yeah this is all that i can think of. Like in the New Testament Peter who denied Jesus three times and doubting Thomas are asked to go out into the world to proclaim the gospel despite what they've done. Peter is chosen to be the rock on which his church will be built. He even chose prostitutes like Mary Magdalene and tax collectors and Saul who prosecuted Christians to follow him. The thing is, did Jacob show as much change in his behavior as them though? And it was definitely a more direct reward from cheating someone. Abraham also kept telling people his wife was his sister and gets a bunch of riches out of her marrying Kings before they find out.

It is important to note that back then, when a blessing was given that it could not be taken back. God allows people to make the decision to trust Him. Rebecca, in a moment of doubt just like Abraham and Sarah before her, chose not to trust God. Instead of trusting that He would keep His promise, she tried to fulfil the promise by human means.

She broke the commandments of the Lord by deceiving her husband, Jacob lied and stole the blessing by deceiving his blind father, and Esau didn’t honour his parents by taken his birthright when the Lord tells you to honour your mother and father. They all broke God’s commandments. When the Lord said Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated I believe God was setting an example here because they all broke his commandments ❤😊

According to the Bible, a whole generation raised on stolen blessings. The craziest and most disturbing part is that poor Esau, who is undeniably the victim here, is made out as the bad guy. He's the one who demonstrates great character by forgiving his brother. Plus the fact that he was cheated out of his rightful inheritance seems to phase no-one. Reason, logic and common sense seem to have absolutely no place or meaning when it comes to something this obvious! The good news is that no matter what type of spin is put on this story the truth will remain the same!

Why would a man, who was an innocent victim of deception and who also chose to forgive the one who deceived him be labelled as bad... His right to his father's blessings were, according to the Bible, stolen from him... I.e. his brothers future generations where "blessed" with stolen blessings. Jacob is manipulative and while he gave his his birthright as the firstborn, if we're being honest, he was young and easily manipulated. After I read this, I put down the Bible for a bit and was just very confused on why Jacob received was blessed.

But gets blessed for it too. That to me sounds very hypercritical of god. On top of the genocide, like I swear they just went from town to town going gives us your land or die (wow they're still doing that 😂). The God of the Bible don't care if you commit theft, murder, genecide or literally seprare families because they weren't full Jews, but as long you worship him those things weren't evil or morally bankrupt yk minor inconveniences. This is the most controversial story in the Bible. Suppose Jacob had not cheated, he would've failed to fulfill his destiny and Jesus would never have been born. This can be applied to our regular situations in this world, where sometimes you know clearly what the will of God is but for some reason you're not just in that perfect will of God for your life. In this circumstance, it takes manipulation of situations, be it politically, socially or professionally to get you in the right place. Otherwise, nothing happens even though God is watching.

On the verge of death he made a rash decision. He pleaded for soup so he wouldn’t die, and Jacob made a deceitful bargain so he could take a blessing that was not rightfully his. He desired the blessing that he knew did not belong to him. That is stealing, this is why God wrestled him at the river bank and asked him his name, so that he would say “Jacob” instead of “Esau” and not lie about his identity like he once did. He lied and pretended to be his brother for the blessing, that is stealing. “Jacob” meant liar, so him saying his name was Jacob had major significance, as God saw his tenacious faith, and forgave him and changed his name.

@khankorpofficial Keep in mind that Esau despised his birth right. But yes, Jacob collaborated with Rebekah in deceiving Isaac to give the blessing to the younger. Yet, Esau’s two wives made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah. Moreover, Issac never utters anything despising over Jacob and Rebekah for the deception. Moreover, the patriarch Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob each had their foibles. Abraham deceived Pharaoh and Abimelech about Sarah being his sister and not his wife. Isaac also lied to Abimelech about Rebekah being his sister and not his wife. The proverbial fruit did not fall far from the tree in the arena of deception for that family. All this underscores the mercies of the Lord, who makes a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Genesis introduces us to God unfolding the plan of redemption, the rescue plan for fallen humanity, but God meets fallen humans where they are at. They were not perfect. We all flawed creatures but we need to come to God who can redeem us and reunite us to Him, so that we can be redeemed and resume that everlasting journey with God that was disrupted by the fall. Fallen never start off in perfection but we are being perfected by God's grace.

