    I was floored when I decided to check my furnace filter with a Geiger counter a year or 2 ago. I got readings hundreds of times above background. After about 24 hours the furnace filter was back to normal background again. I live in northern Illinois and a map of radon gas distribution shows that area is among the highest in the country for radon.

    Wow that’s kinda scary when you think about it. My little sister died of cancer. It started out being lung cancer but they said it wasn’t from smoking (yes she had been a smoker but I think had quit) they got rid of the cancer in her lung but it had already gone to her brain. One night she feel down the stairs we think she got dizzy or something from the brain cancer. She was in a lot of pain and wasn’t herself. She died after 2 days in the hospital and she never woke up after the fall. She was only 52. It makes me wonder if she had radon in her house. I think you did a good thing by making this particular video. I reminder when they had found radon was a thing in houses and a lot of people were getting theirs checked and that there were areas where there was a lot of it in the ground, but I never hear anymore if it’s even checked before a house is built now. I’d hope so since we know about it now. Love all your videos! I learn a lot. I always loved science in school. If you aren’t a teacher you sure should be!

    Federico Greiff I wish that I could give your comment a million “thumbs-ups”! One of my friends went back to teaching chemistry at a public high school after working as a chemist in a testing facility for many years, and she tried her best to make the lessons fun/interesting for her students by keeping the class as interactive as possible. She ended up leaving after a few years. The current structure of our public education system isn’t set up for providing our future adults with lasting knowledge. It is designed to help the children learn how to take tests. My son is currently a high school junior, and he tells me there is very little interaction from his teachers other than assignments being given. If it weren’t for his love of band and applied music classes, I would have taken him out of public school years ago.

As shown in the video, only large fresh concentrations of this stuff is harmful. As long as proper venting and proper procedures are carried out, Nothing bad will happen. Although radiation is something to be worries about so caution is never negative.

    Radon gas is actually pretty heavy. Which is why radon systems are only installed in basements along with a sump system to pull the gas out of the ground before it gets into the house. I imagine the guy who had big issues with radon in the water probably has uranium ore nearby. When working new construction plumbing, we are required to install a radon system if the house has a basement. But a radon pump needs not be installed until radon levels are proven to be an issue. Which happen when we finish the house. Slab houses with no basement have no issue with radon. But uranium ore being nearby where I live isn't an issue.

    The decay chain half-life’s varies from seconds to minutes to years (22 years for one of them) it depends on which decay product in the chain. Most of them are not good to breath in. If you have any radon at all, you probably also have ALL of the decay products. The health question it how much.

    Performed the experiment in my own bathtub. Got dust on the tissues worth 0.8 uSv/h with a SBT-11 alpha tube, which is dropping rapidly. Down to 0.4 after 20 minutes. I live on the 5th floor. I already thoroughly scanned the apartment and found next to nothing of radiological interest. The beta and gamma only M4011 tube only read about 0.3 uSv/h. 70 minutes later I'm picking up 0.25 uSv/h and I'm guessing it's gonna settle around twice background after the only main products left are lead- bismuth- and polonium-210. About 3 hours in it's hardly at 50% above background.

    I have to point out that the Geiger counter in the video cost 3x more than a simple, dedicated home radon detector. If you do find high radon levels after getting a lab test done, it's generally cheaper long term and less annoying to monitor your home yourself than it is to mail test kits every time you change anything in your mitigation strategy.

    Well Alpha particles are positively charged, beta particles are negatively charged, andgamma radiation is electrically neutral . ... Because they consist of charged particles, alpha and beta radiation can also be deflected by magnetic fields . Just as with electric fields, gamma radiation is not deflected by magnetic fields. But, Metal foams are capable of shielding X-rays, gamma rays, neutron radiation. Research shows lightweight composite metal foams are effective at blocking X-rays, gamma rays and neutron radiation, and are capable of absorbing the energy of high impact collisions.

    Been wanting to test for this specifically. This looks like a fun way to test. But unless you already got a geiger counter, the actual test kit is cheaper (and of course as you mentioned more accurate for safety). Tho I still wanna get a geiger counter one day anyway.

