It is Putin making Russians jump at shadows. He is power hungry and wants to leave a legacy for himself as the one who restored Russia to it’s USSR glory days. The problem is the world has moved on and globalised and in order for Putin to strengthen his grip he must unify the people around his agenda. How do all dictators do that? They place the people in fear of a foreign aggressor. In this case, “Nazis in Ukraine harming ethnic Russians in Donbas” and, “NATO wants to invade Russia”. The conflict in Donbas has been agitated by Russia in order to reclaim more “soviet” lands. NATO wouldn’t exist if not for Russia’s aggression and is purely a defensive Pact. But given Putin has eliminated any dissenting voices in Russian media, the average Russian ends up brainwashed by state media.

Nah Western Media is just as big a controlled propoganda spitting machine as any communist nation. Hell it is worse because pretty much every major allied country runs the same onesided stories. I can tell you Australian news is the same. not a single mention of the NATO expansion or the interview with putin where he states that it is literally the reason for the operation.

Thank you so much for this video. I never knew about all this. I'm from the UK so Russia has obviously been painted as the villain in all the media and yes, whilst they are the villains for invading another country, I never really knew or understood the background to this. Why on earth did NATO keep expanding and taking all these unwarranted pre-emptive actions into the east to encircle Russia to the east? And when you mentioned how Russia said they were 'stabbed in the back' after NATO went back on their word - this is literally a repeat of WW2 and a continuation of the Cold War. After all the horrors we know happened within the last century, why do we keep returning to same spot over and over again? Who were we to go back on our word and unnecessarily expand NATO to Russia's borders? Whilst I don't think this justifies the war in Ukraine I do understand Russia's actions more. And, as someone from the UK, I want us to stop sending weapons. If anything, we can send supplies in terms of food and medicine, but we have no place to send weapons. Yes, we're part of NATO but why is it our PM extending the hand of friendship now? This will backfire on us heavily, and though I don't think Russia will attack us since it will most certainly aggravate and lead to WW3, we need to limit our involvement. I'm obviously not Ukrainian or Russian, but we need to have peace - what is the reasoning for war when we all have so many problems and so much more in common than differences? People need to stop interfering in business that doesn't involve them, start upholding treaties and remember their histories in order to maintain peace. I feel sorry for Ukraine for bearing the brunt of this decades long problem which erupted now, and I feel sorry for all the civilians and soldiers risking their lives on both sides. Speaking from UK, we need to focus more on our own problems and send foreign aid not weapons to those in need.

it's unfortunate that in times like these entire nations feel disconnected from their own leaders, and there's virtually nothing that can be done about it. Even if 99% of the country was completely against the war, the politicians in charge would take the opportunity and do something stupid on the world stage instead, just because they are the ones in charge. To them, what's really on the line is their own reputation, the public judging their intellect, perseverance, dignity, pride, etc - it's not his countrymen that are losing their lives on his behalf, no no that's not as important. Ironically you guys in UK sent Ukraine possibly the most harmful weapons of all - depleted uranium shells. Those will be harming the general populous and unborn children for decades to come, on both sides of the war. And if Boris Johnson hadn't flown over to Ukraine and talked Zelensky out of taking Russia's peace deal at the beginning of the conflict, none of this would have happened in the first place. But what can you do, these monkeys in suits just take our taxes and do stupid, abhorrent, immoral things on our behalf, with our own money. What would we ever do without them. I'm one to talk. I live in Canada, and our leader is a fascist

So well said Helvar. Your sentiments & observations echo mine, with the exception that I feel the same as Putin, in the need to punch a hole in what was going to be NATO's last brick in the wall that fenced Russia in. It was, plain & simply, the Cuban missile crisis with the roles reversed. I'm from Chinada, where our beloved 'leader', Mr. Dressup, aka, Turdope, the tin pot DICKtator from Hell, continues to throw our money and materials into the cauldron willy nilly, with the end result being that we, along with the rest of the West are going to get nuked to the point of glowing in the dark for the next century. Concerted prayer to our Heavenly Father is the only thing that will turn the world's fate around.

