The Greatest Guitar Solo EVER | Pink Floyd
What's the Greatest Guitar Solo EVER? Many people consider it to be David Gilmour's solo in the Pink Floyd song, Comfortably Numb. In order to find out if that's true, we'll be watching a live performance of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb recorded in 1994 in London, England. What makes a good guitar solo? It's not technical mastery or fast technique....these things can help. The real metric of a good solo is if it makes you feel something. Each of David Gilmour's notes in this solo pull on your heart and evoke your emotions. Each string he bends makes me wanna cry. He knows exactly how to reference the chords he's playing over....he's having a real conversation with the rest of the band. Get on David Gilmour's level with my full music theory course below. You'll learn all about the right scales, chords, intervals and keys to use when you solo muhahaha!

I grew up on 80 rock and metal. But most metal guitarists' solos sound like they are practicing their scales with no feeling or melody. Think about it; if after watching a live show and the guitarist's solos sounded like all scales, you wouldn't remember most of the solos! However, enter Pink Floyd's David Gilmore, and Boston's Tom Scholz with their completely melodic solos and harmonies! You remember their solos after the show for sure!

@@pmac2597 nah, that's just an overstated myth, the only album he really played bass when Roger still in PF was only Ummagumma, Animals, and The Wall. And then just some overdub tracks on Meddle (One of These Days) and WYWH (Shine On pt 6). Ummagumma studio was a compilation of each members solo tracks, so it's normal he played bass on his tracks. On Animals, Dogs still played by Waters, the rest is by Gilmour, but he really just playing basslines that already written by Roger on Sheep. The Wall is basically he's more of a musical director than a performer, but he still perform more of the bass parts, just compare the amount of each. Roger still a much better bass player, duh. Gilmour only sounds and looks like a better player only because his ear, while creativity, groove, tempo consistency and synchronization with Nick was Waters' big advantage.
I think Dave Gilmour's greatest solo is possibly also his most overlooked; it's in the song Dogs from the album Animals, right after the line "everything's done under the sun, and you believe at heart everyone's a killer." Powerful stuff, but nobody ever mentions that one.

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION… Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible. The Red Fender Stratocaster he used for this concert in the Guitar Collector World is ....PRICELESS

I think David Gilmore is the perfect blend of technical ability, raw talent, showmanship, and most importantly intuitive feel…..of any guitar player I have heard and/or seen. Probably the best since I still get the same feeling when I hear it today as I did when I was a child.
This song is a great example of modulation for different parts. I love how Pink Floyd always incorporates amazing background singers. I like when David enters in on the pre chorus.
Every time I listen to this, I am never ready for it to be over. I think David could have gone on for at least 30 minutes.
David Gilmour's guitar makes love to my ears.
My list of greatest guitar solos - all David Gilmore: Echoes, Time, Money, Shine on you Crazy Diamond, Murder (from his solo album "About Face"), Comfortably Numb, On the Turning Away, High Hopes. Seems like every time you think Mr. Gilmore has created the greatest guitar solo he comes back with "hold my beer..."

@@gbsailing9436 My favourite Gilmour solo. Yet Another Movie is jaw-dropping as well. In fact, I'm gonna be controversial and say Momentary Lapse is Floyd's best album. BTW Glenn... High Hope is also fantastic.

@@eccehomer8182 Definitely, a controversial point of view there, no doubt. It also opens up a debate about what makes an 'album' great, or one better than another. Is it, the consideration of the songs and what they add to society or culture at the time? Or, the complexity and wholesomeness of their crafting? Or, what the songs bring lyrically to the table? Or, how they combine to form a whole that makes a definitive statement? Or still, something else entirely? Certainly, the answers to the above questions will be subjective for almost everyone.

