Why do bonfires cause violence in Northern Ireland?

Northern Ireland just experienced the worst week of violence in a couple of years, as tensions flared during the annual 12th week celebrations. The police attempted to crack down on dangerous bonfires over 200ft tall but we're targeted by masked youths, while in Derry/Londonderry gangs linked to dissident republicans threw petrol bombs at passing cars and attacked protestant estates.

The 12th of July and week surrounding it are a celebration of Protestant culture in Northern Ireland, commemorating the victory of the protestant King William of Orange over the Catholic King James.
While Unionists claim that it is an important cultural event for their community, the nationalist and Catholic population of Northern Ireland believe it is sectarian and triumphalist.
Throughout history the week has been a flashpoint for violence between the two communities and more recently, the attacks have increasingly involved the police forces. It happens every year, but this year is the worst in a while and people are worrying that it might be a sign that the regular and serious violence is returning to Northern Ireland.

A very English view on our historically British problem Main thing is to mis-inform the British public as their governments central role in the conflict here Basically This video omitts way too much even for a most basic understanding Don't kid urselves that this is some kind of Irish civil war Successive British regime's have ensured conflict here long before Protestantism was even thought of This is not a sectarian conflict between two rival Irish factions This is the legacy of British colonialism This video I'm sorry to say leaves out this fundamental point Why? Well. Shouldn't that be obvious my English *friends*

The loyalists started everything, they are the only ones that make those 20 story high bonfires and put the Irish tricolours on the the top of them as a sign of pure disrespect and nobody tries to stop them. While if republicans try to put a union flag on their 20 foot high bonfires the police have to get involved. The number of parades they have is just another sign of disrespect they even march on St Patrick's Day, a day supposed to be spent celebrating St Patrick bringing the Catholic faith to Ireland. But imagine if a republican tried to march on the 12th, they would be attacked and the attackers would be celebrated for it. On Easter Sunday this year there was a republican parade marching in memory of the Easter rising until they were stopped by the police, marchers were harassed, some were arrested and some elderly supporters were shoved to the ground by the police when attempting the arrest. After this I expected to see a police brutality report on the news but instead I found endless reports of Arlene foster describing the police as heroes and the marchers as terrorists supporters. It clear that there is just a complete double standard for the two communities and it's about time that some it started getting addressed.

They look like Towers of Babel. And where do all those pallets come from ? That's a years firewood and I don't remember bonfires that big when I lived in N Ireland ? You'd have to be nuts just to stand up there and build . I went to a protestant school , raised by non religious parents French was our 2nd language '' Why not the Irish language ''? Had a green white and gold pencil snatched out of my hand and confiscated by a TEACHER at school. I was at collage in Belfast when buildings were being blown up daily almost It was said that only the army had access to the particular kind of explosive used to kill and maim and destroy the city My ancestors are buried in Bangor Abbey '' real Bangorian''s '' apparently ? Other peoples race religion/philosophy , colour etc were never reasons to hate anyone. Ireland is magnificent in terms of its natural beauty but the people are heavily brainwashed .In fact can anyone even show me proof that king Billy ever set foot in N Ireland ?

I wish there could be better ways to represent a country, Unfortunately Northern Ireland has opinions on it being a country or not and who it should and shouldn't be governed by. Those raised Nationalist want to identify as Irish and don't see Northern Ireland as an existing country. Those raised Unionists want to identify as British and want Northern Ireland to remain governed by Britain. There are also those who identify as Northern Irish and choose to neglect British and Irish identities. However Nationalists may not see Northern Irish as a Nationality.

This whole report is so far of the mark. What they are saying is more a less true but its just not a true representation of the overwhelming majority in NI. For example 2 bonfires out of over 100 were considered an 'issue' yet this report focuses on those 2 bonfires. As the report mentions there is over 2500 parades in NI every year, maybe 5 areas would be considered an issue or extremely contentious? Again the report doesn't portray the hundreds of thousands of Ulster Protestants who along with their families had the most amazing 12th July celebrations every year. Always portraying negative stories and not the positive ones. I guess those headlines don't catch attention.

The vast majority of Catholics don't mind the orange marches. A high percentage of these marches are to a church for worship. Hard line republicans are happy enough to try & stop them or protest against people going to a place of worship. It's also a known fact that to bolster their numbers in protests & riots against orange marches, republicans will bus in other republicans from 40/50 miles away, just to be offended. It amazes me how people who are deeply offended by anything remotely British can still claim British benefits, spend British money, support British football teams. Hypocrites.

jonny baxter do nationalist or Republicans March though loyalist or Protestant Estates I have been to many of the Orange Order marches and it's shocking to see the police presence at all these matches and I've also been to a lot of Republican nationalist marches where you'll never see the police nor do I see the the abuse of alcohol at Republican parades what's all that about can you tell me please

Richie Rich so what way do you think if it was the other way around and it was the Republicans doin all the marching for 6 months of the year republicans can't even walk though Belfast city centre without you lot start in trouble is come on call a speed a speed ffs

boots Mclaughlin I'm pretty sure the ardyone shops & the diamond in Londonderry are deemed shared spaces. Space for all not just 1 community to claim they own & protest about marches in that area. Alas some people don't want to share, that's why they need to walk 400 yards into said areas to get offended. Orange parades are more religious, republicans parades glorify terrorists. See the difference?

jonny baxter I'm sorry but Derry is a nationalist City the Bands walk through the city centre and bring it to a whole standstill where Traders have to clothes shops and lose business all to facilitate the Orange Order and what you're saying about shared space Republicans can't even walk through the centre of Belfast without trouble and protest from loyalists so you can't compare I have nothing against them marching they can March 52 weeks of the Year if they like in a field anywhere in the north of Ireland as long as they keep away from Catholic areas there would be no trouble at all do you get me

What a non-story. These bonfires are safe and cause no harm. What is more threatening is the cultural beliefs on both sides that prevent Ireland from moving forward
