    Let me know in the comments what you think of my solution to the Trap Bar shipping problem and check out all of my HomeGymCon 2023 coverage here: kzread.info/head/PLiIpkR7CltUZIznLlvcP10FWVjJWvaZF8

    Was disappointed to read the email saying the industrial trap bar was going away. I actually own it and love the bar. I experienced the shipping issues when I bought it as well. The first time it was sent to me only the box arrived to the final destination so they had to ship me another one. My concern over the bar going away is that it comes with a lifetime warranty. I emailed Bells of Steele and was assured if on the extremely rare chance I needed to use the warranty I would still be taken care of.

    @@vargasherbert oh wow, that’s good info! That is something that I hadn’t considered until you said it just now. What happens when you have a warranty on a discontinued product? What did you think of my idea of having one bar with the option for the sleeve length you want?

    @@GarageGymLifeMedia I like your idea. The bar is very nice probably would have helped sales if someone had reviewed it on KZread. It is a big upgrade in finish, knurl, and sleeve length over the shorter version which I used to own.

    Thank you! That’s the problem with a lot of products. Unless a company lets us know ahead of time reviewer’s are in the dark about stuff as much as you guys are, unless we happen to see it. Additionally, space is at a premium in my gym, so unless a company sends me something to review at no charge I’m really choosy about what I spend my money on and honestly a bar that big would not have made the cut just because of space considerations.

    Hey thanks for stopping by and for commenting! As much as possible, I like to let companies have a platform to explain to customers why they make some of the decisions they do, especially the more unpopular ones. A lot of time as consumers, and even as reviewers, we don’t take into account the factors that drive decision making by the brands that have a responsibility to the employees as well as their customers. So where possible I like to be a conduit for getting the information out there to help customers make informed decisions.

    Very surprised this was so shortly lived.was a very nice bar and seems like a simple solution to bolt on the sleeves.the shorter version doesnt work on a deadlift platform with it being so short. The plates will be landing on wood instead of rubber . Would like to see a comeback

    As Andrew said it was pretty much a cost issue because shipping companies aren’t especially friendly to equipment manufacturers because of the awkward shape of many products limits how much they can fit into a container or even a truck. Something like a trapbar once boxed up is tough to squeeze in there. I agree bolt on sleeves would be a great potential solution but the demand has to be there to justify the production costs and apparently the demand wasn’t high enough for the original design so I don’t know how motivated they would be to spend the R&D money to develop and safety test then pay to market and distribute a bolt on sleeve version. I love the idea, just don’t know how much of a push there is to make it happen. Thanks for your comment!

    Great video! This also helps explain the trend with bolted on sleeves. You can fit everything in a much smaller box if it doesn’t have to cover the full length.

    Yep! My only concern is of course the the bolts working themselves loose. I had to deal with that daily when I worked at a gym in the late 90s. But it obviously works for people. My suggestion was more to either ship with the sleeves off and then to let the customer assemble the sleeves the way you would after barbell maintenance or let people choose to pay the extra shipping cost for the odd sized box.

    @@GarageGymLifeMedia I like the way the Rep sleeves attach on their open trap bar. The sleeve goes through the frame and it uses carriage bolts and locking nuts. I’d be impressed if those bolts ever got loose on their own. I do like the idea of having the option for disassembled sleeves for a smaller price tag. It’s interesting to me how all these companies with “free” shipping have to design for the logistics and shipping costs almost as much as functionality. As an example, I was impressed with how Bells split up their selectorized lat pull-down to fit in boxes that UPS could deliver from regular truck.

    @@fwiffo42 Good points. We don’t have hard data for the longevity of the REP Open Trap Bar but it seems like a solid design. And when I say longevity, I’m comparing the stuff that’s made now to the stuff that was made in the 1940s that you can still find in people’s backyards in Pennsylvania and at flea markets in the Northeast. Stuff that was made by York Barbell for example, is just as good today as it was back when the lifters in the 40s were using them. That’s my standard: Can I give it to my grandkids one day without fear for their safety? For that matter I’ve had a home gym for over 20 years and a fair number of the items in my garage gym have been with me since at least 2008, because after trying to go with the cheaper options early on, I learned that having stuff break down on you (and sometimes under you) is NOT good. So I’m a lot more choosy now by what I personally use and what I would recommend to someone

    @@GarageGymLifeMedia that’s absolutely true! I’d love to know more about the history of bolt on sleeves and if that’s only really found in new equipment. Either way, it’s fascinating to see what different considerations end up influencing the design of equipment.

    What if they just made the loadable sleeves removable. That way we assemble it when it arrives Ikea style?

  • @GarageGymLifeMedia

    @GarageGymLifeMedia

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Jordan, Andrew mentions that in the video. Basically, BoS isn't sure that enough consumers will want to deal with the hassle of removable sleeves to justify the cost of adding that as an option in the assembly process. If there's enough vocal interest they might but right now, people want convenience over utility in a lot of cases.
