I will forever relish the 2015 UGA vs South Carolina game. Spurrier's last game against Georgia before he retired. We hung 52 on him that game, and the grin on my face always returns when I remember it and Spurrier throwing the visor.

This is the video that all UGA fans need to see. My first Georgia game was GA-FL 1997, the only UGA victory of the 90s. Kirby was a senior on that team. My uncle and I attended this game every year through 2019. In the 2000s, I was the ONLY UGA fan who realized UF owned us. No UGA fan understood how serious this game was. Nobody cared. Many did not know it was played in Jacksonville. I gave up in the late 2000s thinking we would ever beat Florida again. I saw the 47-7 losses from Spurrier. I saw all the better Mark Richt UGA teams lose to a worse Florida team in the 2000s. I saw the two undefeated loses which cost UGA a National Championship (2002, 2005). We NEVER left the game early. We suffered through it all. By 2010, my record was 3-11 in Jacksonville... After the '21 locker room speech by Kirby, most Dawg fans laughed. But thanks to my dad and uncle, I knew the history of Spurrier and Georgia. When I heard the '21 locker room speech, I knew Kirby was our Steve Spurrier. I told my wife, "Who would have thought the savior for UGA is a home-grown guy, born a Dawg fan, played for the Dawgs, and suffered the worse loses to Florida along with two NFL Hall of Fame teammates (Hines Ward and Champ Bailey)?" When you listen to Kirby's '21 locker room speech, it was not about winning that game. His speech was the hatred he had for Florida. Most UGA fans did not pick up on this. If you don't beat Florida, you don't get the SEC. If you don't get the SEC, you don't get the National Championship. Kirby has a long memory, and so do I. I have every ticket of those dreadful games framed in my office. I see those tickets and still feel the absolute knife-twisting, heart-wrenching, tear-filled let downs of those Florida losses. Never forget.

UGA fan/alum here. Nice piece but I need to correct you on the flea-flicker play that has been erroneously reported over the years, mainly from the UGA side. SOS did NOT call that play, but rather his backup QB did (Kresser) without his permission. After the TD, SOS chewed him out on the sidelines over it until an assistant gave him a heads up on the 50 points/Sanford thing. Only then did Spurrier calm down, and he told Kresser not to say anything about it and he would handle it. Afterwards, SOS took credit for the call (assuming Kresser would get heat for it) and the rest is history. Kresser, several OL players, James Bates, etc. from the Florida side have told this story many times and laughed at the fact that SOS took credit for something he truly had no part of.

The schedule, currently, helped Georgia a lot with having their harder games towards back end where you can watch teams play and develop gameplan for them. Although the main excuse is that Tennessee just hasn't been good, having Florida, Georgia (historically but not this year) and usually a tough OOC game early made it really hard on Tennessee starting out. Granted, Florida has same disadvantage as Tennessee with early matchup, it just seems like they managed it better as a program. Ridiculous headline. And what a monumental stretch linking Spurrier's DOMINENCE against ga as some kind of motivational tool for smart. Here's the actual facts. Spurrier dominated ga. as coach of the Gators. He then took a back of the pack SEC team in South Carolina and within a couple of years was again dominating ga. Sugar coat it all you want to, Spurrier is ga's Daddy, PERIOD! 😅

Spurrier won one natty in twenty seven seasons as a head coach in an objectively weaker era that lacked parity. Kirby’s won two in his first seven in the midst of the most competitive era of the game’s history. Go turn on your Tim Tebow VHS tapes and relive the glory days bc they’re long gone friend. It’s 2023. I was born in the 80s and hopelessly cheered as we got waxed every year. Times have changed.

That Game in Athens happened the same day the Atlanta Braves won game 6 of the 1995 World Series. I remember clearly being really angry at how that game ended. I was sitting in the Atlanta Stadium watching the warm-ups still seething over how stupid and meaningless that play was. To this day people still make excuses for that crap by saying things like the polls take things like scores into account. All I know is about 2 weeks later a friend who was a Florida alum stopped me in the hallway at work and apologized for that game. That game and the mess that Charley Pell left in Florida was the last straw for him, he stopped all financial support for Florida.
