Why Confess My Sins to a Priest?

Ойын-сауық

If you’ve ever been in a conversation where you had to defend the Catholic Faith, people have probably asked you this question. It can be a tough one to answer, but Fr. Mike lays out many reasons why confessing our sins to a priest makes perfect sense. Confession isn’t a man-made tradition of the Church but rather a valuable gift given by God and rooted in Scripture.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

Carlos Rodriguez, PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY AS IF YOUR ETERNAL “LIFE” DEPENDED ON IT In the Book of Hebrews Chapter 10 in context the author was talking to “baptized” Christians (Hebrews 10:22) telling them to not be “neglecting to meet together” in “the Church” - being the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. Why “the Church”??? ***Hebrews **10:26**-29 “For IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY after receiving knowledge of the truth, THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT, AND A FURY OF FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES………..HOW MUCH MORE PUNISHMENT DO YOU THINK WILL BE DESERVED BY THE MAN WHO HAS SPURNED THE SON OF GOD, AND PROFANED THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT BY WHICH HE HAS SANCTIFIED, AND OUTRAGED THE SPIRIT OF GRACE”.*** What does Sacred Scriptures clearly say “IF WE SIN DELIBERATELY” or willfully break any of the commandments whether the old (10 Commandments) or NEW (Laws of LOVE or refusing to LOVE as Christ commands per John 13:34)??? If “THERE NO LONGER REMAINS A SACRIFICE FOR SINS, BUT A FEARFUL PROSPECT OF JUDGMENT”, then how does one obtain reconciliation with GOD again??? We must examine the old covenant to fully understand the NEW COVENANT. In Leviticus 5:5-6 and Numbers 5:5-9 we can understand what an old covenant Jew had to do to receive GOD's forgiveness. Additionally, GOD in the Books of Leviticus and Numbers any time personal “sin” is mentioned you will read over and over again “THUS THE PRIEST SHALL MAKE ATONEMENT FOR A MAN’S SINS AND IT WILL BE FORGIVEN” (Lev 4:20, 4:26, 4:31,4:35, 5:6, 5:10, 5:13, 5:16, 5:18, 6:7, 7:7, 12:8, 14:18, 14:19, 14:20, 14:29, 14:31, 15:15, 15:30, 16:32, 16:33, 19:22 Num. 6:11,15:25, and 15:28). In the old covenant, GOD uses ordained “men”, the Leviticus Priesthood, to administer His forgiveness. Now, does GOD keep His WORD and covenant promises??? GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood per His covenant in Numbers 25:12-13 and Malachi 2:4-7 and has WORDS of “forever” in Exodus 29:7-9, 40:15, and 1 Chronicles 23:13. Then, GOD promises to have a perpetual priesthood in Jeremiah 33:14-22 NEW COVENANT PROPHECY. Additionally, in context of “gathering the nations” in Isaiah 66:18 GOD states in Isaiah 66:21 “some of them also I will take for priests” meaning no longer based on Levi tribal lineage in the NEW COVENANT. In John Chapter 13, we see Jesus Christ fulfilling His Father’s Levi Covenant promise and Malachi 3:3 prophecy, when He sits down in the upper room “purifying” the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD with a “washing”. This “washing” was a “forever” priestly liturgical GOD command in Exodus 30:21 in order to perform any altar work or sacrifice. What “same” power does the Son of GOD give to His ONE and ONLY established Church or “the Church” per Matthew 16:19, 18:18 and specifically explained to the NEW COVENANT PRIESTHOOD by Jesus in John 20:21-23??? In 2 Corinthians 5:18-20 St. Paul describes what Jesus Christ did was He “GAVE US THE MINISTRY OF RECONCILIATION” and concluded “SO WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST”. An “ambassador” wields what kind of power as an “official representative” of Christ or more specifically explained in “the Church” as “persona Christi”??? Please come to your real home and be “reconciled” to “the Church” HIS ONE BODY (Ephesians 4:4-6). What did Jesus Christ create, pray for in John 17:21-23 and die for??? If you really LOVE Jesus Christ, then you will respond to His prayer and join the “ONENESS” that He created. The “Lamb of GOD” wants to unite with you in the NEW COVENANT PASSOVER (Luke 22:19) in His ONE and ONLY established Church, so we all can be “perfectly ONE”. May GOD richly bless you on your journey.

Greg Aitchison Certain aspects of the Catholic Church rub me the wrong way. For instance, I understand the rationale behind the papacy being given to Peter (Fr. Mike made a great video, if I'm not mistaken), but I think the idea itself is a misinterpretation of text taken beyond its intention. And it actually goes against most biblical teachings being against a centralized theological authority other than God. The theocratic state of Israelites wanted a king and God told them it was a bad idea and they got Saul. A third of Thomas Paine's Common Sense is dedicated to this idea that God disliked placing figures of authority in a position that might seem to replace Him. And for much of Catholic history, the Pope has acted much more as a king than as a prophet or priest. I have other issues like the patron saints replacing the patron Roman gods, but all in all, I think Catholics are Christians just as much as I am. We just disagree on the specifics. And I often respect their dedication and unity more than that of most protestants. Who knows, maybe someday I'll be convinced.