I am a French citizen and although I believe this invasion should not have happened I often asked questions such as: Why did the international community not take sanctions against the US when they invaded Irak? Nothing also happened when the EU and the US recognized Kosovo that claimed separation from Yugoslavia, yet we treat the Donbass situation differently. Your clear and well written article provides a great point of view to know both sides of the story. Yes there is blame on the west and the US on driving Poutin to where he is now. I am saddened at the Western news media that is more sensational and provides biased information, not true analysis. And it is also saddening to see that the EU and the US do not appear to be in a mood to ind pacific solutions. I believe that it has always been a manipulation to reduce Russia to a poor economic level so that only one superpower remains. It is time for emerging nations to take the lead!

I’m from Russia and I strongly condemn this so called military operation and my heart goes out to people of Ukraine who has suffered in this brutal military actions. BUT: president Zelenski was warned by president Biden about possible invasion but did nothing to prevent it, conversely, he was repeatedly asking NATO to let Ukraine join them as fast as possible, also made a statement about developing nuclear weapons in future, which obviously heated things up. He probably thought Putin was bluffing, but he didn’t. My humble opinion- this invasion could have been prevented if Zelensky tried to negotiate not only with Biden but also with Russian authorities. So that some of responsibility should be accepted by president Zelensky also. Any way - Peace to Ukraine 🇺🇦

The host started by "they say there two sides to every story" -- exactly. The other side the host did not say is: A. George H. Bush may have informally promised during meetings with the head of Soviet Union but none formal agreement or treaty was reached and signed or published, like the one between China and the USA "Shanghai Communique" 1972 or later in 1979. B. Well, China the US agreed and signed document(s) with still in existence Soviet Union is no longer here. Even if there was an OFFICIAL agreement signed and published back then between the US and Soviet Union, it still does not apply to what has been going on since the Soviet Union. the country the US or NATO signed any treat or agreement no longer exit. Ukraine and numerous other former republics of Soviet Union from far east near China and Mongolia to the West of the former Soviet Union are independent countries now. Russia did not replace the Soviet Union. The host makes it like today's Russia is yesterday's Soviet Union. Per that logic, today's China can claim Mongolia and the vast portion of today's far east territory all the way to the Pacific Sea that used to be part of the China's last Dynasty's territory. The conclusion, the host is not only missing the other side of her coin, she is stretching her coin so far that makes no sense except showing how irresponsible or low quality of this India channel is. Focus on why India supposedly a democracy has chosen to stand on the wrong side of history in its recent UN actions. Bother to dig deeper on that issue since you are an India channel and supposedly know more on the why so that we in the west can be educated, but stop embarrassing yourself in trying to educate us in Cold War era history

Maybe you remember some planes hitting into skyscrapers. But the problem with your comment is, that one wrong doing should justify another one. I think they should face war crimes and should be punished - that way, world leaders will know that they aren't above the law and can't make up frivolous reasons to go to war. Then I want to ask you, where was the West & even Ukraine for that matter when the killings for the past 8 years were going on in Donbas? If I were to ask you, you probably have never heard from Putin's mouth/translation of the reasons for "invading" Ukraine except what the media is parroting. The US is aware of the Neo-Nazis in Ukraine and their killings in Donbas but did nothing.

This is the purest form of free, balanced and finally serious journalism. I'm Austrian married to an Ukrainian wife and as such I have the war more or less daily even in my living room. So I'm of course against it. On the other hand it was clearly expectable, that Russia one day will fall crazy over the NATO expansion. Personally I call this passive aggressive expansion without any real need for it, since after the dissolution of the former UdSSR anyway the US have remained as the only superpower. The pity is that Putin, at least at in the early days of his presidentship, has been a historic chance for builing up trust. What's not mentioned in the report, is the fact, that Russia even suggested to become a NATO member and in parallel wanted to become a member of the EU. Both suggestions have been turned down by the West. And although having family relations to Ukraine, I'm sorry to say, that for my point of view, the actual Ukrainian leadership under President Selensky is to blame as well. Their insisting on a NATO membership is like pouring oil into a burning fire. It was a clear call from Russia, that they will never accept this step. Just imagine - we write 2050 and Canada and Mexico form a military agreement with China, inviting China to put some divisions of military forces on american soil. How will the US react to that? The will for sure not accept it, i.e. since the Monroe doctrin is still in force, in which the US clearly declare, that they will never accept foreign military on the American continent. And since this will be a threat to their security I can understand it. Although both, Canada and Mexico, as independent states will have all rightst to act in that direction. With other words, what's legally right, must not always be the right thing to do considering the bigger picture. Probably the best advice to Ukraine might be declaring neutrality and in parallel getting a security guarantee, that if Russia might ever again start a war against them, NATO will defend the Ukraine even despite the fact that they will not be a member. Will such a deal be easy to negotiate and achieve? Certainly not, but with some good will of all involved parties it shall still not be absolute utopic......

