Why Did Obi Wan Let Darth Vader Kill Him? 🤔
Ойын-сауық
Why did Obi Wan Kenobi let Darth Vader strike him down in A New Hope?
And sure he sacrificed himself to let Luke escape with Han and Leia but the real reason is much deeper than that!
See, right before Vader takes the striking blow, we see Obi Wan’s eyes light up with a curious look of inspiration!
This is Kenobi realizing that Luke was ready to carry on without him being there.
But he also realized that he needed Vader to kill him in order to upgrade to the next Jedi level which was becoming a Force Ghost!
And he was prepared for this cuz he was guided and trained by Qui Gon Jinn’s Force spirit so that one day he would be more powerful than he could imagine!
And he also told Vader this right before he died saying, “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine!”
Obi Wan is playing Chess while Vader is playing checkers right here cuz Kenobi knew he could only truly help Luke by ascending to the power of a Force Ghost!

It also freaked him out when he heard obi wan call out to luke " run luke run". This totally freaked him out and made him nervous. He never experienced a force ghost before leaving him scratching his head. I ❤ it

I dont take that as canon. In the original novel of the trilogy this made him totally confused
So basically, he was a pawn who reached the end of the chessboard.
I'm so sorry Alec Guinness hated this movie, because he brought so much into it. There are things that the actor can't possibly have know in SW-IV, that you can, nonetheless, read in his facial expression.
That scene finally makes sense
@stevenfriedman2902

It always made sense since Obi-Wan was talking to him through the force immediately after he died.
He didn't even hit. He swung a split second after Kenobi went "Ima head out"
Obi wan let Vader strike him down because he knew if Vader found out Luke was his son. He would locate him and Luke would prob join him. Beings Ben was the only father figure he had in his life in a short time. Him killing obi wan would cement in Luke he could never join him even if he was Luke’s father.

What a theory. Never thought of it like that
I love how if you look closely at Obi-Wan’s Lightsaber at one point, you can see the stick that is used to help figure out where the blade would be! And before the fight starts, when Obi-Wan says: “Only a master of evil, Darth.” you can hear an odd sound coming from the hilt!
Is over vader i have force ghost Vader : no this again
He also realized/noticed L&L were reunited
I LOVE that character. I love the way Alec Guinness played him, and I admire so very much the amazing work of Ewan McGregor to 1) Create his own version of the character that was still a credible younger version of Guinness' interpretation of the character, and 2) even more admirably the way he bridged the 2 versions of the character with the Kenobi series. Like, I know that there are a lot of imperfections with that series, and I know that people don't necessarily watch Star Wars in order to appreciate good acting skills (Let's be honest, even great actors can't always make amazing results with that kind of dialogues.....and don't get me wrong, I love SW.) but McGregor is just that awesome of an actor. I loved him in most projects he was part of.
Honestly, I’ve always felt he smiled because Luke was there too see the sacrifice knowing that Vader would never turn him after what he would see.
It was many factors including him and his sister being reunited since birth. Just sum it up to perfect timing
The fact not only does his corpse disappear but he does so before the light saber makes contact just to troll bro that hard
Kenobi’s playing chess while Vader’s playing checkers. 🤣🤣🤣
It’s brilliant that Kenobi’s voice is hearse guiding Luke immediately after he’s ascended - and he’s there guiding Luke to blow up the Death Star, and I always thought he helped guide the torpedo.
Actually no, Obi-Wan used the force to ascend into the force. He just timed it so as to confuse Vader and appear his strike caused it. But Vader striking old Obi-Wan, wasn’t required for Obi-Wan to vanish and become a force ghost. He just did it in a way moments before Vader’s saber touched him, and in so doing, trolled.
@drg5352

Yep. The robes were clearly empty and falling; Vader's saber didn't even touch them (or they would have been burned).
He did it because it would be too exhausting to share lightsaber with Luke.
I never understood, and it still makes no sense. He didn't need to die at all. It's just because the actor didn't want to be in any sequels.
I would love to see the obi wan show show his training with his master, that would be awesome
I always thought and still believe in my head Canon that he let Luke watch him die so he could become more powerful, like how the Sith do, but knew Luke wouldn’t fall down that path.
I grinned at Vader because for my whole life I f***ing owned Anakin and Vader WHEN it MATTERED MOST...🤣🤣🤣
This was the only way to set into motion the events that would allow Anakin find redemption. As long as Obi Wan lived, Anakin would be consumed by hatred and the dark side.
The red blade never touched Obi-Wan.
vader can imagine it now hes like a force diety (as anakin ofc but same thing)
I get the feeling that Obi Wan did all of this to set up Vader's redemption arc. You could see Vader becoming more sympathetic and caring to his troops between Episode V and Episode VI
BEING ONE WITH THE FORCE.
You realize that technically he didn’t physically touch him at all the saber hit the robe but he disappeared beforehand (then Buford put it on after finding it on the floor)
How could anyone in 47 years miss that smirk?!
He went super Saiyan
Actually he wanted luke to try killing vader so he made luke angry

@CecilyThanador
4 ай бұрын
This might have been the original intention when the universe hadn't been fully fleshed out yet, but nowadays it doesn't really work as anger is the power of the Dark Side. And Obi-Wan was a Jedi through and through so he wouldn't lead Luke on the path of darkness.
@Eye_Of_Odin978