    Radon also comes from Thorium. There are 4 types of radiation, he left out neutron. His friend's house probably had such high levels because of the stone floors and not just (or primarily) from the well water. If you have granite countertops or floors except exceptionally high radon levels. And despite what the Radon Measuring and Remediation companies want you to believe, Radon is not that dangerous. In fact, a study by Professor Cohen showed LOWER lung cancer rates in Pennsylvania counties with HIGHER radon levels. The opposite of what you would expect if radon was causing lung cancer.

    How will you get rid of the radon if its is high in your house?

  • @Willam_J

    @Willam_J

    4 жыл бұрын

    saurabh jainth - You need to have a Radon mitigation system installed. They’re actually not that expensive. When we were purchasing our current house, we had it tested for Radon. It was over the limit, so we had a system installed. Basically, they just drill a hole into your concrete floor. Then, they insert a pipe, which is connected to a blower, which vents the Radon outside. It keeps the air, under the concrete, at a negative pressure, in respect to your home. Basically, in more simple terms, it just sucks the Radon from beneath your house and safely vents it outside. Now, keep in mind, that if you’re buying a house, the seller isn’t legally required to test it, or pay for the test. If they refuse to pay for it, or let you pay for it, you can always walk away. However, it’s becoming more and more common, so its usually not an issue. If it’s tested and high levels are found, they also don’t have to pay for a mitigation system. However, if you don’t buy house, they now have to list the results in the home disclosure, which can work against them, when other potential buyers see it. In our case, the seller was very easy to work with and also paid for everything. However, this is *only* if you need one. You should have your house tested, first, before getting too worried about it. Radon levels vary, widely, in different areas of the country/world. The test consists of closing all of the windows and placing tamper strips on them, to prevent ‘cheating’ the test. (In my case, I was having the test done *before* buying the house. The seller would have an incentive to cheat the test, so that they wouldn’t need to have a Radon system installed, in order to sell the house.) Then, they place a device which sucks air through a filter, slowly, for about 24 or 48 hours. During the testing period, you should limit how many times you open your doors and not leave anything open, to get the most accurate results. (They’ll explain all of that, when you have it done.) Then, they collect the equipment, remove the tamper strips and take the filter back to the office, to obtain the readings. Then, you’ll get a written report, letting you know what the levels are and what to do about them. The whole process only takes about 3 or 4 days and doesn’t cost that much. After a Radon mitigation system is installed (provided that your house needs one) another air test has to be performed, to make sure that the system is working correctly, effectively removing the Radon. Luckily, testing for it and getting rid of it, are easy and (relatively) inexpensive. It’s not a DIY project, though. The testing company, and mitigation company, both have to be certified and licensed. After that, you just need to check the pressure differential gauge, on the system, a few times per year, to make sure that it’s still running properly. It wouldn’t hurt to have the air re-tested, every five years, just for peace of mind, and right before you sell your house. If you have any other questions, or need clarification, please ask. (Disclaimer: I don’t perform the testing, or install the systems, and I’m not selling anything. I’ve been through the process, and asked a lot of questions, while it was being done.) 😃

    Proximity to uranium deposits and homes with basements/underground floors. Myself and my family have been involved in real estate in Phoenix, AZ, USA since the early '80s, dealt with many thousands of homes, and we've only even heard of homes here having high levels of radon maybe twice ever and it's always basement homes. Presumably due to more earth surface area contact, and especially gravity since radon is much heavier than air and thus more likely to accumulate in lower floors. We don't have very many basement homes here, probably why radon testing isn't anywhere near as common here as it was 10 or 20+ years ago.

    This is not in my mind something to really worry about, although I could be wrong. The reason for this is only high concentrations of this dust particle can spike the radiation counter and old dust looses the radiation as a result of decay. As long as normal procedures are carried out. People will stay safe. I really liked this video though.

    The other danger of breathing radon is that the daughter atoms are metals. They get stuck in your body eventually turning into stable lead isotopes. You inhale the gas and become unable to exhale the fission products. Also, you wouldn't happen to have granite countertops in the kitchen, would you? 😃 Those are pretty radioactive themselves.
