Why Did NATO Bomb Yugoslavia? | Flashback with Palki Sharma

Why Did NATO Bomb Yugoslavia? | Flashback with Palki Sharma
Western leaders have called the Ukraine war - the first major European conflict since World War II. But two decades before Russia's invasion, another European country's sovereignty was violated and its cities bombed. It was a ruthless war unleashed by the US-led NATO alliance. Catch the story of NATO's dark chapter on Flashback with Palki Sharma.

As a Serbian who survived 78 days of NATO bombing in its capital, BeIgrade, I can say that made good point with this video, as short as possible. But number of victims is not correct - 800 soldiers and more than 3,500 civilians were killed by NATO. Their targets were not military - they destroyed whole infrastructure of the country - roads, bridges, factories, fuel supply chains, hospitals, even throwing cassette bombs on the green market....the idea was to destroy economy completely and make free entrance for western corporations. Also, they really wanted to kill civilians. For me, NATO is never on the right side.

They keep conflicts like Kosovo, Kashmir alive as it helps them to level out the playing field that is why they have been sending billions of dollars Of aid to our Islamist neighbour Pakistan, they want the same thing they did in Kosovo to happen in Kashmir, it won't India is also diplomacy wise powerful and has shunned all their efforts.

What do you mean by there are things the Western media chose to forget? Everyone learns about the Yugoslav/Serbian/Kosovo wars/interventions/genocides/collapse in school. Its not a big noted chapter like world war 2 or something like that, but its there. There's larger sections on Iraq/Afghanistan. I haven't really been in high school close enough since then, but I'm sure they added a couple small sections on Libya and Syria by now. They also talked about the horrors and massacres in Vietnam a bunch. They talked about the iran-contra and various other insurgency/proxy interventions in central/south america, throughout asia, and little bit about a couple spots in Africa, and of course Afghanistan. So I'm not really sure what you mean by the west or its media choosing to forget about anything that happened? Do you mean or suggest that they bring up that/any of those I mentioned every single time any war/conflict/intervention is mentioned/discussed on the news media/cycle? What do you suggest? Anything?

She then with her family left for Bosnia, from their to novi sad to be bombed again by the NaTo forces. I went their in 93, saw vukovar as my uncle a refugee and police officer who had to flee as his name was on the list to be liquidated. Ironiclaly a young man, a croat told him, you must leave, your name is on the list. He then served in vukovar where i met him. It was like Hiroshima, totally flattened. Every building left standing had bullet , mortar holes. Today i stil feel guilt for not staying and helping my family and fellow countrymen and women. To me nato is the new axis of evil, i think today its apparent to all. Like you sir i hope like the soviet union and its good intentions of Gorbachev, the U.s. also has the courage as the leaders of the societ union to go with a whimper, but for some reason perhaps western history of bloodshed and empire will not go quietly.

After the war, the leading NATO general who lied about the train incident had big business deals in Kosovo following the war. Other American politicians who were prominent lobbyists for Kosovo's independence and pro-war against Serbia were also awarded lucrative business contracts by the newly established Kosovo government. War is all about business for American generals and American corrupted politicians.

