Why Did Cheese Betray Proposition Joe? | The REAL Reason | The Wire Explained

Фильм және анимация

In The Wire, we follow a number of different gangsters and drug dealers operating in Baltimore, Maryland, like Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell. One of these men is Eastside Proposition Joe, a drug kingpin who’s been in the game for years, building a respectable reputation for himself. A co-founder of the new day co-op, an alliance between rival drug dealers for them to come to non-violent solutions to their differences, Joe is cunning, business-orientated, and he supplies much of Baltimore’s heroin through his connection to the elusive Greeks.
So why did Cheese (Melvin Wagstaff) betray his uncle Prop Joe?

One of the last things Cheese asked joe before he betrayed him was why he never sold the old/outdated house he lived in. Joe told Cheese it was because it once belonged to his father/grandfather, and he was the first black man in Jackson Square to own a house. It had sentimental value and meant a lot to him. He then said it was something that the new generation doesn’t appreciate anymore. When Cheese got arrested soon after I remember the lawyer telling Mario that he sold the house for 1/3rd of his bail money. The bail was $300,000.

While we don’t really know shit about Joe’s sister or the rest of his family (from what I remember, and I don’t even remember anything being said about any other _living_ family in the show), I’d imagine that she holds the same values as Joe and would likely also be on Cheese cheesy, corny ass about raising his kid, and when that ultimately failed (guaranteed to) she or Joe, or both, would likely end up raising Randy themselves… *SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYBODY ELSE*------------------- --------------------------- And then maybe Randy would’ve killed Cheese instead of Slim Charles lol, although I seriously doubt that as he at struck me more as a Wallace/Naymond type dude who’s heart ain’t really in them streets, and damn sure not a killer, which we know Joe would’ve accepted and helped him flourish, probs would’ve put him thru college and shit… Sheeeiiitttt, he might’ve fucked around and ended up clockin that legal grind at Foot Locker with Poot for a hot minute lol. This comment section clearly overlooked the fact D’Angelo told on Wee-Bay. He was also weak and spoiled. From the first episode we see Stringer doesn’t like him for this exact reason and seems rather pleased to tell him he’s being demoted to the Pit as punishment for his actions. He’s also the reason the cops put an eye on Avon’s operation; before then, they’d been able to move under the radar. He was so used to Avon coming to his rescue and cleaning up his messes, when he’s faced with 10-15 and it seems he can’t get out he snitches on Wee-Bay and some others. Remember, Keema never saw Wee-Bay. He was more trouble than he was worth and ultimately his death was one of the more satisfying ones to me. He’s what would’ve happened to Namond eventually.

Cheese was no Chris or Wee-Bay whom were 100% loyal. Marlo was ruthless to anyone he thought did/would betrayed him (Devonne, Little Kevin). So why did Marlo keep Cheese alive when it was obvious he couldnt be trusted.

Here is a great example of the brilliance of The Wire. Joe buys the drugs back at $0.20 on the dollar, yet sells these same stolen drugs back to the co-op for $0.30. However it is very easy to miss this point - you need to have paid attention to both scenes, and in the scene in which he sells the drugs for $0.30, not much attention is given to the price. A lesser show would have really emphasized this discrepancy - they probably would have shown some flashback of Joe buying the drugs at $0.20, then zoomed in on Joe as he announced the price. It would have been dialog like this: "So Joe, how much is it going to cost us to buy back our drugs?" (flashback to Joe buying them at $0.20) Joe (in slow, dramatic fashion as we zoom in on Joe): "$0.30 on the dollar" The show is full of moments like these - watching the show for a 2nd and 3rd time helped me see so many subtle things I missed the first time around.

This is easy because during the series Prop Joe kept looking foolish when it came down to Omar. The final straw had to be when Omar managed to enter the store where Prop Joe and Cheese were and ultimately sold Prop Joe back his own shipment he’d stolen earlier. Cheese wanted to just smoke Omar on the spot but Prop said no, which Omar knew he would say to begin with .This made Prop look super weak to Cheese and he’d had enough. I think up until that point he was out for self but still loyal to his uncle. Reputation is everything in the streets and I can imagine behind the scenes if my uncle kept getting clowned like that in front of everyone how I’d feel. I didn’t feel sorry for Prop because he was peaceful but a snake. He tried to play both ends with Marlo and Omar and got pinched. For the most part I think his entire success was based on trust since nobody had any issues with him for real on all sides until he started feeling like Marlo was trying to take over. He sold Marlo out to Omar and when Marlo found out he started killing Omar’s people with the help of Cheese information. Prop Joes failed tactics is what ultimately sunk the ship and got himself and most of the cast killed off .. domino effect. The Greeks saw the big picture and knew things were getting too loud. They probably thought it was only a matter of time the Feds would be knocking at the door, so why not just let everyone eliminate each other and save them the trouble? They saw Prop had lost control and went with Marlo knowing he to would eventually fall. There are no friends in the drug business and the Greeks proved this. I think in real life the “Greeks” were either Italian or Russian. This was probably used to draw attention away from the real narcos who control Baltimore
