Why do Engine Oil Specifications Exist?

Ғылым және технология

Engine oil specifications are everywhere. API, ILSAC, JASO, ACEA, on top of all those pesky manufacturer specs. But why do they exist? Who is pulling the strings?

Please discuss engine oil volatility aka NOACK engine oil volatility-why it is so important? and why it is not published on the bottle? Thank you

Very interesing, it would be kind of funny to have porsche become the specification adopted by other premium manufacturers :)

u have no video about specific oil value so i hope u can answer me a question: If the naock value of one oil is for example 8.1 and another 9.5 what is the real value in terms of oil evaporation?

Depends entirely on the application and how hot your oil is getting. On a non turbo daily driver that never sees high oil temps, not much. Lots of engines use less than ideal quality 0W20 oil with relatively high NOACK evaporation losses and barely use any oil between oil changes. When your oil is getting hot from towing heavy, racing, driving aggressively in hot climates, etc, the NOACK volatility becomes much more important since evaporation loss increases exponentially with temperature. On direct injected engines, this becomes more important since vaporized oil getting into the intake through the PCV valve can contribute to the intake valves getting dirty.

It should be illegal for a manufacturer to label an oil a certain class if it does not actually meet that. Makes labelling pointless.

Yeah I wonder about that. I figure a standards body could take an oil manufacturer to court over it but would/can they? I assume the same thing with OEMs and their spec “approvals”. If a manufacturer falsely claims an OEM “approval” they’re open to legal action.

Please do a video on API rating, specifically SP rating for turbo LSPI danger.

Can you comment on Diesel oil that meets JASO MA vs special motorcycle oil? Shell Rotella T6 5w40 synthetic marketed for diesel seems cheaper than 10w40 semi-synthetic marketed for motorcycles.

Hi, I got into friendly discussion on FB. Somebody was stating that very often Porsche 944 will burn less oil if I use 15W50 instead of 5W50(same brand and line of oil), it doesn't make any sense to me why cold cranking viscocity would change anything in that matter. Do you have any ideas?

It's possible that a 15w50 oil uses less viscosity index improvers to achieve a 50 viscosity at 100C, therefore it would theoretically be less prone to shearing, and because the molecules in the base oil are heavier, it would also be more resistant to evaporation.

@@IR-xy3ij I agree, that's exactly why I avoid oils with wide viscosity spreads like 5W50 or 0W40. While oils with a wide viscosity range are generally a good thing and are required in some circumstances, their disadvantages should be understood too.

For me , the bottom line is the best oil available to make my engine last as long as possible.

What do LV mean on engine oil? 0w30 vs 0w30 LV. Same numbers but what do the LV ( low viscosity I guess it stands for ) but the numbers are the same. How can it then be lower vicsosity?

Another video talking about pollutants and emissions while showing a picture of water vapour escaping cooling towers. False visuals cast complete doubt on the rest of the video content 😬😳 which is rather unfortunate.

True! I used to think this all the time - but then I tried searching for free stock footage of actual pollutants and it's surprisingly difficult to find. I just cross my fingers and hope people either don't care, or are happy to see coal station = pollutants somewhere in the process.