Carlos Rodriguez I’ll certainly agree with you that there have been many, many people in the 2000 year history of the Church, who did not live up to the demands of their office. Still, do not let their sins be what holds you back from the Christ, who is Truly Present in the Eucharist.

I greatly appreciate this sacrament (of Mercy) and feel it is the greatest gift to us after the Eucharist. When I’m in sin, i cannot wait to get to reconciliation and know that my sins are forgiven through the ministry of the church. As one born and raised in the Catholic church, this very issue has always been a thorn in my side and ONE reason I chose to exercise my faith in a different church. This was the best explanation I have ever heard for confessing my sins to a priest. Honestly, it's the first time I've heard a priest admit that going to God first is a good idea, and that it isn't the priest himself who "grants" me forgiveness but God through him. I'm not sure I'll ever fully return to the Catholic church but I do appreciate the clarification I got from this video. Fr Mike, I wish I was closer to your location, I believe we could discuss and break a lot of barriers today's Christians have against the Catholic church.

Jesus is my High Priest! I’ve got resurrection power living on the inside and so does anyone who accepts Christ. I confess to Father God and not a man. I am Spirit led and He is my moral compass. I am in daily prayer with the Lord. Jesus tore the veil: “Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10:19-20‬ ‭NIV‬‬ In baptism it is a public declaration of being in Christ! It’s like a wedding band in a way, being in covenant with the Lord. Blessings to you all!! God is good all the time! 💜 You are loved!!

What I like about going to confession is that after confessing my sins and hearing the priest says you are forgiven in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I feel so light and relief and peace in my soul, that's the power of the Holy Spirit. That's how I know that the sacrament of confession is valid even with a priest.

I used to be a Catholic and I know the feeling you talked about. But that good feeling only lasted a few days right?! And then you'd sin again and feel guilty and the cycle repeat. I was once there. It's actually a religious spirit/demon in you that gives you that light/good feeling. Come out of the Catholic Church. When you find the true God Jesus Christ he'll set you free from your sins you'll be free indeed not trapped in a cycle.

Thanks for sharing Travis. I converted to the Catholic Church last year while in college from a Protestant background, and I was mortified to make my first confession. In the end, the Church is a hospital for sinners and not a museum for saints. The priest is supposed to act in the person of Christ in the confessional, which means showing you Christ's tender compassion, infinite love, and inexhaustible mercy ‒ the priest should not shame you for your sins but should rejoice with you for coming to the Sacrament of Reconciliation because sin separates us from Christ. Also, I've been told by a couple of priests that after they are done listening to confessions, they spend time praying for the grace of divine amnesia to forget the things they have heard. One last thing is that according to the laws of the Church, priests can't tell anyone about your sins you tell them in confession or they would be excommunicated (kicked out of the church permanently) ‒ even if you told them in confession that you murdered somebody. www.catholicstand.com/get-fear-confession/

Thiefels (the priest who heard my 1st Confession some 45 years ago) telling us that God knew we were physical creatures and so he used physical acts to dispense His divine grace. In other words, all of the sacraments have a physical component to them because we can relate to physical things. So the act of "saying" our sins is God's way of playing to our strength ... He's leveraging our physical nature, in a sense.

Angela Stewart Angela, I was away from the Catholic Church for quite sometime. Finally I came back but couldn't go to Communion. I went to Confession but no matter what I did...I couldn't get it in my mind that I was good enough to take Communion. I stayed away from taking Communion for 8 yrs...then I finally ... well Idk...something happened...???...& I took Communion. I've never strayed that far & that long from Communion again. And if I ever stop I know it would be ANOTHER 8 yrs. I'm not sure I'd ever come back from that. I'm NOT a "cradle catholic" so no matter how much I LOVE Confession I am always somewhat anxious/nervous or down right PANICKED to go to Confession...but without confession I just can't take Communion unrightfully so. You just gotta go & know that everything will work out. Keep going...and know that no priest is right for everyone...(sorry Fr. Mike!! LOL)...we all have different emotions & personalities of our own. If one priest makes u feel bad or judged...uncomfy...try another priest. You'll find the one who is right for you! God bless u sweetheart. Everything will be ok...just keep on keeping on. JESUS LOVES YOU! Jessie .

What stars really look like It is right to confess your sins and repent to God. But can you please bring up a chapter and verse where Jesus spoke about this?

What stars really look like Catholics are not Antichrists let’s see who are the Antichrists in 1John 2, 18-19 18 Children, it is the last hour;* and just as you heard that the antichrist was coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. Thus we know this is the last hour.nnumber 19 THEY WENT OUT FROM US, but they were not really of our number;* if they had been, they would have remained with us. Their desertion shows that none of them was of our number.

What stars really look like read (John 20, 21-23) (2 Corinthians 5, 18-20) The first Christians confessed (James 5, 16) (acts 19, 18) Priests, being men like us, can understand us and help us to advance in the way of our own sanctification. (Hebrews 5 1-2) On the other hand, the idea of confessing directly with God is not biblical. In the Old Testament it is said that the confession of sins is made in the presence of a priest, in a cultic and liturgical context (Lv 5, 1-13, Nm 5, 5-10). He who in any of these ways has become guilty, will confess his guilt and present to the Lord, as a reparation for the sin committed, a female of the flock, sheep or goat, in sacrifice of expiation. The priest will thus make you atone for your sin, and you will be forgiven. (Lv 5, 5-6)