Genesis indicates Esau despised his birthright (Gen. 25:29-34). Plus, Esau had Hittite wives whom made life bitter for Isaac and Rebecca (Gen. 26:34-35). One can see how Rebecca and Isaac would have been inclined to have the young Jacob receive the inheritance as opposed to the older Esau. Of course, Genesis is presenting the account warts and wrinkles in the interactions of Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob and Esau. All that is reported is far from all that is being approved by the biblical author and the Spirit superintending the who process. But Bible readers need to pay attention to the nuances between the Genesis accounts of Jacob and Esau, and the declaration of God loving Jacob but hating Esau as spoken by the prophet Malachi and discussed by Paul in Romans 9, which concerns the nations associated with the patriarchs Jacob and Esau. Since Esau told Jacob that he will sell his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of pottage/soup but Esau lied to Jacob about selling his birthright, so Esau didn't officially sell his Birthright to Jacob. That's also explained why Esau wants to kill Jacob for stealing his Blessing. So Jacob did steal his Blessing

The "honoring" wasn't the night of the so-called theft. The honoring was the night Esau sold it and admitted he despised it. That was the night God honored Jacob's reception of the blessing. It is possible that Jacob did not even have to deceive his father to get it, if he had shared with him what happened the night of the rejection, he still could've gotten it honestly. But, instead he heeded to his mother's deceptive practices (clearly a habit of hers for her son's ways) in order to get something that was already his.

"And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and *the elder shall serve the younger"* (KJV, Gen. 25:23). Yah said this before the twins were born. Plus since He is also omniscient He knows all, He is Alpha and Omegs He knows the end from the beginning. He knew Esau woul despise his birthright and the things of God. Jacob's mother, Rebekah with her scheme was just a vehicle to bring anout what was prophecied. People should dyop saying Jacob stole Esau's blessings when Scripture says different. "Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright" (KJV, Heb. 12:16). Not to mention Esau chose not to repent or to Yah's satisfaction. The same as with Cain wanting to give Yah what he wanted instead of what Yah asked him to do. "For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears" (KJV, Heb. 12:17).

Shouldn’t they give the birthright back since we know they know that it was stolen? Shouldn’t we pray for the person who stole until they’ve repented and returned what they stole? I feel like we’re bragging about it. It’s very strange. It makes me question my faith as much as anything. Something feels wrong about this story. My gut tells me there’s more to this that we Christian’s should have the courage to question. Cheating and stealing? Being rewarded for it? Bragging about the cheating and stealing? Idk about you folks, but that’s no very Christian. If it is then I’m not going to call myself a Christian anymore. I’m not too sure that the same forces who run this evil world now didn’t make some of this up. Why wouldn’t they? Either that or the Bible really does contradict itself beyond defense.

@joleaneshmoleane8358 keen observation and piercing questions. Esau’s despising of the birthright and Jacob’s stealing of the birthright with assistance from Rebekah is the “warts and wrinkles” Hank alludes to in his answer. Why does the account of Esau and Jacob =cause to question your faith? Does not God come to us despite our own fallenness? When Jesus bidden us to “Follow Me,” we are far from beacons of moral perfection, right? Do we not all start off as broken people suffering from an incurable case of sin and it is in the following of Jesus that we experience healing and restoration in the image of God that were created?

@HDPersonal777 That would be an oversimplification. Esau and Jacob were both sons of Israel. But Jacob was the heir to promise. Hank’s point is that God’s redemptive plan involved the messianic seed going from Abraham to Isaac then to Jacob the younger and not Esau the older, so the older served the younger. None of this absolves Jacob of any wrongdoing, so the deception. But despite the foibles of sinful humanity, God still accomplishes His plan of redemption, which involves the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

