I had been dreading finding a permanent install for my mmWave and humidity sensors. This is both lazy and functional and I love it. I will be doing this!

Travis, Another great video from the Digi Team. Glad you were able to find a suitable, inexpensive, and reliable millimeter (mm) wave sensor, coupled with a true DIY solution (ESP32) for us (the kids who aren't like the rest 😉). Great job to you and OG! 🙂

Maybe the Aqara FP1 fits your needs, if paired with your local Home Assistant Zigbee coordinator.

I'm new to the whole Home Assistant/Home Automation rabbit hole. I'm a developer by trade and have some electronics training, so I'm not afraid of a bit of soldering or code. I came across this video looking for a DIY presence sensor. I love your fun, but straight forward info. I had to subscribe after seeing this video!

The goal here is to do a multi-sensor setup with sensors recommended here for presence, temp/humidity, etc. Do you have a recommendation for a lux sensor? I'd like to setup an automation to automatically turn on the lights in a room based on a combination of factors, including presence and current light levels in the room.

@DeliberateGeek yup! I have used the both the analog and i2c versions. I prefer the i2c for simplicity. I used a TSL2561 several years ago in a project and it worked well so far.

Thanks, Travis. Bought them, they are blasting through doors as a quick test. Will install in toilet ceiling and try to compare the distance 1.5m = in the toilet seat :) start the timer for ventilation activation if sitting more than 2 minutes.

@@digiblurDIY implemented via binary_sensor and filter for realistic distance. Do you have any tips for trying to isolate it from penetrating adjacent room? I've tried 40 degrees tilt, Red Bull tin foil on the side of the sensor, but it still penetrating a bit in the corner. Limiting distance helps a bit, but then actual activation is delayed. Also, tilting too much impacts the occupancy state.

I made one of these and have been using it for about a week now and love it! I no longer have to use my motion sensor in my office and planning to order a few more! Working on a 3D case for it now, probably won't be the prettiest thing, but functional. Thank you for the video tutorial!

Oh btw...I subscribed & like this. I've been an engineer for a few decades now but totally a hands on & DIY guy & LOVE learning about new technology, especially in the digital world since I'm a mechanical/packaging engineer & this is not my strength...yet But have three 3D printers now and working on a haptics design involving mini-controllers, ESP tech, VR & the hardware (body) designing. So really a wide spectrum. The last 6+ yrs I've used the Arduino here & there on some things. This home automation though is on my list of projects after I finish installing a mini-split heat pump at my little house in LA. Got here from Chicago a few years ago & 4 miles from Pacific & u would be surprised how damp & chilly the nights are! Holy cow Anyway these mini sensors and how easy we can design & integrate them into a home monitoring system is unreal. I want to have a bunch of custom 3D printed cases around my place that can monitor temp, humidity, wind speed & direction, sense movement outdoors around me, and if possible the quality of air. ESPHome seems like an excellent choice for this. Couple questions if you would be so kind to answer: :) Can this data collected in ESPHome be put into graphic visual display gauges instead of raw data form? Is this ESPHome the best open source option, for collecting a wide range of data in a local area like your home or office? 1 goal I've always had is having all this sensing data to be not on your phone, but on your wrist. Where a haptic vibration gives you alerts. Wherever I'm at if a delivery is made to my door, the haptic vibration goes off...for example. PLus allowing me a small watch screen 2 view all all the data or gauges. I have my phone w/me going out like everybody else...but not attached 2 my body where I can get silent notices...and very fast access for viewing. Sorry for the long post! My mind races with excitement Cheers

Yes. Once the data is in Home Assistant with Esphome you do whatever you want. Tons of dashboard options etc.

I bought a prebuilt mmWave from Ali, it worked ok but the amount of traffic it was sending (Zigbee) was ridiculous and felt it was likely to cause issues over the long term. It’s the black square box one.

Yep I have that same one and noticed how much data it sends over the little zigbee bandwidth we have.

Would love to see the automations that are used. I am having trouble with them trying to find the pattern of the sensor to trip the lights. Again thanks for a great video.