Resolve =/= Anger He sensed the GOOD in Luke and wanted to cement Luke's *resolve* against the Empire (and the Sith). Kenobi also knew that he had the back-up plan of becoming a Force Ghost. But Kenobi was also aware, like Yoda in ESB (and himself, as a Ghost in the same scene) that Luke was not yet ready to face Vader, let alone Sidious. He would not have wanted Luke to face him in the moment, and knew that Han, Leia, and Chewie wouldn't just leave him behind, so he relied on them to get Luke to safety. The plan came together and worked, in the end.
Obi-wan was so tired of whiny Luke that he killed himself to get away.
The joke would be on Obiwan because in the end Anakin becomes a force ghost as Well without really trying because all along Anakin was always inside vader
This is what the smile meant. He couldn't believe Luke would be right there NEXT TO HIS FATHER! It wasn't fear of not winning the lightsaber duel. He knew he would not survive the mission the moment he got on the Millenium Falcon. But he smiled because he thought, "Oooooooh, wouldn't it be so cool if he went up against his own son." He knew who Luke was to Vader.
Literally just a retcon. Not at all what Kenobi thought. There’s absolutely no indication anywhere that you ever needed to be trained to become a Force Ghost. I mean, FFS QUI GON WAS NOT FULLY TRAINED IN IT.
obi wan was a real blue wielder since he saw the red laser killing his master, anakin would have became the true hero aswell if obi perished during the clone wars since all his negative emotions would all been redirect exclusively on the sith and would have never considered join them
It was already over. Vader had the high ground.
Obi wan will always win the fight against Anakin either if it's a real light saber fight or just a mental fight. That's why he's the master and he is just a god of a Jedi knight overall love him bro.
The real reason is Alec Guinness wanted out of the dumpster franchise. The only reason.
Simple answer: he pretzels become more powerful than he could ever imagine
Okay. Now can we talk about why Obi's body vanished and his robes were completely unscathed?
More powerful, and yet he said he cannot intervene.
It’s tough watching this after watching the fight in revenge of the sith between them
Ah yes. The well-known Jedi power of Retconning…
George’s answer was more along the lines of: « He had nothing to do in the last act so it was better to kill him off » But heh
Obi-Wan ended up really mentally messed up Vader by saying “strike me down and I’ll become more powerful than you can imagine”. Some part of him thought Obi-Wan never died… he wasn’t entirely wrong
Shuda haunted sidious & vader 😂
He saw what Disney was going to do to star wars and wanted no part of ot.
But, Anakin ended up becoming a force ghost anyway. He was chilling with Obi-Wan and Yoda at the end of the Return of the Jedi….
So Force Hippy trained Obi-Wan to do it for the team.
Ethereal became eternal.
Yoda gave Obi Wan instructions on how to commune with Qui Gon from beyond. Qui Gon had reached out to Yoda.

Episode 3 that was mentioned. In the real books and so forth (not Disney) I have no idea.
Because it's really a cybernetic warn and Obi-Wan is an apparition of vaders mind
Roblox Logic : Obi Wan left the game before Vader almost kill him
He owed the mob a lot of money.
If your idea of power is being able to do absolutely nothing except occasionally visit the living just to talk, Obi-Wan succeeded.
He had to level up simple as that
So he could be with Luke without him physically be with Luke because Obi-Wan knew that Vader would not stop looking for him and didnt want Vader to run in to Luke before he was train a bit more.
Or he just needed Luke to truly and personally hate Vader.
im new to star wars so could someone tell me why did obi wan just disappear while qui gon jin died normally?
Could he also be able to use his force ghost abilities to save Anakin?
Real answer is why obi wan kanobi let Vader kill him because he was in love 💞😘 with Darth Vader so they can have a future gay marriage when they both become force ghost after the return of the Jedi
Vader did not kill him dammit. He willingly passed over to the Force - and his smirk was about that Luke got away - and also he does with this Trick, leaving Vader with nothing.
Checkers 😂
Es cape not Ec scape
THEN HE SECRFICED THE OBI WAN
Real Life Answer: George didn’t know what else Kenobi would do in the story. So he got rid of him. That’s what he said.
Where do we ever see that Obi Wan become more powerful than Vader imagined?
real reason, george lucas said his character arc was complete and there was nothing for him to do in empire
He sacrifice himself
I hate the fact that there’s so many people using that garbage Kenobi show for footage.
he did not kill him. it was a force projection of him. hence the suprised " look in vaders face " when he searched his fallen down robe. Why is there no body? its unlogical that he is dead
Of course it had nothing to do with robbing Vader of his earned victory.
Bro literally did nothing as a force ghost
I thought because he would be turned to the dark side if he killed Vader. And what would that prove to Luke?
So...taking out Vadar wouldn't help??
But force ghost isnt alive?? So his technocally dead.
I never really saw it as death. Imo it was more so an ascension as his body is never shown. Vader didn’t kill him, in that moment he simply ascended beyond mortal coil.
Uhmmm, obi wan disappears.
Excape
lol Obi Wan just wanted to be immortal
But Yoda didn't get killed he passed due to age
Watch the old interviews with Spielberg, it’s really not that deep. Killing off Obi-wan lead to the creation of Yoda.
Its also because his goals in life were completed by seeing luke en leia togheter
But how is being a ghost helping Luke more than being alive lol 😂
It’s because he couldn’t win so he took the easy way out also doesn’t make sense Vader becomes a force ghost
Long story short: he sacrificed himself.
❤❤😂😂🎉🎉😢
so by winning the fight, vader actually lost, honestly kinda poetic
So can you only be a force ghost if you are killed in battle?

No, but Kenobi knew that Vader wouldn't just let *him* leave and that endangered the chances of the others escaping. He knew Vader would pursue. So he just accepted his fate, hoping they'd get the plans to the Rebel Alliance.