OMG... Really? Political leaders used nationalist rhetoric to erode a common Yugoslav identity and fuel fear and mistrust among different ethnic groups. By 1991, the break-up of the country loomed with Slovenia and Croatia blaming Serbia of unjustly dominating Yugoslavia’s government, military and finances. Serbia in turn accused the two republics of separatism. Slovenia - 1991 The first of the six republics to formally leave Yugoslavia was Slovenia, declaring independence on 25 June 1991. This triggered an intervention of the Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) which turned into a brief military conflict, generally referred to as the Ten-Day War. It ended in a victory of the Slovenian forces, with the JNA withdrawing its soldiers and equipment. Croatia - 1991-1995 Croatia declared independence on the same day as Slovenia. But while Slovenia’s withdrawal from the Yugoslav Federation was comparatively bloodless, Croatia’s was not to be. The sizeable ethnic Serb minority in Croatia openly rejected the authority of the newly proclaimed Croatian state citing the right to remain within Yugoslavia. With the help of the JNA and Serbia, Croatian Serbs rebelled, declaring nearly a third of Croatia’s territory under their control to be an independent Serb state. Croats and other non-Serbs were expelled from its territory in a violent campaign of ethnic cleansing. Heavy fighting in the second half of 1991 witnessed the shelling of the ancient city of Dubrovnik, and the siege and destruction of Vukovar by Serb forces. Despite the UN-monitored ceasefire which came into force in early 1992, Croatian authorities were determined to assert authority over their territory, and used its resources to develop and equip its armed forces. In the summer of 1995, the Croatian military undertook two major offensives to regain all but a pocket of its territory known as Eastern Slavonia. In a major exodus, tens of thousands of Serbs fled the Croatian advance to Serb-held areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina and further to Serbia. The war in Croatia effectively ended in the fall of 1995. Croatia eventually re-asserted its authority over the entire territory, with Eastern Slavonia reverting to its rule in January 1998 following a peaceful transition under UN-administration. Bosnia and Herzegovina - 1992-1995 In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the conflict was to be the deadliest of all in the disintegrating Yugoslav Federation. This central Yugoslav republic had a shared government reflecting the mixed ethnic composition with the population made up of about 43 per cent Bosnian Muslims, 33 per cent Bosnian Serbs, 17 per cent Bosnian Croats and some seven percent of other nationalities. The republic’s strategic position made it subject to both Serbia and Croatia attempting to assert dominance over large chunks of its territory. In fact, the leaders of Croatia and Serbia had in 1991 already met in a secret meeting where they agreed to divide up Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving a small enclave for Muslims. In March 1992, in a referendum boycotted by Bosnian Serbs, more than 60 percent of Bosnian citizens voted for independence. Almost immediately, in April 1992, Bosnian Serbs rebelled with the support of the Yugoslav People’s Army and Serbia, declaring the territories under their control to be a Serb republic in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through overwhelming military superiority and a systematic campaign of persecution of non-Serbs, they quickly asserted control over more than 60% of the country. Bosnian Croats soon followed, rejecting the authority of the Bosnian Government and declaring their own republic with the backing of Croatia. The conflict turned into a bloody three-sided fight for territories, with civilians of all ethnicities becoming victims of horrendous crimes. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people were killed and two million people, more than half the population, were forced to flee their homes as a result of the war that raged from April 1992 through to November 1995 when a peace deal was initialled in Dayton. Thousands of Bosnian women were systematically raped. Notorious detention centres for civilians were set up by all conflicting sides: in Prijedor, Omarska, Konjic, Dretelj and other locations. The single worst atrocity of the war occurred in the summer of 1995 when the Bosnian town of Srebrenica, a UN-declared safe area, came under attack by forces lead by the Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladić. During a few days in early July, more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were executed by Serb forces in an act of genocide. The rest of the town’s women and children were driven out. Kosovo - 1998-1999 The next area of conflict was centered on Kosovo, where the ethnic Albanian community there sought independence from Serbia. In 1998 violence flared as the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) came out in open rebellion against Serbian rule, and police and army reinforcements were sent in to crush the insurgents. In their campaign, the Serb forces heavily targeted civilians, shelling villages and forcing Kosovo Albanians to flee. As the attempt at an internationally-brokered deal to end the crisis failed in early 1999 at the Rambouillet peace talks, NATO carried out a 78-day-long campaign of air strikes against targets in Kosovo and Serbia. In response, Serb forces further intensified the persecution of the Kosovo Albanian civilians. Ultimately, Serbian President Slobodan Milošević agreed to withdraw his troops and police from the province. Some 750,000 Albanian refugees came home and about 100,000 Serbs - roughly half the province's Serb population - fled in fear of reprisals. In June 1999, Serbia agreed to international administration of Kosovo with the final status of the province still unresolved. The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia - 2001 The southernmost republic of the Yugoslav Federation, Macedonia, declared independence in the fall of 1991 and enjoyed a peaceful separation. It was later admitted to the UN under the temporary name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, populated by a majority of ethnic Macedonians and a large Albanian minority, remained at peace through the Yugoslav wars of the early 1990s. However, at the beginning of January 2001 the ethnic Albanian National Liberation Army (NLA) militant group clashed with the republic’s security forces with the aim of obtaining autonomy or independence for the Albanian-populated areas in the country. Sporadic armed conflict lasted for several months in 2001, ending with a peace deal which envisaged a political agreement on power-sharing, the disarmament of the Albanian militia and the deployment of a NATO monitoring force.

VUK DRAŠKOVIĆ'S WIFE: 'For years we drag out the defeats, we don't admit that we are criminals, that we killed, demolished and raped' - "We went to Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and finally to Kosovo. And what did we do? Defeated everywhere, we were expelled from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and, of course, from Kosovo. We left bloody criminal traces behind us, which are now being revealed at the Hague Tribunal, at the trials of our political and military commanders. We have been dragging out defeats for twelve years, we do not admit that we are guilty, that we are criminals, aggressors, that we sent the army and criminals to other countries, killed, robbed, burned, demolished, raped", writes Danica Drašković, wife of SPO leader Vuk Drašković. Without too much tact, she said what the vast majority of Serbia does not want to hear.