I am working on a couple tweaks here and there cover some outliers and manual use of the fan. I will cover some of that for people to learn and also find issues I am doing that might not be the easiest solution.

Shining the light up in the hole usually helps take care of all that moisture buildup.

Ohhh, you're "in the ceiling" boxes, combined with "false triggering through the wall" has got me planning a mass deployment inside my attic, looking down in multiple locations, right through the drywall ceiling. No visible sensors at all ...

Hey thanks for this video, really appreciate it, its simple and easy to follow. I was able to setup this sensor in of my bathrooms and it works really well after fiddling around with the settings as per my needs... just a quick question - should I update the firmware of these sensor for which i keep getting ESPHome notifications in HA ? or just skip if the device is working fine presently.

Nothing wrong with doing updates in Esphome.

Have you tried LD2410b sensor? they say it's pretty good and doesn't even need to be connected to the esp, it can be discovered through bluetooth. A comparison between those 2 sensors would be nice!

Yep. I did try it. But like many others found, it falls on its face too often and needed an ESP anyways. Esphome supports it natively too which is cool but you have to hard code the 16 numbers of the various gates of sensitivity. A little much and I found the 1125 to be the perfect middle of the road that worked well.

Hmm.. I don't know. I have only seen the rectangle one in the 1125 model. There's the 1115 that is square but that's a different beast.

Matter of fact, ordered 3. And an ESP32. Just need to set up code for the mmwave + 2x ds18b20 on an 8266 that's already there.

just wondering if the sliders will remember their positions after reboot? I played around with LD2410B with ESP8266 and it has the slider too, but it doesn't remember it's position whenever rebooted.

Yes the settings are remembered. No worries about reboots that I found.

Cool to see another mmWave sensor 👍🏻 Having played with a few mmWave sensors including cheap one and the expensive aqara FP2 myself, the main issue for me is false negatives. How is your experience with that? If you leave it in your bedroom and check the state history, is is accurate enough to avoid false negative (thinking you left while you are still in the room)?

I had some issues with the FP2 as well even without taking cost into consideration. If you keep it out of view of a ceiling fan then no. I haven't had issues with it staying triggered.

Great video. Have always wanted to build something for presence purposes only and prebuilt devices with mmwave are just not cost friendly. Have ordered some of the parts and re evaluating how I'm gonna install it. Any tips on how I can install it without dc 5v supply? Will a power bank or solar work?

It might work if you get enough sunlight at times.

Excellent video! It has truly inspired me! After watching this I ordered all the parts to prototype one out for myself. I've got it setup in my bedroom for now to control a minisplit. I am curious if you have any suggestions on how to prevent detection of ceiling fan motion? Currently I've just physically moved the orientation of the sensor such that it doesn't seem to pick it up. The consequence of that is it limits some detection in areas where I'd want it! Additionally I've noticed it will detect movement on the floor below! Crazy! Was curious any suggestions on avoid that as well? The only thing that I've tried for that is adjusting the distance detection as well as using aluminum foil (which looks bad) to mitigate detection. Both are effective, but same issue as before then detection is limited in areas where I want it to detect. Thanks again!

That is the common problem with many mmwave sensors, moving parts! Its best to just mount it in a way it can't see it or some metal to block it from seeing this fan.

I think athom has a beat on this channel lol. They released an ESP home based MMwave Sensor for $30 with a case, mount and power adaptor. Doesn't look like it has a temp sensor tho.

I ran 18awg doorbell wire I had in the attic from a 5V power supply to my various ESP projects in the ceilings and walls.

New subscriber, this was an awesome video and just what I wanting. Not to metion a guy who likes to build stuff like I do. Love my glue gun or a tube of 3M 5200 for that permanent water tight install. Thanks again!

I have a power wire from the ceiling that is 5VDC via a doorbell wire.

Going to build this one. Have a couple of questions: first off where are you getting power for your device assuming you mount these on the wall but did not see in the video where to power them from. Secondly: I managed to somehow hose the OTA password and attempts to upload a new yaml file fails. I cannot just plug it into my computer as this device is the Athom 115vac plug. Is there a way to reset the device and upload a new yaml or am I sol?

