I disagree. What makes a guitarist great is when he/she can find his/her own style and not sound like anyone else. Jimmy Page didn't sound anything like Ritchie Blackmore or didn't sound like Tony Iommi. Nobody sounded like Van Halen until after he did it first. Nobody sounds like me, but life complications prevented me from going forward with a career. I still have my own style. It's all about being different. Most people that I see, even the highly technically trained guitarists, sound like other people. Larry Carlton, as phenomenal as he might be, wouldn't have made it on just Jazz Standards, but what a lot of people don't know about the man is that he is an expert at playing regular Jazz. Watch him with Les Paul. That first number he played blew my mind. Ted Nugent made it big because he has his own style. David sounded original and his playing sounded way more complicated that it actually was, but his style is what shined through. He had his own sound.
His style is amazing. He didn't sound like other people.
@SaintLuminus
Жыл бұрын
No one can sound just like Gilmour. Indeed he has his own unique style going on. Its part of what I love about his playing
@guitarttimman
Жыл бұрын
@@SaintLuminus Yes. Absolutely. But, there's more. He has the ability to play very complicated solos, but he realizes that adding too much actually takes away from the listenableness of the music. I see a lot of players who ruin the music by showing off too much. For example, GG vs Larry Carlton. I like Larry better because many times he plays simple stuff that just happens to be great music, but when he wants to get fancy, he can do that too. I just watched a video of him playing very sophisticated jazz for Les Paul, and then he played a simple, but, great, blues number. That's what do not like about Guthrie. Yeah he's great, but all of his playing sounds the same, and he OVER plays the shit out of everything. It's like yeah Guthrie we all know you are great at complex shit, but can you EVER take a simple idea and make it a hit?
Thanks, but how did he found these very few notes? I love PF since seventies, happy to se they becomes a classic.
@SaintLuminus
3 жыл бұрын
According to an interview with Gilmour he approaches solos in different ways. One way is that he simply improvises while doing a take just to see where it goes. Another way is that he sings something and then tries to play what he just sang. And yet another way is that he tries to work it out using his knowledge of chords, scales and what not.
Гениально! Я хоть в английском не очень, но всё понятно! У гитаристов свой международный язык.

Mmm ok.. I get why people are complaining what makes David Gilmore great.. Compared to yngwie malmsteen or Steve Vai. Ok just stop.. it's all about personal preference.. not yours but mine.. Don't take it personally at all.. But it's just my personal opinion.. Totally understand people defending yngwie malmsteen or Steve Vai.. Totally get it guitar virtuosos.. definitely earned their credits in classic guitar playing.. And here's my point.. it's definitely not based in the blues music.. I can't go into the details on blues music. Or the history on the blues.. or even jazz. Being raised in America.. I couldn't give those music forms credit.. Because it's in-depth in history.. and I couldn't give it legitimately because it's bigger than you think.. Because music is based on jazz blues and classical at the same time.. Musical history or theory I cannot do.. But I'm a fan of Pink Floyd. And David gilmour.. I definitely understand why people defend yngwie malmsteen and Stevie Vai.. Definitely under the Eddie van Halen branch of musical history.. As well as Richie Blackmore as well.. But David Gilmore is based on the blues.. every note counts.. and conveys a feeling.. Either you get it or you don't.. Let me ask you a question.. When you hear the song by Phil Collins in the air tonight. When exactly do you expect those drums kick in? That's how an awesome song kicks in.. I'm not lying or manipulating.. It's either in your DNA or psyche.. but you totally get it.. And when you hear that solo on comfortably numb.. Enough said there it is.. can't be denied.. just listen to that solo.. And every note counts.. and is part of the story of the WALL.. Same thing with the story of the solo of wish you was here.. Every note counts and conveys feeling. And the weird tempo notes on the song money.. I get why people hate Pink Floyd.. The true fan community are complete jackasses. It's so elitist about their stance.. To me being a big fan. But at one time. I really hated Pink Floyd.. Truly a long story that I will not dive into.. To sum it I turned a negative into a positive.. Long story short.. either you get it or you don't.. and you can defend your stance or you don't.. I get it.. but it's like comparing apples to oranges.. I can see how old David gilmer is an awesome guitarist. Then you get angry because I ignored all the other guitars.. And will argue to each other to wear blue in the face.. And nothing solved.. So I don't care.. Either you get it or you don't.. fine.. Let's agree to disagree.

@SaintLuminus
2 жыл бұрын
Dude! There’s a lot of truth to that. Indeed I think a very important part of Floyd’s sound was due to Rick Wright. 👍👍👍🎶❤️
It's all about subtly and nuance guitar playing with David gilmour.. Every note counts.. And don't get me wrong.. RICHARD WRIGHT AND NICK MANSON.. Definitely deserves a lot of respect for Pink Floyd sounds.. And Roger Waters got way ahead of himself.. and way too much ego involved.. And gave the death blow PINK FLOYD.. Even though I'm a fan of Pink Floyd with David gilmour.. He definitely was doing his awesome solos in division Bell and momentary lots of reason.. Dogs of war? Sorrow? Learning to fly? Sometimes the Lyrics was a bit lazy. I mean come on imagine if Roger Waters was there.. But David and Roger became divas of Pink Floyd.. And Richard and Nick payed musicians of Pink Floyd... Sad really.. if they really was firing on all cylinders.. really DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. But really if they weren't.. THE FINAL CUT.. But they never figured this out ever.. And now. Still acting like divas.
So let's be honest. What you're really saying is that it difficult as fuck to play like gilmour. Give up

Well no one can play exactly like Gilmour. What you a a guitar player do instead is learn what he’s doing….and that kind of vibe in your playing. You want to hear his influence in your playing.
