The Troubles | Northern Ireland | The Orangemen | Marching Season | This Week | 1970
The procession through Belfast passed of Quietly. But one of the largest Orange marches showed the strength of the orange order in Ulster poilitics.
Who are the Orangemen and what do they stand for? ‘This Week’ went to Belfast to follow the celebrations of the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, Bonfires on the Saturday night and church on Sunday and a March on the Monday.

I am going to visit Belfast again after Christmas, it's a beautiful city. As a resident of Wexford, born in Canada from parents of Belfast and my granny was green and grandad was orange, reason they had to leave Belfast in 1960's. Its come along way and I have seen beautiful people from both sides.

I am from Liverpool but I have spent the best part of 20 years in Belfast. I Love the city and it`s people. I have met people from both sides of the divide and I have always found them to be warm and friendly but direct, which is like my own city. One of the last times I was there I went to The Belfast Xmas Market and had a great time. Enjoy your visit my friend.

The orange order existed in England and Scotland. They marched and in Southport, Lancashire catholic churches like St Maries had to clise for the day in the late 1980s
Hold on, Grabbing my megaphone. FREMANTLE!
When talking about modern Ireland one thing that needs to be mentioned was how a Protestant Irish Parliament successfully gained independence for Ireland between 1782 and 1800, during which time Catholics got most of their rights back, with most Irish people of different faiths uniting under the ideologies of either constitutionalism or Republicanism, with both in favour of varying degrees of Irish sovereignty/autonomy and increased personal rights. This independence ended when a failed Republican Revolution in 1798 led British prime minister William Pitt to intimidate and bribe the Irish Parliament into merging the Kingdom Ireland into the UK after an initial Union vote failed. Ireland’s Parliament was forced to merge with The British one (though the courts and civil service of Ireland remained separate, but nominally subject to Westminster from now on). People on both sides seem to have completely forgotten this chapter in Irish history, because Protestants and Catholics fighting together for an independent Irish Kingdom doesn’t fit anyone’s narrative, and yet it had a major impact on the island. Unionism, Republicanism and Constitutionalism all originate from the original Irish volunteers that used the opportunity of the American Revolution distracting Britain to revolt in 1782. This heralded the independence and has shaped all aspects of Irish politics ever since then.

@@Brap-pl2me That's actually pretty spot on. NI Catholic leaders and other reformists in the 1960's explicitly used Martin Luther King and the activism of his Southern Christian Leadership Conference as a model for their own struggle. Unfortunately the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association was met with such murderous violence from the RUC and the Protestant paramilitaries that war became unavoidable.

The last of a bloodly empire.
And to this day each weekend the flights from Belfast to Glasgow are full with either Rangers supporters and their Union flags or else Celtic supporters with their Irish tricolours. Like 50 odd years ago most of the working class people of Ulster continue to go to separate schools, churches and pubs. Depressing and sad in equal measure
How do you know ET was a Protestant? The head on him.
I always find these old clips so tragic. To see how patriotic the Ulster Scots are - contrasted with the rootless English journalists, who are totally devoid of any sense of nationhood or duty. The journalist simply cannot wrap his head around why the children care deeply about their history and culture. Or have a desire to defend it.

Now Catholics outnumber Protestants in Northern Ireland 🇮🇪, and now they are demanding reunification with the Republic. But Ireland has problems similar to England, especially when it comes to affordable housing. So, like England, the Irish are emigrating to other, affordable countries.

Jesus Christ is the only hope for today and ever more John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
