Decades from now, we'll see if this thesis is correct or not. In the meantime however, Russia is engaged in a simmering war with Ukraine in the Donbas region, located in eastern Ukraine. This war has been the most violent seen in Europe in the 21st century and has been going on for well over 7 years now, with historical causes that go back even further. I created a 26 minute long documentary explaining the entire course of the conflict and it's available to watch right now exclusively on Nebula at this link: bit.ly/3fs3n0D If that sounds like something you'd be interested in watching, go ahead and check it out and sign up for the CuriosityStream/Nebula bundle deal which is running a massive 41% discount through the end of May, which is only $11.79 for an entire year of both CS and Nebula with access to 3 exclusive RLL documentaries so far. Here's the link for that deal, and thanks: curiositystream.com/?coupon=reallifelore

I live in Russian Karelia. Say what you want, but climate change does affect us. When I was a kid 25 years ago, I had to wear three layers of clothes during winter. It was so bad that on a winter day you'd see about 50 people on the streets in a city with 250k population. Nowadays I wear same light clothes during autumn, spring and winter. It's still freezing, especially in February, but it's not even remotely close to how it used to be.

None of these places are huge as Russia, which is already a millitary superpower, and has a strong economy. 80% of Russia's land is frozen and global warming would make them probably most powerful country in recent history. Canada has a lot of islands which will be hard to take resource from, scandanavia is full of mountains, Alaska won't make USA powerful again because their mainland will be on fire, southern south America will be on fire too because it isn't too cold there and it will take a lot of time to take resources from antartica

Yup. King for a day. There's more to climate change than average temperatures. It screws with all the weather systems too, who knows what the hell happens to Russia short term, but long term, well consider the sea level rise, which will be ongoing, so where you building your ports for distribution of all this? How much of the Arctic coast gets inundated? What about the Siberian methane being released from the permafrost, that is a rapid global warming accelerator. Does the Taiga continue to function as it has under such extreme circumstances? And all the developed economies in ruin, so who exactly buys these materials from Russia? Climate change has no winner, this is a daft documentary.

I've been saying this for a few years already. As a Canadian, I understand that some 70+% of the people live BELOW the 49th parallel. There's gonna be a LOT more climate friendly land when the Earth heats up. Sure, all those lush green forests will die from pine beetles and dry forest fires, but it would have a much warmer future. They also have a ton of resources up north too.

The best region for climate stability in the world is the Great Lakes system between US and CA. It's the largest fresh water system in the world and the largest region of arable land in the world. The US and CA also have sufficient energy to remain independent should it come to that. It's the Europeans and Asians who will have it the worst. Let's hope Russia finds a way to be an economic partner once again.

But our growing season is rather short with a long, icy season. Even in the Rogue Valley itself, our agriculture and general socio-economy could use a longer warm season. So could most of the USA. Global warming is an all around win, a mutual benefit win-win situation. But we have to subdue these strange adverse weather events, which are not related to the overall climate. I couldn't disagree more. Climate change will cause so much havoc on the environment, so much disarray on global economy that the concept of "superpower" will cease to exist. Even if massive swaths of land in Canada and Russia become more usable with warming trends, the rest of the planet will be in such a mess, there will be no economy left to sustain anything that resembles a superpower. Indeed, those areas of Siberia will prosper, but the disastrous consequences of global warming will overshadow any economic gain.

One significant hole in this theory: the climate types that far north can be entirely novel. This mostly has to do with the solar radiation of these latitudes. At these high latitudes, the absolute temperature range will increase to be similar to the current temperate zones, but then it becomes a matter of timing. Since the latitude is higher than current temperate zones, the sun is weaker, meaning the energy received at such high latitudes will have different timing characteristics to those farther south. It's the reason why despite Britain and southeast Australia having the same climate type under the Köppen-Geiger classification scheme, the climate of Victoria is far hotter in absolute highest temperatures: it lies at a lower latitude. There can be some completely unaccounted for climate types if this metric is used as the defining characteristic of a climate.
