Then one day your ligament tears from a seemingly normal movement, and you think you just got unlucky. No.

    I wear the Nike Mercurial Vapor XI on turf all the time and I haven't had an issue with my studs overly gripping the artificial grass. I actually find myself slipping more than staying grounded to the AG surface when I take sharp-cuts. However, I always knew that wearing FG boots on AG would damage them more quickly compare to a natural surface (grass). For example, they get badly scuffed from the black material that goes into the turf and the studs become more smooth due to shaving from the AG surface. My Cactus Green Vapor XIs are hideous now lol! After watching a couple of videos about this topic, I'm going to invest in some AGs (serious af after reading the injury scares / tragedies)!!! I'm deadass about it too because my buddy's cousin who played w/ us 2 weeks ago nearly tore his ACL playing in the Nike Mercurial Vapor X and that silo of boot is known to have an aggressive stud pattern. Like I said, I never had an issue playing in AG w/ FG but I did roll my ankle bad while playing on FG which kind of confuses me too. Btw, I'm still recovering from the muscle aches / soreness.

    A lot of guys wear Trusox or similar adhesive socks, especially professionals. I used to take the cut sleeves from my team socks and sew them on top of my Trusox. Worked like a charm, looked good, and I didn't need to use sock tape. The only downside is that it makes it very difficult to reuse your Trusox after the season, so maybe just using sock tape is a better option for a lot of players.

    I partially tore my ACL while using AG on turf. Anything can happen, although I was younger and had less experience. I still buy AG shoes but i slip a lot more. AG is meant to make you slip more often rather than to grip and risk injuries. Then you have those flat turf shoes that will almost always make you slip. They offer almost no grip. I had bought a pair and kept slipping on and on. I have 10 years of every week playing indoors and outdoors. I am now rocking FG shoes. Like Matt sais, more risk but much better performance. Surely, one day i might get injured, but i won't hold my skill back by buying a safer AG shoe.

    Good info, I occasionally play soccer and all I have is FG boots, copa mondial, predator 18.1, vapor 11, tiempo legend7, and more... More than I will ever need but I was thinking of buying at least a pair of AG boots which adidas’s new sole plates are claimed to be FG, AG compatible but I think I will back off now since it won’t make that much difference.. Thanks Matt!

    Despite what the video says, I feel like the extra traction is not worth it with the FG boots. AG boots on AG makes it safer for you and other players on the field. Plus, with AG boots, you will have better control of the ball since the base shape is more flat without large studs. More incentive to do tricks

    The extra traction is not worth it because it results in injury. actually that last comment is a very good point. if you are a midfield player that does dragbacks, pullbacks and sometimes driblles foot on top of ball like in futsal, they you want to have a flatter surface. if youre a fullback/winger who pushes the ball to one side and them bombs down the wing, it matters less.

    hi - i play on a 3g pitch with small black rubber balls on the surface. I always/currently buy the bog standard astro turf boots, currently the adidas astro turfs. Yet no matter what pair i buy, i always have foot fatigue from 30-40mins into a game, due to the black rubber balls coming into the boot making it very uncomfortable to play in, also always causing painful blisters in the process. also i've recently bought special sports socks to help prevent blisters and also Scholl's Gel Activ inner sole and even tried the talcom powder to help with friction, but to no avail! and i found the inner sole actually made playing in quite dangerous. Any advice is greatly appreciated, sick of the black rubber balls coming in my boots its so painful and end up playing rubbish because of it...btw I end up spending around £25-£40 on a pair of boots, is this the problem? do i need to spend much more for better sealing?!?

    I highly recommend a pair of AG cleats if you regularly play on turf fields. Like Matt I never thought twice about wearing FG on turf fields and then I fractured my ankle because my studs got caught in the turf. It’s not worth the risk for extra traction and wear/tear on your cleats.

    In my experience, I used FG boots on the 3G/turf pitches and felt the studs were too long and i would lose my footing a lot when changing direction. This resulted in breaking fingers and a twisted ankle on two separate occasions. Since switching to AG, I have found changes in direction to be more comfortable and the traction to be ideal, without the sliding out that would happen with the FG boots.
