Why did the UK do so badly at Eurovision?

The BBC has gone into crisis mode. Was Olly Alexander's performance not gay enough?

As someone who watched and voted, when I first heard a clip of Olly's song I liked it and thought it could be a contender for the top slots. However, the live performance did the song no favors at all. I found it deeply off-putting. It looked to me like a group tryst in a slimy, dirty gym shower and it was too much for me. I think I am not alone in that. Also Olly's vocals did not seem to come through properly, which also marred the overall impression.

Maybe next year UK’s entry doesn’t have a performance which appears to be gay men in the act of Cottaging . It may appeal to a small number of people but not mainstream. The fact that nil points from real people should tell the BBC most people were turned off.

Thanks for your comment. I agree, the visuals for that performance were not appropriate. I don't think it appealed to anyone. The visuals seem almost as important as the song these days. Maybe it's time to reboot the whole thing and go back to singers and songs and drop the shenanigans.

Olly Alexander has had a successful career with Years and Years with a number of hit records around Europe, so he was a lot higher profile than most of our previous entries. The song was OK musically (the Swedish jury placed it third) but clearly not distinctive enough to get into anyone's top ten in the public vote and the staging may well have put some people off as well.

@@Test_Card_Tom I disagree, it was maybe not the gayness, but it was indeed too much ondulating against each other, more than any woman/man action in any ESC ever. The femboy from switzerland did not hump another man on the stage. But in a way you are not wrong....the show might have been offputting, but if the song was a reall banger, it would have been placed higher. Song was boring and forgettable...thus the combination leads to bad results.

@@endlessstudent3512 Yes that's the trouble with straight people they are okay with anything on television, in films or in public where they are all over each other in a suggestive way but want Gay people to keep their sexual inclinations hidden . As for no such sexual expression between man and woman being on the ESC before; Straight people just don't notice it and view their own behaviour as acceptable. Look at the guest singer who wore a mettalic bikini and strapped to a metal chair and writhing about suggestively with close-up camera shots that couldn't get closer to the action if it tried - not a peep from anyone about her overtly sexual performance.

Personally, I found it quite funny but I just couldn't take it serious compared to many other songs. Like I had the biggest laugh out of every performance with this one but that's it. Georgia for example had a much better song, sang much better and the performance was much much more impressive than what Olly did. If it was about whose was the most ridicoulous or if it was a comedy show, Olly would've probably placed much better.

Personally I haven't watched the Eurovision since the early 80s, but its not uncommon for the UK to do pretty poorly. I put it down to this Europe wide the UK music industry dominates, in terms of artists, sales, tours etc... If you are from Latvia and you are asked to perform at the Eurovision that's likely life changing winning or not, look at ABBA the Swedish music industry isn't known for turning out stars. In the UK being asked to perform at the Eurovision, likely is inconvenient and doesn't really enhance your exposure, thus the UK generally don't get very good artists and success isn't really that valuable to them. As for the Israeli singer and voting, I have friends in the US that don't know a single person that voted for Trump.. even though 74million people did.. My guess is that especially in Israel people got out and voted simply because it was more important to them.

Want some advice? Ok... Try picking a vocalist with actual vocal ability. Try choosing a song that is not so grounded in sex/sexuality. Try planning a performance without an overtly sexual presentation. Try selecting a performer who isn't going to push "sex" (and "gay sex" at that) in our faces. This year was nauseating as a result. In addition, try finding an artist who is not part of the mouth-foaming political activist community. Someone who is musically talented but who doesn't feel they need to use the platform for pushing some (extreme) political opinions, alienating huge swathes of the audience in the process.

My favourites remain France and UK. France for the sheer beauty of his voice and song - but don't know why he suddenly wore a weird see-through outfit - not good. UK for a creative and fun song - and we certainly need some fun in today's dark world - I admit the dance routine wasn't suitable for a family audience. However, I am tired of all the unpleasant things constantly said about Olly on UK media - Madonna has been doing very raunchy dance routines for decades - and at 65 she's still trying to do them and has enjoyed a huge gay following for decades too... and I've never heard her criticised, even when singing live, she sang out of tune. Have watched 2 versions of Olly's song - he has a good voice and it's a great song - each to his own I guess.

Thanks for your comment, Martine. However, I disagree that Madonna isn't criticised. She is CONSTANTLY criticised for what she does --- for the clothes she wears (or almost doesn't wear), for the routines, and for her voice. Elton John famously criticised her "live" singing during her concerts several years ago. And there was her terrible performance at Eurovision in 2019 when her vocals sounded awful due to the autotune not working correctly. For decades she has been told to dress/act/behave/dance more appropriately for someone her age, but she does her own thing, and more power to her for not caring what the critics think. However, the difference between Madonna and Olly Alexander is that this was a one-off performance for a wide range of people. I can imagine that many people would be offended or disgusted by what looked like a gay orgy in a gym shower. If you watch Madonna, you expect something sexy. When you watch Eurovision, it should be appropriate for the whole family. And for a singing competition, his voice should have been much better. You may also remember that several years ago, the Polish entry was criticised for having women churning milk in a very suggestive way --- that was very tame compared to Olly's performance.