I have a power supply in my attic that I run a wire over to the USB terminal wire I showed. Really just whatever you come up with to get 5V into the USB port will work. I don't use the OTA/API password stuff myself being on a local network as this is the design to lock you out of things if other users are around that could harm the device without the proper password. You would need to connect to it via USB TTL adapter and recover/flash the device.

Very interested to hear your thoughts on this sensor vs the DFRobot mmWave!

Blows it away. The DFRobot is an older sensor, on the expensive side and too slow for lighting automations.

I found it a little too picky and sensitive for my use case. The current native Esphome configuration you have to hard code the values or use your phone with a sketch app to configure them. Slow process especially compared to coming from the 1125 model that has them right in a slider to change instantly. Super easy to tweak and get set how I wanted. Even worked well in the bedroom with a ceiling fan running for person detection there which was surprising.

Awesome video. Can you please explain why you used ESP32 instead of 8266 ?

I have had stability issues with the esp8266 and Esphome lately so I go with esp32 as it makes sense these days with something new.

Are you still sold on the AD410? Or now a year later from your review would you recommend something else. I can wire either or both POE or transformer. I’m looking for great video and 2 way sound. I’m torn between AD410 and Reolink

Yeah. I have both of those. I do prefer the AD410 as the codecs are normal so it works great with Frigate and such. It also uses my bell wiring and rings my real doorbell in the hallway. Tough call. Do you have a reolink NVR already?

That' way cool and probably an economy solution to the Aqara FP2 :) So could this work if the sensor is behind a regular plasterwall?

Yes and yes. I actually had an issue with it going through two layers of sheetrock and insulation so I had to tweak/turn things down.

Using the bme280 and the API, it should handle all that correctly. Is it showing the correct temp?

Loved the video and the walkthrough along with your other one explaining why you chose this sensor that I had to make one myself. However, I wanted to use some Wemos Lolin S3 Mini boards I had and no matter what I change, I cannot get the code to compile per the board: lolin_s3_mini and variant: esp32s3 options. I'm open to any ideas!

I didn't try it. But I wouldn't plan on it either. Bluetooth proxy is doing a lot and this sensor sends updates pretty quickly too. It could impact things and bog it down.

Hi can you also trigger different events based on the distance readout?

You can, I just had too many esp8266 stability issues in the past with esphome. I stick to esp32 now on new builds.

Aren't the "Occupancy Status" and "Occupancy or Movement" interchanged? is that the "Occupancy Status" changes between Occupancy and Movement. Regarding the parameters, is there any information that clearly explains what affects each one?@@digiblurDIY

Would it be possible to program zones in a DIY mm wave sensor connected to an ESP32 and HA? That seems to be an advantage of the commercial Aqara FP2, but it would be much more fun to have it in a DIY...

I have set this up and it is being seen in home assistant but it’s just stating unknown and clearance for the mmWave sensor. I didn’t need the humidity sensor so I haven’t included that, not sure if that’s the issue

Might need to enable the debug stuff and see if you are communicating with the sensor or not.

I now have the sensor dialed in for one of my rooms, but was wondering if there was a printable case that might be around. You wired yours to the faceplate, but I need something different. Will build my own if needed but thought I would ask first.

I used NodeRed on mine as I feed into a flow with my fan, humidity, etc.

What's the difference between the LD2410 and the LD2410c? Seems like you got the LD2410, but that's not the one you linked. The one you linked is the LD2410c and it seems like it just has 4 pins, instead of 2x4 like the one you're using in your video. Is there any difference?

I'm using the LD1125H here, not the 2410, I stuck with the 1125 since it was easier to tweak and get my sensitivity settings done especially with being able to do them in real time.

Great video. I have just received a LD1125H and I'm tinkering with it and the detection speed is crazy! I'm however having problems with the sensitivity. I tried setting everything to lowest values, including max distance, then everything to highest values etc. But I'm still getting detected at 5 meters+. Not sure what could be the problem. Only thing that works fine is the clearance time. I'm using esp32-c3 super mini, but that shoudn't affect it? Thank you for any advice

I have seen a bad power supply cause this with someone recently. Have you tried the cranking the sensitivity to the highest number?

