Why Coke Studio “Bharat” is a Musical Disappointment | An Opinion

Ойын-сауық

Here's my take on the ongoing scenario about Coke studio Bharat, a much anticipated project of Coke Studio in India, which seems to be a disappointment for musicians & music lovers so far.

We desperately need the old Coke studio stars like Papon who is excellent in mixing different genre of music, Clinton Cerejo a mastermind rock artist, Anupam Roy a magnificent composer, Hitesh Sonik a magician of instrumentation. These poeple can give us masterpieces like Tokari, Madari, Saathi Salaam, Husna, Baisara beera, Moner Manush etc.

Problem with 'modern Indian singers' and music is that they AVOID originality big time and always find someons's style to replicate. Coz in order to be 'original' it takes alot of effort. Those efforts include respective language accent, rythem associated with that language and not trying to be a wannabee. I remeber old Indian singers from SOUTH like Udit Narayan, Lata, Alka Yagnik, S.P bal etc took years to perfect their Urdu before delivering the most ever green songs that are still appealing to new generations. Same goes for Punjabi singers in India..that original Punjabi accent and descipline is missing. Reason for Pakistan's singers appeal is that most are original and free of any systematic strings like an industry or formula. When they sing in Urdu...entire world listens coz of the originality and clearity...when they sing in Punjabi the singer looks and feels organic..when they sing in Saraiki...the singer is a legend from the same region.. Languages sound pure with less complimenting noise. Modern Indian singers have a hybrid Hindi/Urdu/English accent with a very loud annoying pitch..this messes up the appeal of songs. They should work hard like old Indian legends over respective languages before opening their mouths..mostly are there for the $$ than the passion... When u are passionate...money and fame comes towards u.

A small correction: udit, lata and alka ji are not from the south rather three different corners of the country. Problem in India is the music industry have been dominated by few labels and they set the narrative, they sidelined the old greats and came up with their quacks who're not so great singers, consequentially what happened is that the original music production is not happening much on the bigger national level, it is happening independently but not done by the bigger record levels. India has humongous musical talent, the classical disciplines are in huge diversity from time immemorial. like all our hindu scriptures are written in the form of poetry and are meant to be sung and chanted. India has huge musical diversity, there are more than 50 folk music traditions in India, there are hundreds of tribal musical traditions and there is a huge diversity of classical musical traditions in India. All the classical masters are there in India as well but nobody to support them , they are living on subsistence level. Musical industry overlords only favours their own brethren and sideline others, that's why we see the likes of half baked singers like neha kakkar and jubin nautiyal. There's a sharp decline in the musical quality from 90s and early 2000s, now there are very few songs worth listening amongst a huge stockpile of absolute rubbish.

The current season of Coke Studio Bharat is such a shame. Coke Studio India (MTV) used to be so good. We have such amazing tracks coming out of it. But this season...i don't even know what to say. Please do listen to Coke Studio Bangla that is being done in Bangladesh. They are doing such a great job! There are 2 seasons so far. Season 1 was nice but season 2 is just out of this world. Do give it an ear. ❤

extremely apt ma'am, haven't been able to pin point the problem but your explanation made it so clear. I also feel the Indian coke studio doesn't treat the classical element with as much sensitivity as they do in Pakistan, we don't use classical music as much as we can to our benefit and the composition becomes a half ass indie song almost rather than a coke studio arrangement.

Major reasons is that poetry, and proper lyrics is missing in our songs. As,seen more radicalism even in music. What I seen in Pak coke studio is that they have better lyrics and poetry which helps them in creation music and harmony.

When I started to watch and listen to Coke Studio bharat, I liked the song Taqdeer but I was thinking, this song could be made any day in India without coke studio label, what's the point of Coke Studio Bharat then? Probably I don't have much sense of music technicalities but i felt something is missing and here you explained everything 👏 You are doing a wonderful job for Music. Keep it and best wishes from Karachi 🇵🇰

Songs from Coke Studio Pakistan are much better than ours , one thing that Pak is better is preserving their cultural folks . We in India are forgetting our culture . Whenever I want to hear some coke studio I usually go with the Pak one. Initailly Coke India had some people who really gave some of the best but then they started remixing nonsense songs with classicals and folk song.

