    Hi Chief, I am a 2nd officer on the bridge. When we wait for a pilot we don't do circles, we usually drift. If anything we do kicks ahead to maintain position and heading. Also we wouldn't do circles in confined waters with vessels anchored all around. So to me it seems very strange.

    all those ships that are not moving are at anchor evergreen is waiting for the pilot so its already anchors aweigh. most ships anchor's aweigh hours before pilot onboard because preparation of manuevering a ship takes a very long time. when a pilot is delayed you mostly see this ships drifting away from there position and sometimes speed up engine a little bit to avoid collision on other ships

    Hey Chief, Last week the Eemsland Hendrika got into trouble in the North Sea and the captain had to order most of the crew to abandon ship. What startled me was that they did not use the life boat, but instead were picked up one by one via winch from the Coast Guard Helicopter. One of the crew actually went overboard and was picked up with help from a rescue diver. Wind speeds during this event were high and seas were rough. If you ever find yourself lacking a topic to cover, could you address why the crew would at times avoid using the lifeboat. I'm guessing in case of the Eemsland Hendrika that they left the lifeboat for the captain and the few engineers left behind. - BTW ocean going tugs were able to capture and tow the Eemsland Hendrika into port without any lifes lost. They even managed to retrieve cargo that went overboard... Stay safe!

  • @GrantE90

    @GrantE90

    I'm fairly sure most people on lifeboats are recovered by helicopter anyway. If the seas are very rough its probably easier to pick up people from a larger vessel as they're more stable.

    in big ships if they don't have an catastrophic structural damage like being torn to pieces or capsized but has lose power or simple is not longer safe to navigate, is better to stay on board until rescue arrives, obviusly ready to bail as soon that situation changes, once a Tanker lose all power during an storm and both anchors were torn out, the ship was evacuated fully and in the following days as soon the weather improved they found the ship almost 50 miles form the original anchor position, luckly intact except for a big chunk of the bow, but was fully recovered no life loss and the ship sailed a couple of years before being scrapped, and obviusly the reason why they abandoned the ship was because the natural current in that anchorage actully pushes the vessel away from it, and no other vessel was close

Finally, the analyst draws a polygon and asks the patient what thoughts the image gives him, and again the patient says “Sex”. Analyst: “I’m afraid you have a one-track mind. I am a retired veteran Marine Engineer of 40 experience, finally qualifying as Chief Engineer on Steam and Motor vessels. I suspect the anchors were heaved up, and the ship was simply maneuvering all around to pick up the Pilot without wasting any time. The schedules of a vessel this size can be very tight, hence every minute counts. It could be any thing else, but we might never know. Time will tell. IMHO some confusions may arise from the general lack of knowledge on how a large ship diesel engine works. It is far from the generally wellknown car -engine in principle. 1) the propeller is connected directly to the engine by the propeller shaft, NO clutch, NO gearbox, it turns directly with the rpm of the engine. 2) if the propeller has to be halted, the engine MUST stop turning. 3) There is no "starter motor" to crank the engine for starting. Instead compressed air is fed to the engine to start it turning, and then fuel is injected to keep it running. 4) To reverse the propeller, the engine MUST first be halted. Then the valve and injection timing is altered to start the engine again - in reverse direction. Often large vessels have 2 propellers, then an egine to drive each propeller. An auxillary engine drives electric generators to power the steering pods. Several smaller generator sets may be installed distributed over the ship to accomodate power for air compressors, refrigeration, hydralic pumps and cranes. A special compressor keeps the starter reservoir inflated to some 400psi.

    If you truly are interested, it's all satire. Even the pictures used as 'evidence' of the rescued people is in actuality a photo from the Norwegian container ship MS Tampa in 2001 where they rescued 438 asylum seekers from their sinking ferry. None of the articles regarding the trafficking came from or referred to any reliable references. Furthermore, Evergreen, the U.S. Central Command, IMO, Clinton Foundation, and the non-profit, anti-trafficking organisation Polaris denied these accusations. The claims about Evergiven are just old wives' tales, nothing to be taken serious.

    I am remembering something from the “diesel engines” unit of my advanced thermodynamics course in engineering school. Oddly enough, taught by an US Merchant Marine Academy graduate. If I recall correctly, starting or reversing those large marine diesels in an emergency can be a problem if the engine stopped in the wrong position, where the valve gear and other internals aren’t in the right position to start or reverse. So you might have to crank the engine using compressed air to rotate the crankshaft then start. With the fuel consumption of a ship the size of the Ever Given, I could see the Captain making the initial decision he didn’t need engines to maintain station. Based on the sea state, current, tide , wind, etc. And once they realized they were drifting off their assigned station more than they thought they would, they had to start the engine again, and return to their assigned station. And the crazy track was indeed to avoid the other ships to the east, and stay in more open water

    Yes.I watched a documentary on the Jahre Viking or Seaside Giant amongst its other names and going from fore to aft on the engine is not as simple as just flicking a switch.It had to be sequenced as you suggest to line vavle gear and top dead centre of the crank to rotate the opposite way . The reason two stroke marine diesels are used is because they can rotate either way but it takes time to transition between either on these collosal units.

    I like the smirk on your face during your explanation. Terrific video as always, 2 of your videos and I understand the incident better than literally days of "news" coverage.

    The entire incident concerning the Ever Given just keeps on giving. 😂 I know that for some the incident was a nightmare, but for most of us it was just surprising. But things like this image, well, it just shows why the Ever Given was given its name.

    The company Evergreen is Hillary's secret service code name. The ships call sign H3RC (hillary rodham clinton the 3ird?) The ship registered to Panama. "The news comes three years after the so-called Panama Papers were leaked. The information in the leak included upwards of 11.5 million documents with damaging financial information that included attorney-client details of approximately 214,488 offshore entities. An anonymous source leaked the files in 2015 and others were seized at the Mossack-Fonseca law firm that served as a corporate provider for entities dating back as far as the 1970s." www.americanlibertyemail.com/articles/panama-papers-arrests-linked-to-clinton-foundation-and-podesta/

    @@trainman6556 He actually released an entire video about the ship’s name. 😂 The ship’s company is Evergreen. Ever Given is the ship’s name. Ships do not put their names in huge letters on the side of the ship. The name is on both sides of the prow and once across the stern. Lots of people (including me in the very beginning) misunderstood the ship’s name.

    There is a profile face in the drawing as well. No other ships were drawing while waiting; the manurers that beached the ship looked completely intentional.

    @@jeanniebraun1641 true enough... interesting that Billy boy gatz owns the Evergreen state and Raggedy Anne Psaki worked for an Israeli firm called Evergreen... the green new deal is based on keeping the planet Evergreen, purged of humans and cows... just weird coincidences I guess?
