Been so busy man, but I am so glad you're touching on this subject. I got the Presence One kit and it's still sitting in the box. I love your method because it actually explains the reasoning for why build something one way vs. the other. Nice to hear you talking about the speed of that thing because I also wasn't convinced. I cannot wait for things to calm down on my end so I can get back to DIYing. Happy Friday!

I see why they matched it with a PIR after playing with it. After seeing the cheaper sensors didn't need the PIR as they were fast by themselves, I knew the direction I was going.

This pretty much worked out of the box for me (just had to change the I2C pins). I´ve used one AQARA Presence sensor up to now to get rid of all the PIR-sensor shenanigans in automations, but it was quite pricey ($50). Thanks a lot for providing all the information - and especially the working config - needed here and on your homepage! :)

A lot of the interfacing to the Hilink devices is done only via the serial interface. The digital presence signal changes state almost a full second before the serial is updated. They go from pretty good to incredibly good if you use the pin on an interrupt.

Hilink has some very nice tiny AC-DC step-down power supplies that can be used to power the ESP from a celing socket. Size is only 34x15x20 mm called PM01. I use these with the LD2410B (with bluetooth) connected to Homeassistant with a Bluetooth proxy (seperate esp32 in another room)

I do prefer the meanwells of those as the fakes and issues with them kind of tainted the reputation on those PM01 power supplies. It would be great to find a safe power supply that would fit in a box that is 5V 1A out with screw terminals.

For 2.54 vs 2.0 mm that might work, but pin diameters definitely get smaller as the pin pitch decreases, so the female crimp headers will not mate snugly. You could always make up the difference by additionally soldering the joint as long as none of the connections are carrying much current (because of thermal cycling), which in this case, they certainly aren't.

Thanks for sharing your reasoning as I've been using a few different 24ghz MMWave sensors and you've convinced me to give the LD1125H a try as its super affordable and easy to setup! 👍 By the way have you heard of the Unity Sensor by Loopon Tech as it uses an ESP32-C3F board with onboard temp, humidity, light + HLK-LD2410 sensors with plug-n-play integration into ESPHome and no connection issues...?

Atom has similar products with pre installed ESPHome firmware, plug and play, and light sensors, but without temperature and humidity sensors. I believe that integrated temperature and humidity sensors are not accurate inside, especially when the radar module heats up, which can cause significant temperature differences.

So, would a dog or a cat just as easily be detected as a person? I know that you mentioned that a computer fan would. But at least part of it is going to be made of metal and so might be a stronger target than, say, a small cat. Come to think of it, I'm also wondering if you could detect mice/rats with it, perhaps inside/through walls...