I really appreciate this video. I was too young to remember the Yugoslav War and as an American I was only told the bad guys were the Serbs and they committed genocide. Later I came to realize as with all wars the situation was much more complicated and Western Media often can't be trusted to report on it fairly. Thanks for this unbiased report. I have a feeling there will be another video like this on Ukraine where we will learn that the Russians weren't the only "bad guys" in this war and that Western Media left out a lot of things when they reported on the war.

Something similar to whats happening in Ukraine right now, except now the Russians are the "bad guys". Nato used depleted uranium bombs which are well documented to cause birth defects and dramatically increase cancer rates. I'm glad that Palki has offered this reminder to those who have forgotten or never knew in the first place about NATO's inexcusable, murderous conduct during the collapse of Yugoslavia. I've mentioned it countless times in conversations about the current insanity that NATO is provoking in Ukraine. Almost invariably, I find that people have no idea about the atrocities in 1999. The UN Security Council never approved NATO's intervention. It was entirely illegal under international law. NATO warplanes carried out a relentless series of indiscriminate terror bombings, slaughtering more civilians than military combatants. The term for that conduct is universally acknowledged as "War Crimes." As late as 1998, both the British government and the US State Department continued to describe the KLA as a "Terrorist Organisation." However, that did not stop the UK, with America's blessing, from providing military training to KLA terrorists at the same time. The shameless hypocrisy of these leading nations in the NATO war machine is truly breathtaking. The NATO commander at this time was the bloodthirsty American general, Wesley Clarke. He had the brazen cheek to run for the Democrat nomination in the presidential campaign of 2004. After he withdrew, he endorsed John Kerry. In 2008 he supported Hillary Clinton until her failure to get nominated. Clark subsequently found that he was all in for Obama and was seriously considered as a potential VP choice for a while. Like Mrs. Clinton, Clark has never seen a war that he didn't fall in love with. It is long past time that NATO was disbanded. At the latest, that should already have happened no later than 1991. The best thing about the current conflict in Ukraine is that Russia has exposed NATO as an incompetent, incoherent, toothless, under-resourced, ineffectual bureaucratic shambles that has only pretended to be a credible military power for the last thirty years while it could bully the military lightweights such as Serbia, Iraq and Libya. Now, through arrogance and a complete lack of self-awareness, NATO has been stupid enough to go up against a genuine heavyweight with results which were entirely predictable for any serious analyst. Russia, holding a royal flush, has called NATO's bluff and NATO isn't even holding a pair of deuces. NATO should have folded long ago but now it's (thankfully) definitely out of the game.

Without too much tact, she said what the vast majority of Serbia does not want to hear.

Why don't you say something against the Russians instead of NATO? You haven't even closely described the situation in the former Yugoslavia. Why was it bombed? Read this, maybe it will make clear why. What happened before the NATO intervention... A member of the Pirot squad cut off the head of a dead Albanian, then boiled it in a pot for days. He extracted three gold teeth from it, and then went home, varnished the skull, and made a table lamp out of it. The body of that Albanian was on a hill above Orahovac, killed in combat. When we returned from that event, as we went on short leaves, he did the same with a killed woman. He cut off her head, boiled it in the same way, took it home, and made a table lamp out of it. He said he wanted to have a pair. Normal people were horrified, we all knew, including the squad commander, company commanders, and about eighty percent of the policemen... KILLING CIVILIANS: I was in Kosovo in August, September, and October 1998. We were sent there without any notice of what was happening, as if we were performing regular duties, just guard service, unaware that fierce battles with the KLA were taking place there. We were completely unprepared, and sent directly into combat. We were first stationed in the cable factory in Suva Reka and from there we went into battle. In the next three months, I saw horrors - children, civilians, both male and female, being killed. Large-scale looting, trucks transporting stolen goods through established channels overnight, and similar. I belonged to the 37th Special Police Unit, commanded by Radoslav Mitrović, and my Fourth company was led by Nenad Stojković. At the beginning, he was a lieutenant, and in less than two months, he was promoted to the rank of major. And in 1999, he became the head of the Police Department in Leskovac. KILLING A CHILD IN A CRADLE: In September 1998, we fought in the villages above Prizren, Res, Ljubičevo, Zagorska Hoča, so-called 'cleansing of the terrain'. I wouldn't mention the name of the policeman, he is still alive, a retiree, he killed a child in a cradle, not older than four months, out of the blue. With the excuse 'Better a dead Albanian than a live one'. Then I wanted to kill him. I realized I hadn't gone to Kosovo with a group of policemen, but with a group I can't define, because they were neither criminals. They were sadists, sick people, almost cannibals, only they didn't eat those people there. CRIMINAL TRANCE: We worked on Glogovac, the Army went ahead of us, shooting at the mountain villages with multiple rocket launchers from early morning, killing everything that could move. Then one of my colleagues demanded money from a civilian over 70 years old. I asked him if he was normal and why he was doing that. He killed the man because he had only ten marks... I couldn't understand that. And that policeman still works. I really don't understand, we ate the same food, drank the same water, they were as if in some trance. I'm talking about those twenty policemen from our company. And their actions were known to the commander Nenad Stojković. He was personally present when policemen from our unit killed a retarded young man and his mother in the village of Bajgora, near the 'Trepča' mine, where we spent the night. I asked why, he told me we don't need witnesses. Overnight, the trucks we used would disappear. They would go looting and bring goods to Leskovac and to the villages where they were stored, at the homes of policemen who were in that group. These were tractors, cars, chainsaws, a lot from the 'Jehu' pump, owned by a wealthy Albanian. 300 new motocultivators, 20 - 30 tons of brandy from the Orahovac distillery were looted... Everything their eyes saw, their hands didn't leave. They even cut fingers when they couldn't remove rings. I saw this with my own eyes, I was appalled."

