    Farmers who voted for Brexit should get what they voted for. Cheaper food imports! The main reason the EU doesn't have trade deals with countries that are big exporters of food, like America, is that the EU protects its farmers. So all the deals the UK can now do outside the EU are bad for British farmers. What is the point of negotiating a trade deal with Australia if we then tell people not to eat food imported from Australia?

  • @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hy
    @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hyКүн бұрын

    Excellent point. How can you praise a deal while also undermining it? I also think the EU doesn't want American food products is because they're full of antibiotics and chemicals that are banned (that's when the meat isn't chlorinated in the first place).

    oh, the good ol farmer bashing again? farmers voted exactely like the rest of the uk 51%-49% for leave. blaming such a small group, which voted exactely like the rest of the country, is very convenient, i assume. why dont you just blame the immigrants instead? or these bloody nurses, who wanted higher wages? secondly, "farmers" arent a homogeneous group. why would a strawberry farmer in devon care about cheap meat imports from australia?

    pretty the same in most countries, buy local...but how much it cost more? can the locals provite enough food? how is the quality of that food? people are very down to earth when it comes with basic needs and some food u can t buy as locals (weather conditions and so on..).

  • @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hy

    You have a good poitn, although I think there's a difference between buying "local", i.e. food that is grown within a set distance of where you live, and buying "British". His statement was simply "buy British". But there are two problems with that. As you point out, buying British (or lcal) often means it costs more, and many people simply can't afford to do that, even if they wanted to. The other problem is that the UK doesn't produce many of the foods we now rely on. Diets and tastes have changed.

    We import 60% of our food. Delusional Brexit means we have to pay more

    I am quite happy to even pay a little extra, if it means I can reliably "buy British." Its no good everyone moaning about low wages in farming or farming jobs being lost, if we keep buying overseas produce that we can produce ourselves.

  • @Borishal

    Buy British rice, chocolate, raisins, wine, soya beans, spices and herbs. Look at your larder. Look at your medicine cupboard, look at car, you washing machine and all your electronics. Buy only British. Live mediaeval, eat mediaeval.

  • @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hy
    @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hyКүн бұрын

    You're lucky you can afford to pay that little extra. Many people struggle to afford to buy the cheapest, generic, own brand stuff. You're also failing to factor in that the price you pay at a shop is not the price that the farmer gets. Supermarkets are gouging farmers and many of them are going out of business because there's so little profit in it for them. That's not to say that there isn't a profit -- there is, but it goes to the supermarkets. Unless you happen live within easy reach of a farmer's market. And on top of that, because of Brexit, there is a shortage of cheap labour who is coming to pick the fruit and vegetables. It's a huge problem. After the EU expanded in 2004, we had thousands of workers from Eastern Europe who would come over for the summer, work for wages that people in the UK would turn their noses up at, and then go back home at the end of the season with a decent pay packet (for them). Young Brits won't do that, either because they're lazy or because the money isn't good enough. On top of that, we simply cannot produce many of the things we have come to rely on now as our diets and tastes have changed. But thanks for your comment. All comments are welcome.

  • @uweinhamburg

    Nothing wrong with buying local (of national) - good for the local economy and good for the environment! Everything wrong with buying only local, when local is unable to deliver the amount, variety or quality needed!

  • @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hy
    @SMNN-SocialMediaNetworkN-sq6hyКүн бұрын

    Exactly! I'm all for buying local, and generally, I get eggs from a farm that isn't too far away, and the butcher gets his meat locally. Great. Easy. But it's the other stuff. The country's diets and tastes have changed. I don't think anyone's pining for the days of a chunk of boiled meat served with mushy vegetables and a few potatoes. And as another commenter pointed out, many people simply can't afford to pay the premium of buying British. Other countries with better climates can produce a whole host of things in amounts we could only dream of, and they can do it for cheaper, even factoring in transport/import costs.

Georgia for example had a much better song, sang much better and the performance was much much more impressive than what Olly did. If it was about whose was the most ridicoulous or if it was a comedy show, Olly would've probably placed much better.

    He will resign on 5th July after the heaviest Tory defeat in history. He will then pretend to head for his constituency which he narrowly held onto despite it being one of the safest Tory seats in the UK. But in reality he will be doing a deal with an American tech company to leave Britain and work in California. He will be then gone forever from the UK a country he pretends he cares much about.