You know why Pakistani music is good? Because most of the Pakistani musicians have strong Family backgrounds in music, so this results very high standards in specially classical music, they can't just release any Random song and call it a day. For example "Kaavish" son of Nayyara Noor, a 16 years old boy took 6 years making an album called "Gunkali". After 20 years we are still listening to it today, there are numerous examples like that "Noori" band etc. The bar for musicians is very high here in Pakistan. India has Fucking 350+ languages and cultural diversity is just insanely big and musicians are outstanding imagine what coke studio India should have done by now if it was on a right track.

Aadaab. So good to see you. Very thought-provoking video. Let me tell you, a few days ago I also listened to the same track of Indian coke studio that you talked about in this video. I was so disappointed that I commented under the track, it looked fake, very fake. Alas, even the smiles of female artists were looking fake. Why? I have an opinion, that why those smiles were looking fake but that's not the topic. Now coming back to the real issue, I think the western part of India has lost its identity. Please don’t mind. I love Indian talent. But that is going in vain. No proper utilization of the talent. Because Indian artistic think tanks have deliberately left their real Indian roots. As a result, it is not only Indian music that has declined, bollywood is also suffering. Modern Indian Producers do not show India through its cultural richness. They show India through the lens of Western English Countries. That’s why they don't appeal. P.S. I noticed your Urdu aptitude, "Taaleem". 🙂👍

Hi Ananya, I saw your first video when you compared CS Pak with CS India earlier. I also commented then that the failure of Pak Film Industry resulted in Creative Music in Pakistan without any big time industry to follow. But on the other hand we in Pakistan grew up listening to Rafi Sahab, Kishore da, Lata Ji and Asha Ji and we enjoyed musical hits produced by One of the finest music directors in India... So when we visualize CS Bharat, we visualize it in very high standards... But I feel CS Bharat is hastily producing just by mixing various genres in a hoch poch manner. Probably it is because that CS Bangla has also come up in a very big way and somehow they feel threatened and in a haste are doing mistakes

Coke studio has been doing this for sometime, except season 2 which was really good. The problem with Coke Studo India is we try to make a Thali of the music where as Coke studio Pakistan focuses a lot more on vocals in the mix. The Prabh Deep song that featured the rajasthani singer were singing absolutely off-key as I have heard the original singer in his village.

Well chosen subject. I used to love coke studio india until season 4. I still listen to those songs today. After that, the show just disintegrated. I think the reason for this is two-fold. The show producers became too greedy, chosing to mass produce small chunks of anything they could get a hold of, and just play it frequently. Second, today's tiktok generation has no patience for art and talent. Today's coke studio india is a shame. Sad. Miss the good old days when music was art and talent.

In my point of view... India has great classical and folk musicians. But they have a serious lack of quality rock musicians. Without quality rock musicians... You can't make proper FUSION. This is where pakistan and bangladesh is far far ahead from india. finally, you need highly skilled sound engineer to get a top- notch mixing. And without a flowerished rock music scenario, you can't get that level of sound engineering/ mixing/ post production. Creating fusion music is not like creating film- music. Its very much different. But indian music industry/ technicians are very much used to the filmy style of music, which won't help you here. And yes, hip-hop artist/ rappers can't contribute much unless you have a good bunch of MUSICIANS... who can play instruments and compose/ arrange a complete song.

Coke Studio is not the benchmark of good music. In India no one gives a shit to Coke Studio as music is dictated by the Music companies, Bollywood and Channels. As a whole they produce lots of blockbuster songs with International awards, nominations and even Oscars. Coke Studio India will become huge if it gives the same lime light what Bollywood music does to an artist.