@@digiblurDIY I have tried all values. 2 power supplies 5V 2A over usb. Even having mth1 to 600, mth2 to 300, mth3 to 200 and rmax to 0.4. It still detecs me at range of about 4 meters. I will have it ceiling mounted, so it's not that big of a deal, but I would still like to know what's wrong.

They had noisy power supply issues. I'm not sure of my distance for the ceiling here as I only have the occupancy entities exposed right now.

what about the cheaper (half the price) ld1115h model? is it any good or completely different beast?

Hi Travis, I'm trying to copy this project but not having much success, the Icuupancy status just stays as Clearance the whole time. I used your yaml (but removed the temp/humidity sensor). Any idea what could be going on?

You might need to turn on the debug in yaml for the data coming back from the sensor to make sure it is receiving.

Apparently it helps if you use the right pins! :) I was using the worng headers on the sensor.

In reality, the LD1125H only gives distance, from your experiences is there any other that gives more information (e.g. angle) and works well?

I have this LD1125H sensor perfectly working after following your excellent video guide. I had not installed the BME280 when I did this project and had only installed LD1125H now I need to install a Temperature & Humidity sensor to the same ESP32 to board, can I install a DHT22 sensor in place of BME280 ? I can just replace the below yaml with the BME280 code and will it work ? sensor: - platform: dht pin: D2 temperature: name: "Bathroom Temperature" humidity: name: "Bathroom Humidity" update_interval: 60s

Yes. That D2 is probably wrong. It is usually GPIO pins numbers on esp32 boards

Links all refer to BME280 3.3V with five pins. In the picture there is a BM280 5V with only four pins. I guess the 3.3V version is the right one since ESP32 is using 3.3V but where should the fifth pins be connected to?

They do change them from time to time. The number of pins isn't a thing. You just use 4 of them. Sometimes the 5th might be for changing the address or other features.

My HA is installed in a HP 500 mini PC. I installed the Presence Sensor using your file connected to HA server, everything works but when I removed the power, and installed in a new location, the unit cannot go online!!! I used ESP32 Wrover Dev module and LD2410

Always give new devices a fixed IP in your router. Just use the option to always give the device the same IP as it was assigned in the first place.

What is the energy output of this device? I can't imagine that it is bursting at a watt but just curious what the sustained transmission energy level is. mmWave is non-ionizing so not really concerned with that kind of problem but they can penetrate surfaces so, just curious what the radiation footprint of one of these is. I can imagine the cumulative effect of this is if someone went nuts and had 30 of these things spread around in each room on multiple floors.

I had a segment I recorded with showing a few sensors and why I skipped them or removed them from testing that I'm going to post. It made the video way too long and might have been boring for some, lol. I'll do a standalone of it.

Is the LD1125H better than the LD1115H? I see both of those being talked about.

Yes the 1115 didn't have the various settings to tweak it as needed.

I tried the LD1125H and I get a LOT of false positives. I got a couple LD2410Cs and they seem to be pretty consistent without the false positives. I tried tweaking the LD1125H settings from low to high and in between and nothing seemed to decrease or eliminate the false positives. Anyone else experience a lot of false positives?

Any fans or something else moving? I tried the 2410 when it was all the rage too and found it a little wide for my use cases. Kept catching the next room. Honestly you just need to try several and see what fits your environment. I have ceiling fans in every room so it makes it difficult to find spots to use mmwave.

@@digiblurDIYYeah, there are no fans nor anything. Testing them in our MBR which is downstairs and there is no one downstairs all day. After posting that(of course) I did see a few false positives on the LD2410C but not to the extent of the 1125H. At least you can configure the thresholds for the gates on the 2410C and refine it more.

@@digiblurDIY pins were followed accordingly, but i soldered them instead of dupont,UT = RX2 & UR = TX2 and i didnt use BME280..

You'd need a big battery for mmwave sensors.

I have two of them already. Simple one off of this is simple to throw some glue and be done. If I was making 10 of them. I would probably do a PCB as well.

is it pet proof? rather cat proof?
