Why Dave Eggers Refuses to List His New Book on Amazon | Amanpour and Company

It's been a troubling week for Facebook -- a week of events that raise questions about social responsibility in the age of social media and big tech. One who has written extensively about the perils of corporate power is award-winning and bestselling author Dave Eggers. He has just released a gripping sequel to his bestseller "The Circle." "The Every" imagines an Amazon-Facebook type company that becomes the richest and most dangerous monopoly ever known. Here is Eggers, talking with our Walter Isaacson.

I get the convenience of an ebook, etc. that all of you below are talking about. But I LOVE getting a new book at the bookstore (the red balloon is one), and I love the atmosphere of picking out that new book in a real bookstore. Best of all? Turning an actual page, the smell of newsprint, etc. I do not get the same satisfaction from digital books. It almost seems like you lose the connection to the author when you read a book on a device vs. turning an actual page.

It's hard to break the pattern, due to habit, comfort zone and lack of education. The basis for me is to know what you really need versus what you want and then choose your vendor accordingly. Break monopoly by answering the question: what's difficult and inconvenient? What will you be loosing truly?

Go and try to get a local small bookstore to carry your work. Every slot is calculated for max quick profit and unless you've got much else going for you, you won't get in---or they'll take your book that cost you for ex. $10 to produce, but give you only $3 if they sell it. So there's no point in showing up at 99% of these places anyway.

@@demetriusmiddleton1246 Actually, I did not mean it that way. And later on I realized that the Amazon result seemed to appear only in the ads preceding the actual search results. (I had narrowed the results to "Shopping.") It also looked as if some of the copies listed were second-hand. Leaving aside the questions of if and how these things are possible or allowable, any secondhand dealer could list the book on Amazon, I would think; I don't see how that could be legally prevented. Which may be part of what Mr Eggers referred to as the difficulty of preventing his book from being sold on Amazon.

Whatever makes literature more affordable is good for America. Expensive literature is out of reach of specific segments of America because for one, they don't have it in their budget to buy it, and two, they don't even know it exists, because they don't even look, because they know ahead of time they can't afford to buy it. I am sorry for the artists who are deprived of profiting more fully from their works, but we HAVE to push good literature to the masses.

Dave Eggers sounds as though he got stuck in a past era when people still bought paper books. I have been buying all my books as eBooks since 2011 ... either from Amazon for Kindle or from Apple. It is easier to read because you can choose the typeface, font size, background colour, lighting ... it doesn't require that trees be cut down (paper). Also the eBook is weightless, can be carried on any small digital device that you carry in your pocket ... along with thousands of other eBooks, all weightless, an entire library in your pocket. I used to work in a bookstore and in 2012 business had fallen to the point where most shelves were replaced with other 'gift' items, while the book shelves shrank. Does this guy not realize that if a person like myself, age 64, no longer buys paper books, then there's little hope that young people who have grown up in a digital world, with all their data in their back pocket ... would ever consider going to some independent bookstore to buy a paper book ... that would not only add extra weight to their backpack (if they carry one) ... but would also add unwanted clutter to any tiny, postage stamp sized apartment that they might still be able to afford ... or clutter to their tiny room in their parents' basement. :-)

I can see that it might be convenient to load up 100 mystery novels to read while travelling on vacation, but I find an e-book to be a poor thing in comparison to a real book. The books I read are mostly ones that are of continuing interest to me, to which I will want to add notes and markings, which I will want to refer back to, to recommend to others. A book on a shelf can remind you of its existence in a simple way, while scrolling through a miniaturized list of thousands of titles .. is just undoable. And I don't have patience with learning how to annotate in yet another application's methods. I first learned that type of thing 40 or 50 years ago, and I'm out of patience with applications. Anyone who knows how to write knows how to annotate a printed book, and that printed book and its annotations will exist and be readable long after that application has been left in the dust by the new newest replacements. Well, I know that many people see it the way you do, and I'm not trying to convince you to adopt my opinions. Each to his own taste.

@@heidis3993 ... Not only can you highlight any words, sentence or paragraph in transparent "highlighter pen" of any colour you choose, by simply touching the words wth your finger ... but you can also annotate anything, also by simply touching the screen where you want the note to appear. These highlights and notes are then searchable, by simply touching the Menu bar, you can instantly find any note or highlighted text without having to flip through pages. In addition, to address your comment regarding paper books on a shelf reminding you of their existence, eBooks are kept on a 'virtual shelf' that shows each book cover picture with title, author, etc. sitting side-by-side on a virtual 'wooden' shelf or any shelf of your choice, which is made to look exactly like a real bookshelf. Also, by simply touching any word or phrase, a dictionary pops up on the screen ... or access to online thesaurus, encyclopedia, Wikipedia, etc. You can also translate any word or phrase by simply touching and holding your finger on a word, phrase, sentence or paragraph. Many of the great old books are now available for free in the public domain ... books that used to weigh a ton, like Tolstoy's War and Peace in eBook or PDF form are as light as a feather, or how books like Ulysses by James Joyce ... or I'm currently reading Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (a book I once borrowed from a Library, but it was so huge and heavy so not suitable for my long bus rides to and from work, hence never got past the first few chapters -- so I'm reading it now as an eBook, freely available in the public domain). In addition, with a few touches of the screen, you can change the typeface and font size, can even change margin width and line spacing!! You can choose a soothing background colour, like a muted sepia or gray that is much easier on aging eyesight. Now when I pick up a paper book, I find myself wanting to adjust the margins or line spacing, or find the meaning of a word, or translate a phrase ... and to do so while on a bus would mean also hauling out a phone or iPad ... and then trying to hold open the unwieldy book while simultaneously navigating a digital device to open the dictionary or translate App ... super inconvenient and impractical ... better to have them both on the one device and have the dictionary and translate available at a simple touch of the finger on the page.