The problem is in leadership in India I think. There is no knowledge or priority for music but rather commercial angle and gimmicky stuff. Nobody wants to go the extra mile and do authentic, thought out music - but Bollywood version of folk music bana ke bechna hai. May be if they got someone who is classically trained but younger musician to direct/manage the show it would produce such brilliant tracks.

6:07 : My opinion - That song you heard is absolutely brilliant in terms of musicality. Just listen to the rhythm and bass section. Absolutely perfect. It is not necessary for a song to be always about the composition. Sometimes, the accompaniment can outshine the vocals, and that's also equally musical. Tajdar Junaid, the composer is primarily an instrumentalist, and an internationally acclaimed one. As for the song Taqdeer, the dissonance is on point. For reference, listen to the classic Abbey Road song I want you, by the Beatles, or for that matter, Sultans of Swing by Dire Strait. As for the post production, especially mix-master, yes, its poorly done. No defense for that.

In my opinion the only reason is that the impact of bollywood type music and the compositions of the bollywood songs huge which also reflects in Indian POP Music........How Ever In Pakistan, the non-filmi music was took its place in pakistani society. I am not saying that LOLLYWOOD SONGS were not upto the mark but filmi and non-filmi songs from decades were playing side by side. FROM LATE 80s OR EARLY 90s, The Pakistan non-filmi specially POP MUSIC industry remarkably on the skies......... I remember JUNAID JAMSHED, ALI HAIDER, STRINGS AND SO MANY BANDS HAVE CREATED AN ENVIRONMENT WHICH PUSHED PAKISTANI MUSIC INDUSTRY ON ITS PEAK

The only problem with Coke Studio Bharat is it evidently seems highly influenced by Pakistani Coke studio style or manner, which coke studio Bharat is lacking understanding of. Jab tak coke studio bharat kuch apna nya nai kre ga, isi tra ka fazool mal hi aata rahay ga. Pakistani Coke Studio k level ka 50% b kr lo to bri bat ho gi.

You are saying that Coke Studio India is influenced by Coke Studio Pakistan that's why they aren't performing up to the mark. You should check out Coke Studio Bangla. Coke Studio Bangla is also influenced by the style of Coke Studio Pakistan. But they're doing immensely great job. I mean Hats off to Coke Studio Bangla. You should listen to their songs. Although I didn't understand the Bengali Language. But it is a saying good music connects your heart. That's what music of Coke Studio Bangla is doing.

I think there are some good songs in Coke Studio Bharat! But for some reason indian audience did not take that. Amit Trivedy, Anupam Roy, Papon and some others made good songs here and there, for me AR Rahman disappointed big time at coke studio

  • @S-S793

The biggest problem I see is a lack of a coherent musical vision and melody (let alone harmony), and some weird obsession with "fusion" with very clunky results. They should have no more than 2 artists per song, make it a single, cohesive song without trying to throw in rap, classical, folk all the time every time. If it is Carnatic influenced, let that be the dominant sound. If it is Rajasthani folk, let that prevail. This season looks like the corporates at Coke have created a "brief" that the musicians are trying to follow. Need a visionary produced like Amit Trivedi, Clinton Cerejo, or A R Rahman (or even Arijit Singh) in charge of the season.

Yes, what you suggested was actually successful in previous seasons. Chaudhary was one such masterpiece. Aao balma was another. Although they did experiments with the instruments but didn’t mix multiple genres/styles and it worked beautifully.

The way they butchered Taqdeer with messy production really pisses me off. Specially the childish and corny tune at "ghuroor hovay". This song is good, but could have been a masterpiece and an absolute banger. If one compares Coke studio Pakistan and India, one can easily see the difference in music production. In CS Pakistan, despite more musical instruments (Guitar, Sitar, violin, flut and drums) playing simultaneously one can easily distinctly hear and focus on each individual instrument. While in Indian Coke studio, neither the music is clear, nor are the instruments identifiable. I guess this a the curse of Bollywood music label , which attracts professionals with big money, but control and suppress their talent.