It doesn't even make sense to be talking about NATO expanding to the east because in 1990 at the time everything to the east was controlled by the USSR. There wasn't anywhere eastward to expand at the time. Gorbachev himself confirmed that they never talked about NATO expanding in their meetings. @@miltonzhicay9025NATO is not considered a single country, it is an organisation. The policies are aligned with member nations but it has its own rules and these are overseen. No single country holds power over policy as its a collective group, so America, UK, France, Germany or any member nation can't dictate policy to others. Each nation has its own outside foreign policy separate of NATO. NATO members Greece and Turkey have even fought against each other whilst being part of NATO over Cyprus. The meeting notes of these negotiations spoken about in the video for which people are posting comments about are just that, they are meeting notes taken, but if its not in the treaty then it has no basis in international law, and the treaty that led to the dissolution of the USSR doesn't state anywhere about expansion being a criteria. The ukraine treaty where Ukraine gave up its nukes on the basis that if either NATO or Russia attacked Ukraine then the other side would provide support is in this separate treaty. And as NATO rules were always open door, why did Eastern European countries jump at the chance to apply to join. Because they knew what Russian rule was like under the soviet Union, whom their leader Putin wished it had never been dissolved, openly stating he wants to rebuild it, so of course in 1999 more countries applied and were after a period of tike once they met the criteria were able to join. Not every country in Europe is part of nato.

Ukraine has been an ideology battle ground since the fall of USSR, Ukraine is a free country and should be allowed to decide its own fate, the majority of the country have seen what the west has to offer and they want that, proper democratic/ prosperous and safe country. Russia has also tried relentlessly to influence Ukraine all these years but with more aggressive/ corrupt methods now the people have to fight for the freedom because Putin is losing control which was inevitable, his excuses for this war are a joke and I’m surprised more people can’t see through it.

@@icemanA84 that is true however NATO should not have enticed or embraced Ukraine and Georgia. To Putin, that is precisely like Mexico joining a defence pact with Russia, the USA would not accept a hostile Mexico yet Russia is expected to accept a hostile Ukraine? Putin is a brute but he did warn the West about Ukraine joining NATO. Ukraine joining NATO added nothing to NATO except greater risk, it should have remained a neutral state, a buffer zone. That all said, what is happening is terrible and I pray for peace.

@@SimonBrisbane the only problem with your statement is the fact that you said “nato shouldn’t entice or embrace Ukraine” they did not, Ukraine showed interest and they took their request into “consideration” why I say it in quotes is because nato would have never added Ukraine because of Russia, plus Ukraine was in an active conflict within it’s borders (before the war) and the icing on the cake it that in order for you to join nato all members must agree and seeing that members knew that it would start a conflict with Russia they opted to not let Ukraine join. All of that said Ukraine is independent and has every right to choose who it feels secures it’s economy and borders, unfortunately for Russia that is the EU and NATO respectively. Don't be fooled by these fast talking journalists on WION. They confuse and conflate concepts to drive an agenda with their fast talking without debate of any sort. They ignore facts. The example is in this video where they equate NATO with a country like Russia. NATO is not a country but is an agreement that any member country can leave at any time without reprisal form the others. Yet WION treats the two as if they were the same which is just as rediculous as treating a member of a voluntary club as a government organization to which one is bound. . That contrasts with a country like Russia in which there is no agreement of members but just a government which can and does have reprisals for any citizen who disagrees with the government.
