Why Did Georgia Tech Football Leave the SEC?

Спорт

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were a charter member of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1933. They were a regional power that won a lot of important regular season and bowl games. But in the 1960's, the Yellow Jackets decided to leave the SEC and become a college football Independent. In this video, I try to take a look at why they decided that and the ramifications of it. Let me know your thoughts down in the comment section!

I am 72 years old and grew up in Atlanta. I agree with most of what you have said about Ga Tech's withdrawal from the SEC. However, I did not hear you mention revenue sharing. I remember that a big part of Ga Tech's decision to leave the SEC was because they did not think they should have to share their Bowl money. I went to O'keefe High School and every day I had to walk past Ga Tech's stadium on my way to and from school and clearly remember reading the banners hanging there saying "It's Our Money".

I went there in '74 (money ran out) Pepper Rodgers era. Caught up on the history and agree somewhat. What's ignored is how small a school Tech has always been and how hard it's been to get in. In '74 many players had to take Calculus - maybe all. The Industrial Management majors had an easier version, but I wonder how many other schools have similar disadvantages. Vanderbilt maybe. And even the pro teams have difficulty competing with the nightlife. The point is valid - long run scholarships were limited anyway. But hindsight is always 20/20.
