CORRECTION: drift cars also run a high caster angle, which is the measure of how far the steering axis is laid back towards the rear of the car. As the steering wheel is turned in a given direction, the effective camber will increase or decrease depending on the wheel in question. The static negative camber given to the front wheels is lost on the outside tire while countersteering during a drift. Savvy? (The principle discussed in the video applies to cars set up for grip. I run negative 3 on the front of my track miata)

Hating stance is not hating negative camber
When I was younger I always thought camber was goofy, but as I got into stock cars, and drag, ive grown to appreciate tastefully done camber even on show cars. NASCAR helped with that specifically because they use positive camber on their left fronts on the ovals, and its a bizarre sight on the more aggressive examples

Actually, it is to compensate for the wrong-way wheel tilt caused by the steering axis inclination angle on drift car's high steering angles.

Absolutely! We don't think a short can encompass ALL the reasons drift cars run camber, but we could have done a better job touches on that as well! We did a short on angle kits as well, feel free to take a look and let us know your thoughts!

Yeah pretty much. It increases grip while the wheels are turning by giving a higher contact patch, especially since drift cars have so much steering angle
Thats why the wheels in the front of drift cars have negative camber which really makes sense

Castor also plays a part in the geometry when setting up camber, also Ackerman angle is important, too

I appreciate the reasoning, but the cool thing about camber gain is that it's not actually a direct function of the load/force the tire is generating. It's actually caused by the reaction of weight transfer because of those cornering forces. Which in turn causes the car to roll over the roll axis/instance axis that is transcribed the particular suspension design of the vehicle/corner of the vehicle. It's actually possible to have a car that produces 0 camber gain in roll, with the trade off being huge camber gains in heave, another mode of vehicle motion. Just one of the many many interesting trade off decisions in kinematics/suspension design.❤ Love the channel, make more vehicle dynamics related content please!

Rear wheels of a drift car usually have positive camber.
Drift cars run the huge camber because of their caster. With more caster the more the wheel turns, and in this case it turns a lot, the more it will camber positively. You can try this in your own car. Turn the wheel all the way to lock and observe your wheels, they’ll be doing a kachow

What most guys dont get, and i asked a girl that works for Teichmann racing (who race at the nurburgring, spa etc) about it is, that a reasonable amount for camber is about 1-2°, at least for a race car, and still there are idiots who think "WeLl if ThE RaCeRs use 2° aND ThEY ArE FaSt, i will use 30° anD iM EvEn FaSteR". Thats why i hate it personally, it looks like sarcastically large spoiler or those comically large 10" exhaust pipes, only that they are dead serious and proud of it...

@@zackrandles5987Positive camber is indeed used in motorsports. NASCAR: Left wheels only since the cars mostly turn left and are subjected to lateral acceleration to the right. Drift cars: Seen on cars that squat when drifting. The more a car squats, the more positive camber it needs as camber value decreases the further the wheels travel along the suspension's travel. Not needed for cars with a solid rear axle, like a Mustang S197-II and older. Drag cars (rear wheels): Drag cars squat on acceleration. Positive camber is set so that when the car squats when barrelling down the strip, the rear tires have the largest contact patch possible with the strip, maximising grip.
We can all agree, overly positiv camber is just acoustic.