In Any Tongue is high on my list.
When I was a boy something about this song and solo gave me chills hearing it on my father's vinyl from the Wall album. In 1987 I saw them at Madison Square Garden and stood up on my chair in the nose bleed section and screamed Davaaaaaaave and did my air guitar. That was in 1987 then saw them again in 1988 at Nassau coliseum for the Delicate Sound of Thunder release. In the 1990s I had a chance to see them in New Jersey but didn't go. I regret it now. 😪 when people think of guitar players it's Hendrix or Clapton or Paige, people tend to forget how good Gilmour really is. Who knows what happens if Syd didn't get all messed up with the drugs would we have had Dave in the band. If you listen to early Pink Floyd David plays really good stuff. The Nile song is awesome. All pre dark side stuff is great. Not many people are aware of it because commercial crap radio doesn't play it. I remember as a teenager I was playing some early Pink Floyd and friend of my father did not even know who I was listening to. On my Spotify play list I picked Delicate Sound of Thunder version instead of Pulse. Biased because I saw the show.
I still get goosebumps every time I listen to this after all those years so for me it’s the g.o.a.t. Sorrow is just as good.
I could be doing anything and the moment that solo starts out just takes me into the moment of the music and sends shivers through my body
Once ago, I was talking //arguing// about music with a good friend of mine, and I've been trying to convince him, that the best rock bend in this world of all times is ... Led Zeppelin. He stared at me with crystal eyes and said... yeeaah right ... and what about the Pink Floyd ? I answered him plain and simple ... well, they're not of this world.
Hard to say... there's a lot of Dave Gilmour solos that can be considered the greatest solo ever. He's not fast or shreddy, but who needs that when he can make you feel every single note.
Yes, you are absolutely right. I also always thought that Comfortable numb solo was the most amazing I've ever heard. It elevates your mind to a state of unimaginable fullness. I've admired Pink Floyd since 1970.
David gilmore is one of my favorite guitar players ever. This song is pink Floyd's best song. This performance is euphoria.
For me, the studio version is the best, but the Pulse is a great live version of it. The reason it is so amazing is that the solo perfectly reflects the words and meaning of the song. Some people think the solo to Stairway to Heaven is the greatest, but it is a solo musically related to the song, but not necessarily related to any meaning therein. You listen to the 'Stairway' solo and you like it musically, you listen to the Comfortably Numb solo and tears come to your eyes, your heart clenches and you are fixated. It is not necessary to play 800 notes per measure to solo, it is only necessary to play exactly the right notes at exactly the right time.
"Sorrow" is the most epic Floyd's solo
For me It is! Best guitar solo doesn't need to be the fastest or technically perfect or using the most chords, is about the feeling, and this solo gives me that!
It’s definitely one of my favorite solos, and my nemesis, it’s incredibly difficult to recreate not only his playing but that tone and the guy sings too… what! I’m happy I found friends that appreciate the same things I do 🤟
The solo in Comfortably Numb is definitely the best part of that song, however I think Gilmour's best solos are the ones on Money and Time. I wasn't expecting a video about the best solo to be from David Gilmour though in terms of popularity I thought Van Halen's Eruption was considered the best by a majority of people. Back in the 90s Guitar World Magazine did a 100 best guitar solos of all time issue and the number one spot went to Jimmy Page for Stairway to Heaven - and while still a great song I don't think that deserved to be number one.

Having STH as the best solo is just showing what kind of people are voting for it. Good, but nowhere near. And Eruption is just a wankfest! Eddie did way, way better than that... D.O.A., Fools, I'll Wait... Christ... even Beat It is better. I also agree with Shlomi BD... Sorrow is probably Gilmour's best solo, though High Hopes, Yet Another Movie and On An Island are also up there with the other more obvious ones.
It’s the only solo that has made me cry multiple times
Goosebumps! Shine on you Crazy Diamond is also amazing. Saw them in 1994. Best show I ever seen. David Guilmour is "the Master" ❤
His solo on Sorrow from the Pulse Concert is amazing too.
It is the greatest, I was at that concert and it blew me away. Mind you Floyd has been doing that since 1965…. What a great life…..

WOW!!!! Wish I could've been there !!!!!! LOL
Even before watching your video I believed this was the greatest Solo. It builds, has space, breathes, reaches, and it is emotionally powerful. Thanks for the breakdown.
This and the solo from Time are perfection
To me the best Gilmour solos are in Time, Dogs, & Have a Cigar (in no particular order). Comfortably Numb is easily up there too.
Pink Floyd is the reason I love Dream Theater. Petrucci's Solos often remind me of my all time favorite PF. Breaking all Illusions, Octavarium, Best of Times - all really good Solos 🙏🏻

Petrucci and Gilmore both play with more feel than any other guitarist out there I’ll put lifeson in that category as well
I att6ended this tour when it hit B.C. Place in Vancouver, British, Columbia, Canada in 1994. I was 7th row stage right, so very close to David. Most awesome show I'd ever seen from PF, and that was my 9th, starting in 1975 with the Wish You Were Here tour.
"you can tell he is hitting the right notes at the right time" Thank you for bringing that to my attention

Live version of Veteran of the Psychic Wars is my favorite BOC solo, truly epic! Still can't approach this, tho, Gilmore is just such a deeply committed consummate master of the Strat and it's ability to transport one to the heavens emotionally
Pulse version of that solo was definitely, the best version and best solo of all time
Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
i've been listening to bands since the 70s and following (floyd) for a good many years. (comfortably numb) in my book HAS to be the greatest (guitar solo) ever. david gilmour is without doubt (a genius). he releases so much feeling from his guitaring which really effects MY emotions, especially (comfortably numb).
Wow. That really helped me appreciate how masterful that solo is 🙂
On The Turning Away live solo is other worldly, and High Hopes studio solo is also incredible. Dogs and Shine On You Crazy Diamond solos are epic on their own.

I like the Pulse version of High Hopes better. But good call.
Even better hearing it live. A group of us from school went to see them, it was so good we bought tickets for another concert on the way out. We ended up seeing it three times.
the Solo on dogs is david Gilmour's greatest moment. this is up there though
For me, without any doubt, Comfortably Numb's two guitar solos are the greatest.
If there would be a Rapture, this would be it. Saw this live and it was like an out of the body experience. The best. Period.
David Gilmour is one of the classiest guitarists you will ever come across. He’s not a narcissistic egomaniac that some of the more talented musicians become over time. He does so much for those in need yet stays in the background, out of the spotlight. He is a true gentleman in every aspect of the word.
For me this is the greatest guitar solo of all time. I get chills everytime i listen to it or play it. No one plays as emotionally nor improvises as good as Gilmour does. My fav guitarist.