My problem is that we are not supposed to be deceptive and yet Jacob deceived and that’s ok, but don’t you do it! Another problem I have is Abraham, he was laying in his tent naked and prostrate and drunk when Jacob deceived Abraham for the birthright, that meant that Abraham was in this condition enough that Jacob could depend on Abraham’s condition in order to cheat and deceive, but don’t you do it or you’ll be damned to hell according to religious leaders and yet it was ok for Abraham and Jacob! Another thing about Abraham was that while Sarah was barren and unable to give birth it was ok for Abraham to have intercourse with Hagar and she conceived a child and that was ok, But don’t you do it or you will be damned to hell! Same thing with King David, he sent a soldier, one of his officers in his army that he obviously knew, straight to the front lines knowing that he would be killed or maybe he made sure he would be killed so that David could steal the officers good looking wife because obviously David really liked the ladies and already had a few hundred wives, But don’t you do it or you will be Damned to hell! So is there privileged for those that have a “higher” purpose? Seems a little two faced to me! Don’t do as I do, do as I say do! I believe in God, but there are parts of the Bible that are worth following but I don’t agree that because it’s needed to further or complete the plan that it’s ok to lie, deceive, cheat, steal, kill to accomplish the plan, God’s plan or not! I think parts of the Bible are corrupted if you will in the name of honesty, good and truthfulness! I don’t know, I’ve always been taught to take the higher road! I’ve never lied, cheated or stolen to accomplish a supposed truthful plan! No doubt I will get a lot of flack over my comment but really think about it, Was it right for the aforementioned to take place to accomplish the plan?

No your right, there is a lot more going on in the bible that our current “religious beliefs” Christianity included don’t provide any answers for, it’s just always the same responses of oh we don’t know it doesn’t matter. You could ask many questions like for instance the very beginning, ‘god’ curses the man, woman, snake and the SNAKES DESCENDANTS, what who were the snakes descendants? Satan has descendants? The “fallen angels” hadn’t interbreed yet and corrupted all flesh.

The last shall be first and the first shall be last. Also...in raising sheep, if two ewes give birth and the one ewe dies, leaving an orphaned lamb, and the other ewe's lamb dies, the shepherd will remove the fleece from the dead lamb & make s little "suit" of it, and put it on the live lamb. Then they take the live, orphaned lamb, which is now wearing the fleece of the dead lamb, and bring it to the ewe whose lamb died. She then accepts the lamb as her own because she smells her baby. This goes along with the Esau/Jacob story. Isaac was "fooled" into thinking he was blessing Esau because he smelled like Esau. Further, God accepts us because we are covered in Christ's perfume. He is the once-slain lamb that covers us and that God accepts because of Christ's supreme sacrifice..

@@jameshook6675 As much as I disagree with it personally, this seems to be the case. Esau was destined to fail. I don't see any indication as to why, but it was the will of God. Esau did sell his birthright, by coercion I might add, but not his blessing. He was about to die after all.. See the book of Jasher for details. Also, what good does an inheritance do if you're dead and have no progeny? Jacob would just get it anyways since Esau would be dead and Jacob would be left to not only get the inheritance, but also the blessing through legitimate means.. To make al already unideal situation worse, Esau than had his blessing stolen, something he did not consent to. This is how Jacob became God's chosen officially. Esau lost his progenitorship over God's people through deception by Jacob. This is something God is not honor bound to affirm, but God chose to honor this as he willed that Jacob would usurp Esau. I find this troubling to say the least. There are many instances of this in the bible where underhandedness and deception are met with great reward.

That blessing of earthly dominion doesn’t go to the one that is not a follower of the way and who worships another and hates GOD. He sat before Isaac and and when Isaac said “who are you?” Jacob responded “I am Esau, your son”. This is stealing, and it is lying, as the birthright was obtained when Esau was under duress and Jacob wanted to con him out of something that he was envious of. And he is breaking the fifth commandment by not honoring his father, as he broke his fathers wish of giving the blessing to Esau. He faked having body hair and lied about his name. he paid his retribution back when the angel maimed him and changed his name from “Jacob” which meant dishonest or liar, to Israel. The entire lineage up until Christ is of dishonesty and lack of integrity, from king David to Moses, they all fell out of faith with God. There is a reason Jacob had all the hardships at the end of his life, for his unvirtuousness