Born in Yugoslavia but have to say that we didn't have that shut up or die communism. Tensions between nations started after Tito died. And he started the movement of nonaligned for all countries that didn't want or could not join Nato or East block. India was also part of the movement. Yugoslav passport was the most valuable passport in the world, you could travel east and west, north and south.

You should really keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you're talking about... I lived in Yugoslavia at the time of bombing...one thing she's not telling (either she doesn't know or don't want to) is that Milosevic put the anti-aircraft launchers in schools, hospitals and other civilian buildings so NATO would bomb those "civilian targets" so that he can say "Look, NATO is bombing civilian targets" but real evil here is and always was serbian crime-organised government. Did you ask yourself why did all those countries wanted to depart from serbia? ...because all of their money was going into belgrade and then belgrade decided how much would they return. When those countries decided they don't want to give their money to belgrade, serbian government started military actions on most of it's neighbours. NATO bombing also had it's flaws...those deplated uranium bombs were real dirty stuff...BUT the real issue here is that NATO didn't complete it's job. If they intervened (how they should) all together with ground forces, today serbia would be a normal country and not a corrupt criminal organisation lead by the same people that did what they did in the 90s.

Very bised and one sided inacurte video. It does not tell you the real reasons why Nato intervined. Here it is Genocide and ethnic clinsing of the Albanian population living in Kosovo under vucics discriminatory regime whom by the way were not new residents but had been there for centuries prior to Serbs. The name jugosllavia in albanian means sllav of South ( jug = South, sllav = sllavs) which in itself admits that they came there from north. At the end of ww2 Kosovo was split from albania and given to jugosllavia unjustly. The video does not mention the crimes comited by serbia to other republics prior to kosovans turn. NATO AND THE WORLD HAD ENOUGH OF THOSE. Nato did try diplomacy but failed due to miloshevic. She does not mention serbian crimes on inocent people of albania but focuses on Kosovan Liberation Army's "crimes" which was formed for self defense. Her choice of language about the serbian army's activity is "they moved army and tanks" instead of killed and raped expelled a whole population. She only mentions serbian number of victims but not the kosovans on which far more higher then the Serbs over 10 000. Ironicly she chooses to have on the background pictures of albanian kosovan being clinsed. She mentions and criticises Natos mistake of bombing a train presumably with Serbs but chooses not to mention the well documented bombing of a bus full of kosovans too. NATO was defending inocent unprotected people from a brutal regime. NATOs intervention in Kosovo is a proof of a defending organisation. We can argue on why do they not intervine on other conflicts. This video does not represent the truth. She criticises NATO and states the history is written by the winners but she herself choosing to deform the history of Natos intervention in Kosovo. It is well documented. I do feel sad of the inocent people that died on both sides. I do think that leaders should be made to fight first then the inocent people. I do pray and wish that there should be more leaders in the world that are peaceful and do not encourage devisions between nations cultures particularly now that the world has developed and mixed so much with each other. More actions (not words) are needed by leader for nations to live in harmony. This video does the opposite.
